It is not a universal speed upgrade: adding memory does not make a processor or graphics chip faster, and the benefit depends on your computer’s workload and hardware.
What does RAM do?
RAM is your computer’s short-term working memory. When you use an app or open a file, the computer brings the data it needs from storage into RAM so it is available for active work. RAM is not long-term storage: its contents are lost when the device shuts down or restarts.

Think of RAM as workspace. More capacity can give active apps and tasks more room, which may help when you switch between programs or work with large files. Microsoft describes additional memory as enabling a device to do more at once without slowdowns. That is a conditional benefit, not a guarantee for every computer.
Will more RAM make your computer faster?
It can improve responsiveness when the work you are doing is pressing against the memory already installed. In that situation, compatible additional capacity can reduce memory pressure and help more of your active work stay ready. You may notice the difference in multitasking or demanding applications.

If your workload is not limited by RAM, adding capacity may produce little visible change. RAM does not directly increase processor speed, graphics capability, or storage speed. The available guidance does not establish a percentage improvement or promise a particular result for an individual computer.
How much RAM do you need?
The right amount depends on what you do, the apps you use, and your computer’s limits. Minimum operating-system requirements are not the same as a recommendation for comfortable use. Microsoft’s consumer guidance and Crucial’s manufacturer recommendations use different categories, so treat them as reference points rather than a universal standard.

| Use or requirement | RAM guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 minimum | 4 GB | Microsoft’s stated minimum hardware requirement for Windows 11, not a general performance recommendation. |
| Basic browsing, documents, and streaming | At least 4 GB | Microsoft’s consumer guidance for basic use. |
| Keeping a device running long term | 8 GB | Microsoft’s suggested amount; it is not a guarantee of future compatibility with every app or workload. |
| Photo or video editing, or high-performance work | 16 GB or more | Microsoft says this may suit these workloads. Check the requirements of the particular software you use. |
| Casual use | At least 8 GB | Crucial’s manufacturer guidance. |
| Intermediate productivity and multitasking | At least 16 GB | Crucial’s manufacturer guidance. |
| Professional work, gaming, or graphic design | At least 32 GB | Crucial’s manufacturer guidance; demanding professional work may call for more. |
These figures come from different sources and are not a single industry-wide threshold. Software requirements change, and some tasks within a category need more memory than others. Check the current requirements for your operating system and the exact applications you plan to run.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes a Windows 11 PC need 16 GB of RAM?
No. Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum RAM requirement for Windows 11. Separately, Microsoft specifies 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory for Copilot+ PCs, alongside other hardware requirements such as a qualifying NPU. That specification applies to Copilot+ PC eligibility, not to every Windows 11 computer. Check Microsoft’s current requirements for the specific version and device you are considering.

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
What should you check before upgrading RAM?
Compatibility is specific to the computer or motherboard. Before buying a kit, confirm that memory is replaceable or upgradeable and verify the supported memory type, physical form, capacity, and configuration for your exact model.
- Identify the exact model. Find the full computer model or, for a custom desktop, the motherboard model. Use its manual or service documentation rather than relying on a broad product-family name.
- Confirm there is an upgrade path. Some systems may not have user-accessible or replaceable memory. Check the model’s documentation before opening the computer or ordering parts.
- Check memory generation and form factor. Verify the supported DDR generation and whether the system uses desktop DIMMs or laptop SO-DIMMs. These are not interchangeable.
- Check limits and layout. Look up the maximum supported capacity, number of slots, installed modules, and supported speeds in the manufacturer’s documentation or a system-specific compatibility selector.
- Choose a configuration that fits. Decide whether adding a module or replacing the existing modules is the better match for the system’s limits and your target capacity. If considering a matched kit or particular slot arrangement, follow the guidance for your exact platform.
- Compare the total cost with the upgrade path. A compatible kit is useful only if it makes sense for the computer you have; weigh its cost against the machine’s limitations and how long you intend to keep it.
What are XMP and EXPO, and do you need them?
XMP and EXPO are optional memory speed profiles, not extra RAM capacity. Crucial says using these profiles requires compatible memory, CPU, and motherboard, and enabling the profile in BIOS or UEFI. Support and settings vary by platform. Confirm compatibility before changing firmware settings, and do not assume that enabling a profile will produce a visible improvement in every workload.

How do you install a desktop RAM upgrade safely?
Follow the instructions for the exact computer or motherboard. Crucial’s desktop installation guidance advises using compatible modules, consulting the owner’s manual, shutting down and unplugging the system, and managing static electricity while handling components. Laptop opening procedures differ by model; use its service instructions rather than assuming the desktop procedure applies.
