How Much Portable SSD Storage Do You Need for Backups, Photos, and Video?

Size a portable SSD from your measured files, expected video hours and bitrate, backup history, and room for growth—not a generic photos-per-terabyte estimate.

Choose a portable SSD based on the files you will actually store, the backup history you want to keep, and how quickly your data is likely to grow. Measure existing libraries and folders, estimate future video from its bitrate and recording hours, then leave room beyond that total. There is no single capacity that fits every photo and video workflow—and a single SSD should not be your only copy of important files.

Start with the data you need to store

Check the used size of the photo libraries, video folders, and other files you want on the drive. Base the estimate on the data itself, not the advertised capacity of your computer, camera, or phone. Include every library and any files that sit outside it.

That last check matters for Mac Photos users: Apple says image files stored outside a Photos library are not included when you copy the library. Identify those referenced files and account for them separately. If you use multiple libraries, include each one in your total. Apple explains how to back up a photo library on Mac.

Estimate photo storage from your actual files

Photo counts alone are a poor sizing guide. File size changes with camera resolution and format, and RAW files generally take more space than JPEGs. Sony’s camera memory-card guidance puts it plainly: “RAW images: you’ll need larger capacity cards as these files consume much more space.” The advice concerns memory-card capacity, but the file-size factors also matter when estimating how much of your photo collection will fit on an SSD. Sony’s guide covers formats, resolution, and other card-capacity factors.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

For an existing collection, use the measured size of the library or folders. For a new camera workflow, check a representative sample of files from the camera at the settings and formats you expect to use. Do not plan around a universal “photos per terabyte” figure: a count that might suit small JPEGs can be misleading for high-resolution RAW files.

Estimate video storage from bitrate and hours

Video settings can change storage needs sharply. Sony’s 4K guide gives examples at 60 Mbps and 100 Mbps. Using decimal units, those bitrates work out to about 27 GB and 45 GB per hour, respectively. These are calculations from the example bitrates, not promises about the exact size of every camera’s files; settings and file overhead can vary. See Sony Canada’s 4K Video Playback Guide.

Use this estimate for planned footage:

Estimated video storage (GB) = recording hours × bitrate (Mbps) × 0.45

For example, two hours at 60 Mbps is approximately 54 GB; two hours at 100 Mbps is approximately 90 GB. These figures cover the video estimate only, before photos, other files, backup history, and growth. If your camera records at a higher bitrate or uses a less-compressed format, allow more space.

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

Allow for backup history and growth

A backup can contain more than one current copy of a file. The space required depends on the backup method and how much history it retains, so add room for that history as well as expected growth in your libraries and folders. Microsoft notes that external drives can be useful when backing up large files or many files; its Windows backup guidance also distinguishes local drives from online storage choices.

For a Mac using Time Machine, Apple says the backup disk should ideally have at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity. Treat that as Apple’s starting guidance for Time Machine—not a universal formula for a photo archive, video project, or every backup workflow. Apple recommends using the Time Machine disk only for backups unless an advanced user creates separate APFS volumes. Read Apple’s current Time Machine guidance.

Keep backup, archive, and editing needs distinct

If the SSD will hold both backups and files you are actively editing, account for those uses separately. A working set sits alongside archived copies and backup history; folding them into one vague estimate can leave less usable room than expected. The right drive capacity follows from those measured needs, while the connection and drive performance must suit the editing workflow. There is no universal speed recommendation for every editing setup.

A portable SSD is a practical local-storage option. If your priority is an archive or backup capacity rather than SSD form factor, an external hard drive is another category to consider; the evidence here does not establish a universal speed or portability comparison. Whatever the device, keep another copy of important data. Sony recommends multiple backups for redundancy, and a lone portable drive is not redundancy. Sony discusses backup redundancy in its camera storage guidance.

Choose a backup location that fits your access needs

A portable drive gives you a local copy, not an off-site one. Microsoft says cloud backup can suit people who want files stored online and available across devices. An external or network drive may be a better fit when internet access is unavailable or files are large or numerous. These options address different needs; for valuable files, plan for more than one copy and consider where each copy is stored. Microsoft’s guide compares Windows backup choices.

A practical capacity-planning checklist

  1. Measure what exists: total the used size of all photo libraries, video folders, and other files to protect; include referenced images stored outside a Photos library.
  2. Estimate new footage: multiply planned recording hours by the camera’s bitrate, using the approximate formula above, and check your camera’s actual recording settings.
  3. Use real photo sizes: measure the collection or sample files in the formats you shoot, especially if you use RAW.
  4. Add backup history and growth: account for retained versions and how much new data you expect to add.
  5. Separate simultaneous uses: include both backup and editing files if the drive will serve both purposes, then make sure its connection and performance fit the work.
  6. Keep another copy: do not leave important files dependent on one portable SSD.
