There is no single RAM or storage requirement for “Linux.” The right amount depends on the distribution, desktop environment, installation type and the work you expect to do. For an older laptop, use the distribution’s comfortable-use recommendation as your target, treat its minimum as an installation floor, and choose a lighter desktop when the hardware is constrained. The official figures below show why the answer differs between Linux Mint, Ubuntu Desktop and Debian.
Official RAM and storage requirements compared
These figures come from the projects’ own documentation, but they describe different contexts. Linux Mint publishes both a minimum and a comfortable-use recommendation. Ubuntu’s current 26.04 LTS Desktop figure is explicitly for a comfortable experience. Debian’s stable amd64 guide describes a desktop installation, assumes swap is enabled and a non-live image is used, and excludes your personal files from the disk estimate.

| Distribution and source | RAM | Storage | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux Mint FAQ | 2 GB minimum; 4 GB recommended for comfortable use | 20 GB minimum; 100 GB recommended for comfortable use | Also lists a minimum display resolution of 1024×768; the FAQ is undated and can change. |
| Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop | 6 GB minimum for a comfortable experience | 25 GB of free space for a comfortable experience | Also specifies a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better. Canonical suggests an Ubuntu flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu for lower-specification systems. |
| Debian stable, amd64 installation guide | 1 GB minimum with a desktop; 2 GB recommended | 10 GB of hard-drive space | Values assume swap and a non-live image, do not include user files and data, and may differ for another architecture or installation type. |
The table is not a speed ranking. It compares published requirements, not benchmark results. A machine that meets a minimum may install and start a graphical desktop while still feeling cramped during ordinary multitasking.

A minimum is an installation floor
A minimum figure tells you the conditions under which the project considers installation or basic operation possible. It is not a promise that a browser, office application, file manager and several background services will remain responsive together. Debian describes its values as recommended minimum system requirements and cautions that ignoring its suggestions can lead to frustration. Its allowance also depends on swap being available and on using a non-live installer.

A recommendation leaves room for normal use
A comfortable-use target is the more useful number when the laptop will be your everyday computer. Mint’s separate recommendation demonstrates the gap between “will install” and “has room for a normal desktop.” Ubuntu labels its published RAM and free-space figures as requirements for a comfortable experience rather than as a bare boot threshold.
Desktop choice changes the demand
Linux is a family of distributions and desktop environments, not one fixed program. Debian specifically suggests less resource-hungry choices such as Xfce, IceWM or Window Maker instead of GNOME or KDE Plasma on older or low-end systems. Ubuntu directs users with lower specifications toward flavors including Xubuntu and Lubuntu. Choosing one of these options changes the software environment you install; it does not upgrade the processor, graphics hardware, wireless adapter or failing storage device.
How much RAM should your older laptop have?
If the laptop has very little memory
Start with a distribution and desktop that publish low-memory guidance. Debian’s desktop figures are the lowest of the three references, and its documentation names lightweight window managers and desktop environments for older systems. You should still enable swap as assumed by Debian’s guide and understand that the result is an installation-level target, not a guarantee of effortless multitasking.
If the laptop has a modest memory configuration
Mint’s comfortable-use recommendation is a practical target for an older general-purpose laptop that will run a conventional desktop. If the installed RAM is below that recommendation, a lighter desktop or a distribution with a lower published target may be a better fit than forcing a heavier default environment.

If you want Ubuntu Desktop itself
Use the current release’s own target rather than borrowing a number from Mint or Debian. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop publishes a 6 GB RAM requirement for a comfortable experience. The requirement is tied to that release and should be checked again if you install a different Ubuntu version.
Do not infer a universal upgrade size
Distribution requirements cannot tell you whether a particular laptop accepts more memory. Some laptops have accessible slots, some have soldered RAM, and maximum capacity and module type vary by model. Before buying anything, locate the manufacturer’s service documentation for the exact model and verify the supported memory type, slot arrangement and maximum capacity.
How much storage should you plan?
Separate system space from your own data
The operating system is only one part of the storage plan. Debian explicitly says its disk figure excludes users’ files and other data and advises allocating generously for them. Documents, photos, downloads, application packages, backups and future updates all compete for the same free space. A drive that barely meets an installer’s number can become inconvenient as soon as you begin using the laptop.
Recommended Free Tools
Use “free space” correctly
Ubuntu’s requirement is stated as free storage space, while Mint gives a disk-space minimum and a much larger comfortable-use recommendation. When checking an existing drive, distinguish total capacity from the space actually available for the Linux installation. If another operating system or a recovery partition remains, its space is not automatically available to Linux.

