For a first local-AI laptop, 16GB of RAM is a reasonable starting point for smaller models; 24GB–32GB gives more room for larger models, longer prompts and everyday apps. Those are planning tiers, not guarantees. The model’s weights, quantization, context length, software runtime and other memory use all affect whether it fits. On Apple Silicon, the CPU and GPU share unified memory. On Windows, system RAM and dedicated GPU memory (VRAM) are separate resources, so check both.

Why there is no single RAM requirement

Running an AI model locally means loading its model data onto your laptop and using software to generate responses on the device. The model’s parameter count, such as 8B or 32B, is a useful first clue about its size, but it does not tell you the full memory requirement. The model’s file format and quantization affect the space taken by its weights; the runtime, operating system and open applications also need memory.

Conversation context adds another demand. A short exchange and a very long prompt do not necessarily use the same amount of memory, even when they use the same model. So a laptop can be able to load a model in one configuration but struggle when you increase context or keep other memory-heavy apps open.

It helps to separate two questions: Can the model and its working data fit? and Can the laptop run it at a speed you find useful? More RAM can help with the first question, but it does not guarantee the second. Memory bandwidth, GPU support and cooling also affect performance.

Use these RAM tiers as a starting point

  • 8GB: A constrained option for small models and modest context, not a flexible general-purpose target. LM Studio says an 8GB Mac may still run its software with smaller models and modest context sizes.
  • 16GB: A sensible baseline for a first local-model laptop when your goal is smaller models and ordinary prompt lengths. LM Studio recommends at least 16GB on Windows and 16GB or more on Apple Silicon Macs.
  • 24GB–32GB: A more comfortable planning range if you want capacity for larger models, longer prompts or desktop apps alongside the model. It is not a promise that a particular model or context will work well.
  • 36GB–48GB or more: Consider this range if you intend to try substantially larger models. Approximate Apple Silicon weight estimates suggest that 32B–34B Q4 models alone take about 20–22GB, before context and system use.
  • 64GB–128GB: A range suggested in one Apple Silicon planning guide for 70B Q4 weights, estimated at about 40–43GB. This is an especially demanding use case, not a general laptop requirement.

For Windows, LM Studio’s published requirements also recommend at least 4GB of dedicated VRAM. That is a separate GPU-memory recommendation, not part of the system-RAM figure. See LM Studio’s system requirements for its current guidance.

How much memory model weights can take

The following are approximate Q4 weight-size estimates from Ivo Donker’s Apple Silicon guide, dated August 7, 2026. They describe the weights, not a complete laptop-memory requirement. The guide says it was compiled with AI assistance, so use its values as practical estimates rather than official vendor guarantees.

Model size Approximate Q4 weight memory Guide’s suggested Apple Silicon capacity
3B–4B 2.5–3.5GB Suitable for 8GB systems
7B–8B 5.0–5.5GB Suitable for 16GB systems
13B–14B 9.0–10.0GB 24GB or 32GB systems
32B–34B 20.0–22.0GB At least 36GB or 48GB
70B 40.0–43.0GB At least 64GB or 128GB

These pairs are not exact compatibility guarantees. Actual memory use varies with architecture, quantization details, context length, runtime and other running applications. A weight estimate also does not mean the model can use every remaining gigabyte: the operating system and the model’s working data need room too. Treat the table as a way to narrow your laptop search, then check the specific model and software you plan to use.

Why longer prompts need more memory

During a conversation, a model keeps information about tokens in its context in a working structure called the KV cache. As the context grows, this cache can take more memory. Context includes the prompt and conversation material available to the model, not just the latest question. That is why a setup that handles short chats may run into pressure when asked to process a long document or use a much larger context window.

For one illustrative estimate, the cited guide says an 8B model at 8,192 tokens often uses less than 1GB for its KV cache. At 32,768 or 128,000 tokens, cache use can rise by several additional gigabytes. These are not universal figures: architectures and runtimes differ, and the estimate does not cover the rest of the system’s memory needs.

