A 500GB drive may suit ordinary documents and photos, according to Seagate, but video, games and editing projects can call for considerably more. Your own files—not a universal rule of thumb—are the best guide.
How to calculate the capacity you need
- Measure what you plan to store. Check the folders you will actually carry, including source footage, photo libraries, project files, exports and games you intend to keep installed. Use their current sizes rather than estimating from labels such as “4K” or “large game.”
- Estimate what you will add before offloading. Include the photos, footage, downloads or work files you expect to accumulate before you can move them elsewhere.
- Allow space for active work. Editing projects may include proxies, caches, exports and other assets alongside the original files. Reserve space for these and for growth rather than filling the drive to its advertised limit.
- Account for usable capacity. The full advertised capacity is not available for personal files; formatting and other functions use some space, as Kingston explains.
- Decide the drive’s role. A drive for active work, file transport or a backup has different demands. If it contains the only copy of important data, it is not a second backup copy.
Once you have a working total, compare it with drives that leave practical headroom. A 2TB portable SSD is one capacity to consider if your measured workload points there—not a default recommendation. Compare 1TB or 4TB options too if your files and expected growth suggest a smaller or larger drive.

How much space common files and workflows can take
Documents and photos
For ordinary documents and photos, Seagate says 500GB may be comfortable. That is an orientation point, not a guarantee: a large photo library or high-resolution originals can change the calculation. Measure your actual folders and allow for additions.

4K video: bitrate matters
Samsung estimates that one hour of 4K video at 100Mbps takes approximately 45GB. Its capacity guide cautions that recording time varies with camera settings and quality. Resolution alone does not determine file size; use your camera’s bitrate or the sizes of representative recordings when possible.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Video editing projects
Lexar estimates that a complete 4K editing project may require approximately three to four times the raw-footage size. This is a vendor planning estimate, not a rule for every setup. Count your own footage, project assets, exports, proxies and caches. Lexar also describes keeping active projects separate from recent completed work in its video-editing guidance.
Illustrative file counts are not promises
Kingston Technology’s 2019 chart estimates that 1TB could hold 12,800 uncompressed 24MP photos, 333,333 songs at 3MB each or 2,083 minutes of 4K video at 30Mbps. These are calculations based on the chart’s assumptions, not predictions for a particular person’s files; actual sizes vary. The chart is useful for seeing how strongly file size affects counts, but your measured library is a better estimate.

Games
Samsung illustrates game capacity using an assumed 100GB per game and notes that actual game sizes vary. Check the installed size of the titles you want to keep on the drive, including any updates or additional content relevant to your library, rather than treating the illustration as a fixed count.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- Connection compatibility: Check which port and connection your computer, phone or camera supports.
- Transfer speed: Make sure the drive’s actual performance is suitable for how you will use it, particularly if you work with large files.
- Durability and security: These may matter more for a drive that travels often or contains sensitive work. Check the specific model’s claims and requirements.
- Price per usable terabyte: Compare cost against the space available for files, not just advertised capacity.
- Backup plan: Keep another copy of important data; portability does not make a drive a backup by itself.
Samsung’s guide features its T9 Portable SSD as a product example, not as an independent comparison or a claim that it is the best drive for every reader. Use model-specific specifications to assess any drive you consider.
