How Much RAM Do You Need for Gaming, Streaming, and Everyday Use?

A practical guide to RAM capacity for everyday computing, modern games, and one-PC streaming—with clear guidance on minimums, multitasking, and compatibility.

For a modern gaming PC, 16 GB of RAM is a sensible starting point. Choose 32 GB if you regularly run a game alongside streaming tools, chat, or browser tabs and want more room for those simultaneous tasks. For general everyday use, Microsoft Support recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. These are practical guideposts, not guarantees: the right capacity depends on what you run at once and what your computer supports.

Quick recommendations by workload

RAM capacity is best chosen for the whole workload, not for one application in isolation. A computer running a game alone has a different set of demands from one running the same game alongside capture software, a browser, chat, and streaming tools. The following recommendations distinguish basic use, gaming, and multitasking rather than treating one number as right for everyone.

Workload Capacity guidance What the guidance means
Basic browsing, documents, or online video At least 4 GB Microsoft Support’s basic-use guidance; it is not a gaming recommendation.
General everyday use 8 GB Microsoft Support recommends this for keeping a device running longer term.
Photo or video editing and other higher-performance projects 16 GB or more Microsoft Support says this may be a good fit for these more demanding uses.
Modern gaming At least 16 GB Intel’s gaming guidance; it advises more when multitasking.
Gaming with Discord, browsers, or streaming tools 32 GB can help Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance presents this as added multitasking room, not a universal minimum.
OBS Studio considered by itself 4 GB minimum; 8 GB recommended The OBS Studio Steam listing’s app-level figures do not size a simultaneous game-and-stream setup.

These recommendations come from Microsoft Support, Intel, Microsoft Windows, and the OBS Studio Steam listing. They describe different contexts; an app’s listed minimum is not the same as a comfortable capacity for the entire computer.

Think of the figures as decision points rather than a ranking where the largest number is always best. If you use a computer mainly for documents, browsing, and video, the basic-use and general-use recommendations are the relevant comparison. If you play modern games, start with Intel’s 16 GB guidance. If you commonly run several tools at the same time, consider the added room 32 GB can provide.

Why a Windows minimum is not a useful gaming target

Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater as the minimum for installing or upgrading to Windows 11. That figure tells you the operating system’s stated floor for that purpose. It does not mean a 4 GB computer will be comfortable for everyday multitasking, modern games, or streaming.

Microsoft Support separately says to aim for at least 4 GB for basic browsing, documents, or online video, and recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. The difference matters: an installation minimum answers whether a system meets a narrow requirement, while a practical recommendation is about the demands of using the computer. If you are choosing a gaming machine, use the gaming and workload guidance—not the Windows installation minimum—as your starting point.

That distinction is useful when comparing product specifications, too. A computer may meet an operating-system floor without offering the capacity you want for your everyday apps or games. Treat the Windows minimum as a compatibility threshold for installation or upgrade, not as a promise of smooth performance under heavier workloads.

How to choose between 16 GB and 32 GB for gaming

Choose 16 GB as a starting point for modern games

Intel recommends at least 16 GB for modern games. That is a useful baseline when gaming is the main demanding task, but it is not a promise that every title or every computer will perform well at that capacity. The individual game, other software running at the same time, and the computer’s supported configuration all matter.

Do not choose RAM by screen resolution alone. The reviewed guidance does not establish a rule that a particular resolution requires a particular memory capacity. Instead, decide based on the applications you expect to run together and check the requirements for the specific game and system when those details are available.

Consider 32 GB when several demanding tasks overlap

Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance describes 16 GB as a practical starting point and says 32 GB can help when running Discord, browsers, or streaming tools alongside games. That makes 32 GB a reasonable headroom target for people who regularly combine these tasks. It does not make 32 GB mandatory for every game or every person who streams.

The useful distinction is whether those extra applications are part of your normal session. If you usually launch a game alone, the case for more capacity is different from a routine setup that also keeps chat, multiple browser tabs, a stream layout, and capture software active. More capacity can provide room for a heavier combined workload, but it cannot compensate for every other system limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, someone who plays a game while keeping Discord open has a different set of simultaneous tasks from someone who also runs OBS, browser sources, chat, and other streaming tools. Microsoft’s examples specifically include Discord, browsers, and streaming tools as reasons 32 GB can help. They support considering extra headroom for that kind of multitasking, not assuming every player needs it.

Gaming and streaming: size the combined workload

When you stream or record while gaming on one computer, the relevant question is not just how much memory OBS needs. The game, OBS, browser sources, chat, and other tools may all be running at the same time. The OBS Studio Steam listing gives 4 GB as a minimum and 8 GB as recommended for the app, but those figures describe the application listing—not a guarantee that the whole computer can handle a particular game-and-stream configuration.

The OBS Project’s system-requirements page says, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its page does not give a RAM target. It notes that streaming capability depends on broader configuration factors, including encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Consequently, neither the OBS app listing nor a single RAM number can promise a stable stream for every setup.

For a one-PC gaming-and-streaming workload, 32 GB is a sensible option to consider when you regularly keep those additional tools open, in line with Microsoft’s gaming guidance. If your current machine has 16 GB and the experience is poor, do not assume memory capacity is automatically the cause: check actual use during your normal session and consider the other parts of the streaming configuration too.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical lesson is to separate an app’s own stated requirements from the requirements of everything running together. OBS’s Steam listing is useful for understanding the application-level figures, but it does not account for the game, browser sources, chat, or the particular streaming scene you use. OBS also points to encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as relevant configuration factors. A memory upgrade alone therefore cannot guarantee that recording or streaming will work well.

