How much oil does the world use each day?
OPEC reports average world oil demand of 105.15 million barrels per day in 2025 in its 2026 Annual Statistical Bulletin announcement. “Per day” here is an annual average: it does not mean the same quantity was used every day or that demand is a live, constant rate.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) offers a related but different measure: its Global Energy Review 2026 says oil demand increased by 0.65 million barrels per day during 2025. That is the year-on-year change, not the total amount used. The two figures therefore should not be added or treated as competing measurements of the same quantity.

Demand is not the same as crude-oil production
Oil demand describes how much oil the world needs or uses; production describes supply. OPEC separately reports 2025 crude-oil production of 74.85 million barrels per day. That production figure is not a substitute for its 105.15 million-barrel-per-day demand estimate: the measures cover different things, including the distinction between crude oil and the broader oil demand figure.

What is the world’s oil used for?
Transport fuels
Transport fuels make up the largest share of oil-product demand, according to the IEA. Its Global Energy Review 2026 says: “In 2025, the growth of oil products for transport fuels – which accounted for the largest share of oil product demand – was largely steady.” Road fuels are a major part of this category, alongside fuels used in aviation and shipping.
Petrochemical feedstocks
Oil products are also used as raw materials in petrochemicals. The IEA identifies naphtha, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ethane as major feedstocks for plastics production and consumption. In this use, the oil product is not simply burned as a vehicle or aircraft fuel; it supplies material for manufacturing.

Other uses
Oil products serve additional purposes, but the cited public pages do not provide a complete set of 2025 global end-use percentages by sector. The IEA’s World Energy Statistics describes a detailed dataset covering four oil-demand flows and nine oil-product categories for the world, 156 countries and 33 regional aggregates, measured in thousands of barrels per day. Its World Energy Statistics and Oil Information pages describe the available data; their summaries do not establish a complete, freely presented 2025 sector-share breakdown.

Why a daily oil-use figure can change
A yearly average smooths out changes in demand during the year. Economic activity, fuel prices and disruptions to supply can all affect how much oil is demanded, so a dated forecast should not be mistaken for a historical average or a permanent rate.

In its September 2026 Oil Market Report, the IEA forecast a 2.5 million-barrel-per-day decline in world oil demand during 2026, amid disrupted flows and higher prices. This is a forecast made under exceptional market conditions, not a measured 2026 annual result. The IEA’s 2026 review also presents sector figures as changes in demand growth; those growth figures should not be read as the total share of oil consumed by each sector.
