For basic browsing, documents, and streaming, 8 GB is a reasonable target. For gaming, start at 16 GB; choose 32 GB if you also run demanding background apps or want room for creative work. For content creation, follow the software and project requirements: Adobe lists 16 GB for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher in Premiere Pro, while Blender recommends 32 GB. These are capacity guidelines, not guarantees of performance.
How much RAM is enough for everyday use?
For web browsing, documents, and streaming, 8 GB is a reasonable basic target. Microsoft says 4 GB can cover these activities, but recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term. The 4 GB figure is not a comfortable target for heavier everyday multitasking. Microsoft Support describes RAM as a device’s short-term memory: active applications and files use it while the computer is on.

Is 8 GB enough for Windows 11?
Windows 11 lists 4 GB as its minimum memory requirement. That is an installation baseline, not a recommendation for a smooth experience across everyday tasks. Microsoft’s separate general-use guidance recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.

For a gaming PC, 16 GB is a reasonable starting point. Consider 32 GB if you commonly keep a browser, voice chat, streaming software, or other demanding applications open while playing. There is no single RAM figure that applies to every game; check the current requirements for the specific titles you play.

- Advertised speeds are reached via XMP or the equivalent profile (such as DOCP or A-XMP) in your BIOS profiles. Actual performance varies by system configuration (Motherboard/CPU compatibility). Plug-and-play speeds follow JEDEC standards.
Capacity is only one part of a gaming system. More RAM does not by itself guarantee higher frame rates or better game performance, and these recommendations are not benchmark results.
How much RAM do you need for content creation?
The answer depends on the application and the media or project you work with. Microsoft says 16 GB or more might suit photo and video editing or other high-performance projects. For specific applications, their own requirements provide a more useful guide than a general rule.

Adobe’s macOS requirements separately list 16 GB of unified memory for Apple silicon. Unified memory is not the same as upgradeable desktop DIMMs, so do not treat those figures as interchangeable hardware configurations.

Blender requirements
Blender lists 8 GB as its minimum and 32 GB as recommended. The figures alone do not establish how much memory a particular scene or workflow will use. Blender’s requirements page is the source for these listed values.
Is 16 GB of RAM enough, or should you get 32 GB?
Choose 16 GB if your main use is gaming or general computing and you do not regularly combine several demanding workloads. Choose 32 GB if you want one capacity that can cover everyday tasks, gaming with background apps, and moderate creative work. It aligns with Adobe’s 4K-and-higher guidance for Windows Premiere Pro and Blender’s recommended amount.

Heavier creative projects may need more, and the cited requirements do not establish a universal capacity for every creator. Treat minimums as “can run” guidance, not as a promise of a smooth workflow.
| Capacity | Reasonable fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 8 GB | Basic browsing, documents, and streaming | Microsoft recommends 8 GB for longer-term use; it is not a blanket recommendation for gaming or serious editing. |

| 32 GB | Gaming alongside demanding apps; 4K-and-higher Premiere Pro on Windows; Blender’s recommended capacity | Adobe says 32 GB or more for 4K and higher; Blender lists 32 GB as recommended. Neither figure guarantees performance. |
What to check before buying or upgrading RAM
Do not assume a generic memory kit will fit your computer. Some laptops have soldered memory or other upgrade limits, while many desktops use replaceable modules. Before buying, check the exact device or motherboard documentation for:
- Whether the memory is replaceable or soldered.
- The supported memory type and generation.
- The maximum supported capacity.
- The number of memory slots and which are available.
Also distinguish Windows PC memory from Apple silicon unified memory when comparing capacity guidance. If your device cannot be upgraded, the amount it shipped with may set the practical limit.