Everyday use: choose for what you do at the same time

For basic browsing, documents, or online video, Microsoft Support says at least 4 GB. For a general-purpose computer intended to remain useful longer term, it recommends 8 GB. People who also do photo or video editing, or other higher-performance projects, may find 16 GB or more a better fit.

“Everyday use” is not one fixed workload. A few lightweight tasks at a time differ from a habit of keeping many applications and tabs open while editing media or taking calls. Use Microsoft’s figures as starting points, then account for your own simultaneous workload rather than assuming the word “everyday” means the same thing for every user.

So a person choosing a computer for basic web use can begin by considering the 4 GB basic-use guidance, while someone looking for a longer-term general-purpose device can use 8 GB as Microsoft Support’s recommendation. If photo or video editing is part of the plan, its 16 GB-or-more guidance is more relevant. These are distinctions by workload, not guarantees that a particular amount will suit every application or device.

Before buying or upgrading RAM

Capacity is only one part of compatibility. The correct memory generation and form factor, the computer’s maximum supported capacity, and whether its memory can be upgraded depend on the specific device. Intel advises checking documentation for the system or processor before choosing memory. A laptop may use a different module type from a desktop, and some laptops may not have upgradeable memory.

  1. Identify your exact computer or motherboard. Record the model so you can consult the manufacturer’s documentation rather than selecting a kit based only on a target capacity.
  2. Check memory compatibility and limits. Confirm the required memory generation, form factor, supported total capacity, and upgradeability in the system or motherboard documentation.
  3. Decide whether more capacity fits your workload. Use the workload guidance above: 16 GB is Intel’s starting point for modern gaming; 32 GB can help when gaming is regularly combined with chat, browsers, or streaming tools.
  4. Observe your normal workload before spending. Check memory use while doing the tasks that feel constrained. If performance remains poor, RAM capacity may not be the limiting factor.
  5. Choose only a compatible kit. A generic “32 GB kit” is not enough information to establish compatibility with an unspecified computer; match the device’s documented requirements.

Adding RAM does not automatically increase game frame rates or solve streaming problems. If memory use does not point to capacity as a constraint, review the full workload and configuration instead. OBS identifies encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as factors relevant to streaming capability.

Before you shop, verify the target capacity against the exact computer or motherboard documentation. Check memory generation, form factor, supported capacity, and whether the memory is upgradeable; a laptop may use a different module type or have memory that cannot be changed. The available details do not identify one universal kit for every system, so a category such as a compatible 32 GB RAM kit is only a starting point until you confirm the device specifications.

Common RAM-sizing mistakes

  • Treating the Windows minimum as a comfort target. Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is an installation or upgrade requirement, not a gaming recommendation.
  • Using OBS’s app requirements to size a streaming PC. The 4 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended figures on its Steam listing are for OBS Studio as an application; they do not account for a game and other tools running at once.
  • Assuming 32 GB is required for all gaming or streaming. Microsoft’s guidance says it can help with added multitasking; it does not make it a universal minimum.
  • Assuming more RAM fixes any slowdown. Streaming and gaming performance depend on more than capacity, so check the actual workload and configuration before upgrading.
  • Buying before checking the device. Supported capacity, memory type, form factor, and upgradeability vary by computer.
  • Choosing capacity from resolution alone. The guidance here does not establish a resolution-to-RAM rule; workload and platform compatibility are the better decision points.

Another common mistake is to treat a recommendation as a statistical claim about what all gamers or streamers use. The figures here are product and support guidance for particular contexts: they do not establish an average amount used by gamers, nor do they predict the needs of every game, stream, or computer.

A practical decision

For a general everyday computer, use 8 GB as Microsoft Support’s longer-term recommendation; for modern gaming, use 16 GB as Intel’s starting point. If gaming usually happens alongside chat, browsers, or streaming tools, consider 32 GB for more multitasking room, as Microsoft’s gaming guidance suggests. Before upgrading, verify the computer supports the memory you intend to buy and check whether capacity is actually the constraint in your normal workload.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 4 GB of RAM enough for a gaming PC?

Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater as the Windows 11 installation or upgrade minimum, and Microsoft Support says at least 4 GB can suit basic browsing, documents, or online video. That is not a gaming target. Intel recommends at least 16 GB for modern games.

Is 16 GB enough for modern gaming?

Intel recommends at least 16 GB for modern games, so it is a reasonable starting point when gaming is the main demanding task. Your game, other applications, and computer configuration still matter, and Intel advises more memory if you multitask.

Do I need 32 GB of RAM to stream games?

Not necessarily. Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance says 32 GB can help when you run Discord, browsers, or streaming tools alongside games; it is not a universal requirement. The combined workload matters more than OBS’s app-only memory figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much RAM does OBS need?

The OBS Studio Steam listing gives 4 GB as a minimum and 8 GB as recommended for the application. Those figures do not size a whole PC running OBS, a game, browser sources, chat, and other tools at once. OBS’s official system-requirements page does not set a RAM target.

Will adding RAM improve my game’s frame rate or fix streaming problems?

Not automatically. Check memory use during your normal workload before upgrading. OBS notes that streaming capability also depends on factors such as encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so capacity may not be the limiting factor.

How do I know which RAM kit is compatible with my computer?

Check the computer, motherboard, or processor documentation for the required memory generation, form factor, supported capacity, and whether memory is upgradeable. Laptop modules can differ from desktop memory, and some laptops cannot be upgraded.

The Bottom Line

Use 8 GB as Microsoft Support’s longer-term guide for everyday use and 16 GB as Intel’s starting point for modern gaming. If you regularly game with chat, browsers, or streaming tools open, 32 GB can provide useful multitasking headroom—but it is not mandatory for everyone. Check your computer’s supported memory and monitor your normal workload before buying, since more RAM cannot solve every performance problem.
