How Much Phone Storage Do You Need? A Practical Guide

There is no one-size-fits-all phone storage capacity. Check what uses space now, project your habits, and account for video settings, downloads, and cloud storage.

How much phone storage do you need? It depends on what you keep on your phone: photos and videos, installed apps and games, offline downloads, and the room you want for future use. Check your current storage breakdown, then consider how your habits may change before you replace the phone. There is no universal capacity that suits every phone owner.

How to estimate the storage you need

1. Check what is using space now

On iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see available space, app usage, and any recommendations. On Android, open Settings > Storage; labels and categories can vary by device and Android version.

Look beyond the number of photos or app icons. Include camera media, apps and games, app documents and data, downloaded music or video, messaging attachments, and other files. Apple lists photos and videos, downloaded videos, files, and apps among common storage users. Google’s Android Help distinguishes storage, which holds data such as music and photos, from memory, which runs programs; manufacturers may use different labels. Google Android Help: Free up space

2. Project your use over the time you will keep the phone

Ask what you expect to keep locally until you replace the device. Occasional photos require a different plan from frequent long, high-resolution video. Consider whether you install several large games, save shows or music for travel, or regularly move original files to a computer or external drive. This is a planning framework, not a formula: file sizes vary with the phone, settings, app updates, and downloaded content.

3. Keep usable headroom

Do not plan to use every last byte. New captures, app data, downloads, and updates need room. Apple’s requirement to keep at least 10 percent of device storage free applies specifically to recording ProRes; it is not a universal reserve rule for all phones or uses. Photos and video can change the estimate most

Photos

Photo size varies with the camera, resolution, file format, and capture features. A fixed size-per-photo estimate is unreliable without specifying a device and setting. Motion or Live Photo features can also make a simple photo count misleading.

Video

Resolution, frame rate, duration, codec, and professional recording formats all affect how much space video uses. Apple says ProRes files are up to 30 times larger than HEVC files. That comparison comes from Apple’s ProRes guidance and should not be generalized to every video or phone. The same Apple guidance says at least 10 percent of device storage must be free to record ProRes. Apple Support: About Apple ProRes on iPhone

Some iPhone Pro workflows can record ProRes directly to an external USB-C drive. Apple lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro as compatible models in its guidance. For 4K60 ProRes, it specifies a drive with at least 220 MB/s write speed; for 4K120, at least 440 MB/s. These are model- and mode-specific requirements. An external drive can suit certain video workflows, but it is not built-in capacity for ordinary apps, games, or every camera workflow. Apple Support: About Apple ProRes on iPhone

Apps, games, and offline downloads need room too

An app’s storage footprint can include the app itself, installed assets, user documents, downloaded content, and cached data. Games may download substantial additional content, but there is no reliable universal game-size range to use in a capacity calculation. Check the storage-by-app screen on your phone, especially after installing game content or saving media for offline use.

If you need to reclaim room, iPhone can offload an unused app while retaining its documents and data. Android app archiving is available on supported configurations and can remove an unused app while preserving personal data. These options can help manage space, but they do not change how much local storage your phone has.

Cloud backup can reduce local copies, with trade-offs

Cloud photo services can reduce how many original media files remain on the device, but backup does not make local storage unlimited. The result depends on what is backed up, the service’s quality settings, available account space, connectivity, and whether you need files offline.

Apple says Optimize Storage can keep full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud while making more device space available. The amount freed depends on the library and how optimization applies; do not assume a specific amount. Apple Support: Manage your photo and video storage

Google Photos’ Storage saver has quality trade-offs: photos larger than 16 MP are resized to 16 MP, and videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p. Items backed up in Storage saver count toward Google Account storage, which is shared by Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail. Before deleting local originals, confirm the upload has finished and check the service’s backup quality setting. A cloud backup and a local copy are not the same thing: cloud access depends on the account, available storage, and connectivity.

Compare capacity options against your own habits

When choosing between the capacities offered for a particular phone, compare the factors that determine how much you will keep locally. Phone lineups and prices vary by market and change over time, so check the current model’s available tiers and price difference where you are buying.

What to compare Question to ask
Local media growth How much photo and video content will remain on the phone?
Capture quality and volume Do your resolution, frame-rate, and format choices create large files, especially ProRes?
Apps and downloads Which large apps, games, and offline media collections need to stay installed?
Cloud dependence Are you comfortable relying on online access and account storage limits, and do the backup settings preserve the quality you expect?
Workflow flexibility Does the exact phone model support recording or exporting to an external drive for your use case?
Price and replacement horizon What is the cost difference for a larger built-in tier, and how long do you expect to keep the phone?

If you keep a small local library and are comfortable relying on online backup, you may need less built-in space than someone who records lots of high-resolution video, keeps several large games installed, or stores media for offline use. The trade-off is between upfront capacity, file retention, reliance on cloud services, and how often you are willing to manage space.