If you are unsure how much context you will need, start with the model’s intended everyday workload rather than its largest advertised context window. Short questions, coding sessions and long-document analysis can have very different memory profiles. Choosing a lower context setting may make a constrained laptop more workable, but it also limits how much material the model can consider at once.

Apple Silicon and Windows use memory differently

Apple Silicon: one shared memory pool

On Apple Silicon Macs, CPU and GPU draw from unified memory. The installed capacity is therefore shared by the model, graphics work, macOS and open apps; it is not all available to model weights. This makes total capacity especially important when you plan to run a model while using a browser, editor or other desktop software.

LM Studio recommends 16GB or more for Apple Silicon, while noting that Macs with 8GB may run smaller models at modest context sizes. Those statements are useful starting guidance, not a guarantee for every model. A model whose weights nearly fill the installed capacity leaves little space for context and the rest of the computer.

Windows: system RAM and dedicated VRAM

On a Windows laptop with a dedicated GPU, system RAM and VRAM are separate pools. LM Studio’s guidance pairs at least 16GB of system RAM with at least 4GB of dedicated VRAM. The GPU memory available to a specific model depends on the laptop’s graphics hardware and configuration, so do not treat system RAM as a substitute for checking VRAM.

When model work exceeds available GPU memory, some computation may move to system memory and the CPU. A Windows Central report describes tests in which increasing context for selected models shifted some work from GPU to CPU and lowered measured token throughput. The publisher characterizes the testing as simple rather than in-depth scientific testing, so it illustrates a possible performance cost; it does not predict a specific speed on another laptop. See Windows Central’s reported Windows testing.

Choose a laptop by checking the whole configuration

  1. Pick a model and format before choosing a capacity. Look at the specific model’s parameter range and quantization, not only its name or download size. Quantized weights can be much smaller than higher-precision weights, but the weight file alone is not the whole memory budget.
  2. Set a realistic context target. Decide whether you mainly want short chats or expect to work with long prompts and documents. Larger context can add several gigabytes of cache use in some cases.
  3. Check the right memory pool for the platform. For Apple Silicon, compare the model’s weight estimate with total unified memory while allowing room for macOS, context and apps. For Windows, check system RAM and dedicated VRAM as distinct specifications.
  4. Look up the exact laptop’s upgrade options. Do not assume its memory can be upgraded. Verify the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and configuration before buying; capacity and upgradeability vary.
  5. Consider sustained performance, not just capacity. GPU support, memory bandwidth and thermal design influence speed. A machine with enough memory to load a model may still not deliver the response rate you expect.
  6. Check software and model compatibility. Confirm that the runtime you intend to use supports the laptop’s operating system and hardware. LM Studio documents its supported local workflows and runtimes at its documentation home.

What to expect after you install a local model

Start with a model and context setting that fit the laptop’s likely memory budget, and close applications you do not need if the system is under pressure. Then try the actual task you care about: a brief conversation is not a reliable test of long-document use. If a model loads but becomes slow with a longer prompt, memory pressure and GPU-to-CPU spillover are possibilities, especially on Windows, but the exact cause depends on the hardware and runtime.

Capacity and speed are related but different. More RAM can make a larger working set possible; it does not automatically make inference faster. Likewise, reducing context may reduce memory demand, but it changes what the model can take into account. Choose the trade-off based on whether your priority is fitting a model, handling long inputs or getting responsive output.

A practical purchase decision

If you have not settled on a specific model, 16GB is a reasonable minimum target for exploring smaller local models, with the understanding that context and other apps constrain headroom. For more flexibility, 24GB–32GB is a better planning target. If your goal is a 32B-class or 70B model, use the weight estimates as an early warning that these workloads can exceed what many laptop configurations can comfortably accommodate; check the exact hardware, model format and runtime rather than assuming a nominal RAM figure is sufficient.

On a Mac, compare total unified memory with the model’s weights plus room for the operating system, context and apps. On Windows, evaluate dedicated VRAM alongside system RAM. In either case, make the decision from the workload you will actually run, and verify the exact laptop’s memory configuration and upgradeability before purchase.
