There is no single RAM total that fits every Proxmox VE host using ZFS. Plan separately for the host, concurrently running guests, and ZFS: Proxmox’s guide sets a 2 GB minimum for the host OS and services, gives about 1 GB per TB of used storage as broad ZFS guidance, and offers a separate ARC rule of thumb. These are planning estimates, not amounts to add mechanically; actual needs depend on guest workloads, storage use, and whether deduplication is enabled.
How to estimate RAM for a Proxmox ZFS host
Start with the memory your guests need, then make sure the host and storage have room as well. Proxmox’s administration guide specifies at least 2 GB for the OS and Proxmox VE services, with designated memory for guests in addition. That 2 GB is a minimum for those host components—not a recommended total for the machine. See the Proxmox VE Administration Guide, section 2.1.2.

- Reserve the host baseline: Set aside at least 2 GB for the OS and Proxmox VE services. Treat this as a floor, not a full allowance for every host process.
- Add guest allocations: Total the RAM assigned to the VMs and containers you expect to run at the same time. Guest memory is in addition to the host minimum.
- Allow for ZFS: Proxmox’s broad planning estimate is approximately 1 GB per TB of used storage. Its ARC section gives a separate rule of thumb: at least 2 GiB base plus 1 GiB per TiB of storage. These are rough, differently phrased guidance in the same guide, not two required allocations to sum.
- Check for deduplication: If enabled or planned, account separately for its substantial, workload-dependent memory demand.
- Compare with physical RAM: Make sure installed memory can cover the planned host, guests, and storage needs together. If it cannot, reduce concurrent guest allocations, reconsider storage features such as deduplication, or add compatible memory.
What ZFS ARC means for memory planning
The Adaptive Replacement Cache (ARC) is ZFS’s memory cache. It uses RAM, and its size and limit matter when deciding how much memory remains for guests. Proxmox’s guide says allocating enough memory for ARC is crucial for I/O performance and cautions users to reduce it carefully. Its ARC sizing rule—at least 2 GiB base plus 1 GiB per TiB of storage—is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee that every workload will perform well at that amount. Read section 3.9.8 of the Proxmox VE Administration Guide.

Not as a timeless rule. The Proxmox VE 8 guide describes ZFS as using 50% of host memory for ARC by default, then states that new installations starting with Proxmox VE 8.1 set the ARC usage limit to 10% of installed physical memory, capped at 16 GiB. The 8.1 qualification is specifically about new installations; check your host’s version and installation history rather than assuming one setting applies to every system.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
ARC limits are adjustable, but lowering a maximum below the ARC’s current size does not by itself force an immediate shrink in the absence of memory pressure. OpenZFS documents version- and platform-dependent behavior in its Module Parameters reference. Check the documentation for the versions actually installed before changing a limit.
Deduplication changes the calculation
OpenZFS describes deduplication as resource intensive and advises against enabling it without a specific reason. Its guidance is to plan at least 1.25 GiB of RAM per 1 TiB of stored data; actual requirements depend on block sizes and how much data is duplicated. That estimate is specific to deduplication and should not be treated as the ordinary ZFS allowance. Review the OpenZFS deduplication documentation before deciding whether the feature is worthwhile for your data and memory budget.

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Check your platform before buying RAM
The sizing guidance does not identify a compatible DIMM type, generation, speed, capacity, rank, or ECC requirement. Those depend on the server or motherboard. Before purchasing, check its specifications for supported memory type, generation, capacity, speed, rank, and ECC support; do not infer a universal ECC requirement from ZFS or Proxmox’s memory estimates.
