How Much Memory Bandwidth Does Local LLM Generation Need?

Memory bandwidth can outweigh CPU core count for local LLM decode, but it is only one factor. Learn how capacity, GPU support and matched tests affect system choice.

For generating text with a local large language model, memory bandwidth can matter more than CPU core count: each decode step needs access to the model’s weights, and moving those weights can limit how quickly tokens are produced. It is not a universal rule for every AI task, nor a guarantee that a system with a higher bandwidth specification will be faster. Model fit, GPU capability and software support matter too.

Why bandwidth can matter during LLM generation

Text generation has a sequential decode phase: the model produces a token, then uses that result to produce the next one. During decode, active model weights must be read repeatedly. If moving data is the bottleneck, memory bandwidth—the rate at which memory can deliver data—can have more bearing on token-generation speed than the number of CPU cores.

That does not make CPU cores irrelevant. It means core count alone is a poor way to predict decode performance, particularly when inference uses a GPU or accelerator and the workload is limited by moving model data. The mechanism and its performance caveats are discussed in Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 local-AI comparison.

Capacity and bandwidth solve different problems

  • Memory capacity determines whether the model, its context and runtime data can fit in available memory without unwanted offloading. A larger capacity can make a larger model or longer context practical, but there is no universal model-size threshold: quantization, architecture, context length and runtime overhead all affect fit.
  • Memory bandwidth describes how quickly data can move once a workload is running. It can influence bandwidth-sensitive decode, but a published bandwidth figure is not a token-per-second result.

Apple lists memory capacity and bandwidth separately in its MacBook Pro specifications, Mac mini specifications and 2026 M6 and M5 Ultra announcement. They are distinct constraints, not interchangeable measures of speed.

What current specifications can—and cannot—tell you

These are vendor specifications or configurations described for a comparison system, not matched performance results. They illustrate that systems pair different amounts of memory and bandwidth; they do not establish which one generates tokens faster.

System or configuration Memory Rated bandwidth What the figure represents
MacBook Pro with M5 Max Up to 128GB unified memory Up to 614GB/s Apple’s listed configuration specifications: Apple
Mac mini with M6 Not stated in the cited specifications Up to 170GB/s Apple’s listed configuration specifications: Apple
Mac mini with M5 Pro Not stated in the cited specifications 307GB/s Apple’s listed configuration specifications: Apple
M5 Ultra Up to 512GB unified memory 1.2TB/s Apple’s announcement of August 25, 2026: Apple
M4 Max comparison system 128GB 546GB/s Tom’s Hardware test-system configuration: 16-core CPU and 40-core GPU; not a universal M4 Max performance claim. Tom’s Hardware
Nvidia GB10 comparison system 128GB unified memory 273GB/s Configuration listed in Tom’s Hardware’s comparison, not a universal platform specification. Tom’s Hardware
AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 comparison system 128GB unified memory 256GB/s Configuration listed in Tom’s Hardware’s comparison, not a universal platform specification. Tom’s Hardware

Apple’s figures are rated specifications, not independently measured throughput. Tom’s Hardware reports tests in its article, but the configurations above alone are not an apples-to-apples result. A bandwidth rating cannot be converted directly into tokens per second, and the comparison cautions that bandwidth is not a complete proxy for delivered performance.

Why the rest of the system changes the result

GPU and accelerator capability

Inference can depend on GPU compute, supported numerical formats and how well the model’s operations map to the accelerator. A high bandwidth rating cannot compensate automatically for weaker compute or an unsupported configuration. CPU core count is just one part of the system, not a complete measure of local-AI capability.

Memory architecture and framework support

On Apple Silicon, CPU and GPU can access the same unified memory pool. The MLX documentation explains that MLX arrays live in unified memory; Apple’s WWDC25 MLX session describes Metal GPU acceleration and CPU and GPU operations working on shared data. This is a software-and-architecture pairing, not evidence that every framework or model uses hardware equally well.

The task being run

The bandwidth argument is about autoregressive LLM decode, not all local AI. Prompt prefill, image generation, training and CPU-only inference can stress different parts of a machine. A conclusion drawn from token generation should not be generalized to those workloads without relevant tests.

How to compare systems for your own model

  1. Check capacity first. Confirm that the model, chosen quantization, context length and runtime fit in memory. If they do not, the system may offload data or fail to run the workload as intended.
  2. Check the accelerator and software path. Verify that your model and framework support the GPU or accelerator, the required precision and the operating system. A hardware specification is useful only if the software can use it.
  3. Treat bandwidth as a clue for decode. If your priority is generating tokens, compare bandwidth alongside capacity and GPU capability; do not use CPU core count or bandwidth in isolation.
  4. Compare measured results under matching conditions. Use the same model, quantization, prompt and context, runtime version, batch size and power conditions. Otherwise, a difference in reported speed may reflect a changed workload or software setup rather than the hardware attribute you are trying to compare.

What the evidence supports

The evidence supports a qualified conclusion: memory bandwidth can be a more useful predictor than CPU core count for bandwidth-sensitive LLM decode on suitable hardware with suitable software. It does not establish a universal winner across local AI, nor does it isolate bandwidth from GPU capability and framework behavior in every system. Apple’s Sri Santhanam, vice president of its Silicon Engineering Group, described the M6 and M5 Ultra as offering “more unified memory bandwidth” in an August 25, 2026 company announcement; that is Apple’s product statement, not an independent performance finding.