Leave room for the way you use the laptop
Choose a larger drive or plan external storage when the laptop will hold substantial personal data. The official figures do not establish a universal drive size, interface, form factor or performance benefit for an upgrade. Those details are model-specific and must come from the laptop’s service documentation.
A decision process for an older laptop
- Identify the exact hardware. Record the model number, installed RAM, storage capacity and available free space. Note the display resolution and whether the laptop uses a replaceable drive or memory, but confirm those details in the manufacturer’s documentation rather than assuming from its age.
- Define the desktop you want. Decide whether you need Ubuntu Desktop’s default environment, a conventional Mint desktop, or a lighter environment such as Xfce, IceWM, Window Maker, Xubuntu or Lubuntu.
- Read the requirements for that exact release. Requirements change. Ubuntu’s figures here apply to 26.04 LTS Desktop; Mint’s FAQ is changeable; Debian’s figures are for the stable amd64 guide and a specified installation context.
- Compare against the comfortable-use target. If the machine only meets a minimum, expect less headroom. Prefer a lighter desktop or another distribution whose published recommendation matches the hardware instead of treating the minimum as an everyday-performance guarantee.
- Reserve space for personal files. Subtract space needed by any existing operating system and recovery partitions, then leave room for your documents and other data. Debian’s published disk number is not a complete personal-computer storage plan.
- Check upgrade compatibility before spending money. Use the exact service manual to verify whether RAM is soldered, which modules and capacities are supported, and which storage interface and form factor fit. Do not buy a generic module or drive based only on the laptop’s age.
- Recheck release-specific requirements immediately before installation. The Ubuntu page and Mint FAQ can change, and Debian’s stable guide can differ by architecture or installation method.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by an internet-wide “Linux minimum”
There is no single Linux minimum. Applying Debian’s installation floor to Ubuntu Desktop, or applying Ubuntu’s comfortable-use requirement to every lightweight Debian setup, mixes unlike contexts. Always name the distribution, release, desktop and installation type when evaluating the laptop.
Confusing a live session with an installed system
Debian’s figures assume a non-live image. A live environment has different constraints because it runs from removable media and loads the session without the normal installed-system arrangement. Do not treat Debian’s table as a promise that every live image will behave the same way.
Ignoring swap and personal data
Debian’s memory figures assume swap, and its storage figure excludes user files. Omitting either qualification makes the numbers look more generous than they are. Preserve the assumptions when comparing a laptop with the published table.

Assuming a lightweight desktop fixes every hardware problem
A less resource-hungry desktop can reduce software overhead, but it cannot repair a failing drive, replace an underpowered processor or guarantee support for a particular Wi-Fi adapter. The material above establishes distribution requirements and desktop guidance, not hardware-repair outcomes.
Buying an upgrade before checking the model
RAM and storage upgrades are model-dependent. The published Linux requirements do not identify a compatible module, maximum capacity, connector or drive model. Confirm those details first; if the laptop has soldered memory or a proprietary storage arrangement, a software choice may be the only practical change.

Linux Mint
Mint gives readers both ends of the decision: a lower installation threshold and a separate comfortable-use recommendation. That makes it useful when you want a conventional desktop but need to distinguish “can install” from “has sensible headroom.” Its FAQ also sets a 1024×768 minimum display resolution, which matters on older screens.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop
Ubuntu’s current Desktop requirement is framed around a comfortable experience and includes a processor condition as well as RAM and free storage. If the laptop falls below that profile, Canonical’s own guidance is to consider a flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu rather than assuming the default Desktop image is the right fit.

Debian stable
Debian provides the broadest low-end flexibility in this comparison, but its figures carry the most explicit assumptions. The memory values presume swap and a non-live image, the storage value excludes personal data, and the guide recommends lighter environments for older systems. Less memory or disk space may work for experienced users, but Debian presents that as a choice requiring care rather than as a general recommendation.
What the published figures cannot answer
They cannot determine the maximum RAM in your laptop, identify a compatible memory module, confirm an SSD or hard-drive interface, predict battery life, or guarantee that every device will work after installation. They also do not provide a comparative benchmark between Mint, Ubuntu flavors and Debian desktops. For those questions, use the laptop manufacturer’s model-specific documentation and the release documentation for the exact Linux version you plan to install.
Practical recommendation
Use the table as a matching exercise. A machine that only satisfies a low installation floor calls for Debian or another explicitly lightweight desktop and realistic expectations. A laptop that reaches Mint’s comfortable-use target has a clearer path to a conventional desktop. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop should be evaluated against its own comfortable-experience requirement, with a lighter flavor considered when the hardware is below that level. In every case, plan storage for personal data rather than reserving only the installer’s minimum, and verify upgrade compatibility by exact model before purchasing hardware.
