How Much RAM Do You Need for a Windows PC?

Microsoft lists 4 GB as the Windows 11 RAM minimum, recommends 8 GB for longer-term use, and says 16 GB or more may suit editing and high-performance work.

For most everyday Windows PCs, 8 GB of RAM is a sensible baseline. Microsoft describes 4 GB as the minimum for Windows 11, recommends 8 GB for keeping a device running long term, and says 16 GB or more may suit editing and other high-performance projects. The right amount depends on what you do—not just whether Windows will install.

How much RAM should you choose?

Use case Practical guidance
Basic browsing, documents, or streaming Microsoft says to aim for at least 4 GB for these basic activities, but recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term. For a new everyday Windows PC, 8 GB is the more useful baseline. Microsoft Support’s memory guidance does not promise that every workload will feel equally smooth at a given capacity.
Photo or video editing and other high-performance projects Microsoft says 16 GB or more may be a good fit. Treat that as workload-based guidance, not a universal requirement for all editing or performance-focused use.
Copilot+ PC Microsoft lists 16 GB DDR5 or LPDDR5 as a minimum for this specific PC class. This is separate from the standard Windows 11 RAM requirement and should not be read as a requirement for every Windows 11 PC or every Copilot feature.

These figures are Microsoft’s requirements and recommendations, not results from a comparative performance test. They are starting points; the memory needs of a particular application or the number of demanding tasks you run at once can change what feels adequate.

What does the Windows 11 minimum mean?

Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM as the Windows 11 minimum. That is an operating-system requirement, not a promise of comfortable performance for every person or workload. A PC can meet the RAM figure and still need to satisfy Windows 11’s other hardware requirements.

Microsoft notes that some PCs below the minimum may have options for adding memory and recommends checking with the manufacturer or a retailer. Windows 11 system requirements should be checked as a whole; RAM alone does not establish whether a PC is eligible.

How to decide between 8 GB and 16 GB or more

Choose 8 GB for everyday use

If your usual tasks are web browsing, documents, and streaming, 8 GB is a reasonable target for a general-purpose Windows PC. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes the 4 GB basic-use floor from its 8 GB recommendation for longer-term use, making 8 GB the stronger baseline when choosing a device rather than merely checking whether it meets the minimum.

Consider 16 GB or more for demanding projects

For photo or video editing and other high-performance projects, Microsoft says 16 GB or more may be a good fit. The recommendation is not a blanket rule: the specific programs and tasks you rely on matter, and Microsoft’s general guidance does not set one capacity for every creative or demanding workload.

Can you add RAM to a Windows PC?

Some PCs can take additional memory, but upgradeability and compatibility depend on the exact model. Before buying modules, check the computer’s model-specific manufacturer instructions for whether its memory can be upgraded and which memory type it accepts. Microsoft’s general memory guidance does not establish a universal module type, speed, or slot count.

  • Find the precise PC model, not just the product family or brand.
  • Confirm in the manufacturer’s documentation whether RAM is upgradeable.
  • Check the supported memory type and any model-specific installation instructions before ordering.

If the memory cannot be upgraded, compare replacement PCs by installed RAM and how well that capacity fits your workload; do not assume a later upgrade will be possible.

Does Windows 10’s old RAM minimum still matter?

Microsoft’s legacy Windows 10 installation requirements listed 1 GB for 32-bit Windows and 2 GB for 64-bit Windows. Those figures are not useful present-day buying recommendations: Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs continue to function, but no longer receive security updates or technical support through standard support. Microsoft lists consumer Extended Security Updates as an option through October 12, 2027. Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support information explains the current support status, while its Windows 10 system requirements page records the older installation minimums.
