There is no single PSI setting that is safe or effective for every pressure-washing job. Choose a setup for the surface: use a broad spray and more distance on delicate materials, test a hidden patch, and follow your washer’s manual. PSI is only part of the picture—GPM, the nozzle, distance, and surface condition also affect cleaning.
What PSI and GPM tell you
PSI measures pressure; GPM measures water flow. SIMPSON Cleaning explains that pressure helps scrub dirt loose while flow rinses it away in its pressure-washer FAQ. Neither number alone determines how a washer will affect a particular surface. The nozzle pattern and distance change how concentrated the spray is when it reaches the material, and age, coatings, and soil can change how much cleaning a surface can tolerate.

A washer’s advertised maximum PSI is not a direction to use full pressure on every job. Treat maker recommendations as guidance for the stated task, not universal limits for every machine or material. Start with the manual’s recommended setup, a wide spray, and a greater distance; move closer only if needed and after testing an inconspicuous area.
Pressure-washing settings by job
| Job | Starting guidance | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Wood deck | SIMPSON Cleaning says about 1,500 PSI or less is sufficient for most deck surfaces. Its deck-cleaning guidance suggests a 25° nozzle for more stubborn buildup and a 40° nozzle for newer, less damaged, or synthetic decking. | This is manufacturer guidance, not an independent standard. Softer or older wood is more vulnerable: test a small area and stop if fibers rise or marks appear. |
| Vehicle or painted, delicate surface | Use a broad pattern, such as a compatible 40° nozzle, and begin farther away. The SIMPSON operator manual associates the 40° tip with vehicles, wood, vinyl, painted siding, and other delicate or painted surfaces. | The cited sources do not establish a universal PSI for all vehicles, paint conditions, or washers. High-pressure spray can damage paint, glass, trim, wood, and delicate objects. |
| Siding | SIMPSON’s FAQ recommends a 40° nozzle for most siding and starting farther away. Its exterior-cleaning guidance specifies 25° or 40° for wood siding and at least two feet away for stucco. | Choose for the siding type and condition. Avoid directing spray upward into aluminum overlaps, and repair damaged cement siding before washing. |
| Sidewalks and concrete | The operator manual includes concrete among hard-surface uses for narrower tips. A surface-cleaner attachment can be useful on broad flat areas such as sidewalks. | Do not default to the most concentrated nozzle. Check the washer instructions and attachment compatibility before use. |
How to set up and clean safely
- Check the washer manual. Confirm the recommended nozzle, operating instructions, and whether the machine allows detergent use for the task.
- Choose the broadest suitable spray. A wider pattern is a cautious starting point for painted, delicate, or uncertain surfaces; a narrower pattern concentrates the spray.
- Start farther away. Test an inconspicuous patch, then adjust distance gradually if cleaning is insufficient. Stop if the material shows damage.
- Apply detergent at low pressure. SIMPSON’s FAQ specifies a black low-pressure nozzle for soap. Use only compatible pressure-washer soaps and chemicals, and follow both the washer manual and cleaner label.
- Rinse with a suitable pattern. Use a setup appropriate to the surface rather than assuming that detergent application and rinsing call for the same pressure.
When a surface cleaner makes sense
A surface-cleaner attachment can help cover broad flat areas more evenly than working a sidewalk strip by strip with a spray wand. Match the accessory to the washer rather than treating its rating as a target for every cleaning job: SIMPSON’s Universal 15-inch cold-water Surface Cleaner 80299 listing gives a recommended compatibility range of 1,500–3,700 PSI. That figure describes the accessory’s range, not the pressure a particular surface requires. Check connector compatibility as well as the washer’s specifications.

Choose a washer for the work, not just its maximum PSI
For household work such as decks, driveways, and patio furniture, SIMPSON says relatively low pressure can be suitable; tougher jobs may call for a higher-pressure machine. Consider both PSI and GPM alongside the surfaces you expect to clean, and follow the nozzle and distance guidance in the washer manual. For context, RYOBI lists its RY142012 at 2,100 PSI and 1.2 GPM on its product page. Those are that model’s specifications, not a universal requirement or proof that it should be used at full pressure on every listed surface.
