That is Kingston’s June 2024 recommendation for maintenance and operating-system background operations, not a universal technical threshold. Samsung’s guidance shows why the right margin varies: drive size, workload and whether you mean ordinary free space or dedicated over-provisioning all matter.
The practical answer: use 10% as a buffer
For a typical Windows, macOS or Linux computer used for web browsing, office work, media and ordinary applications, keeping roughly one-tenth of the SSD empty is a sensible operating target. Kingston specifically recommends leaving a minimum of 10% free for general maintenance and operating-system background operations.

Think of 10% as a buffer rather than a line at which the drive suddenly becomes slow or unsafe. An SSD can continue working below that level, and some systems or workloads may run well with less. Conversely, a workstation that writes large files continuously may benefit from a larger margin. The available guidance does not establish one percentage that every SSD, operating system and user must follow.

Why an SSD needs unused capacity
NAND flash cannot overwrite an individual page in place in the same way a hard-disk drive can overwrite a magnetic sector. The controller writes new data to available pages and later consolidates valid pages while erasing whole blocks. That background process is commonly called garbage collection. The controller also performs wear leveling so that writes are distributed across the flash.
When the drive has plenty of available blocks, these operations can be scheduled more efficiently. Kingston describes available blocks as important for consistent performance, particularly during random writes. Samsung likewise explains that over-provisioning gives the controller room for garbage collection, which can help sustained performance and endurance.
This does not mean that freeing exactly 10% will produce a predictable speed increase on every consumer model. Controller design, NAND type, firmware, workload, temperature and the presence of a fast cache all influence results. The practical benefit of free space is that it gives the controller more room to manage writes; it is not a guaranteed benchmark result or a promise of a specific lifespan.

Free space and over-provisioning are not the same thing
Host-visible free space
Host free space is capacity you can see in File Explorer, Finder or a command such as df -h. You can fill it with applications and files, then free it again. When you leave it unused, the controller may be able to use that area dynamically during internal maintenance, depending on the drive’s design and firmware.

Dedicated over-provisioning
Over-provisioning (OP) is capacity reserved for the controller rather than presented for normal file storage. A manufacturer may reserve some flash at the factory, or an administrator may deliberately leave a portion of a new drive unpartitioned. That reserved area is not the same as simply having an empty folder or unused bytes inside a full partition.
Samsung’s white paper says there is no single “right” amount of OP. It recommends considering usage patterns and drive size. For smaller drives, it discusses setting aside about 6.7% to 10% of total drive space to reduce the risk of accidentally filling the drive. Those figures are Samsung’s published recommendations in an older white paper and refer to OP guidance, not a universal free-space rule for every SSD.
How workload and drive size change the target
| Situation | Practical approach | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| General consumer PC | Keep at least about 10% free | Kingston’s June 2024 recommendation for maintenance and operating-system background work. |
| Light client use on a large SSD | Monitor normal usage; extra dedicated OP may not be necessary | Samsung says light client users may not need to configure additional OP. This does not remove the value of avoiding an always-full partition. |
| Small SSD that is easy to fill | Protect roughly 6.7%–10% as reserved capacity or an equivalent safety margin | Samsung’s older white paper presents this as guidance for smaller drives, not an industry standard. |
| Heavy, sustained or random-write workload | Leave more than the basic consumer buffer when practical | More controller workspace can help demanding write patterns, but Samsung does not specify one universal percentage. |
| Drive regularly reaching 0% free | Relocate data or move to a larger SSD | A margin that disappears during normal work is not a usable margin, regardless of the nominal capacity. |
Examples of heavier workloads include scratch space for video or photo projects, virtual machines, databases, software builds and systems that record continuously. The relevant question is not only how much data is stored today, but how much temporary data the computer writes during its busiest periods.

Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Open File Explorer and select This PC. Each drive shows a capacity bar and the remaining space.
- For a category breakdown, open Settings > System > Storage. Select the SSD or a storage category to identify large files, applications and temporary data.
- Compare the free-space figure with approximately 10% of the drive’s displayed capacity. Check again after installing large games, editing projects or downloading system updates.
macOS
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
- Review the storage categories and recommendations, then remove or move data you no longer need on the internal SSD.
- Keep enough room for the system’s normal updates, caches and temporary working files rather than treating the displayed free number as permanently available.
Linux
- Open a terminal and run
df -hto see used and available space for mounted filesystems. - Identify the filesystem containing your home directory and system data; a separate data partition can fill even when the root filesystem still has room.
- Use your distribution’s storage-analysis tool or package manager to locate large files before deleting anything manually.
On any operating system, check the partition that actually hosts the workload. A computer can have free space on a second disk while the SSD containing the operating system is full.

What to do when the SSD is below the buffer
1. Find the largest, least-used data
Start with video files, game libraries, disk images, virtual-machine files, downloads and project exports. These often consume far more space than ordinary documents. Sort by size and last access date so that you can make deliberate decisions instead of deleting random system folders.
2. Move files that do not need to stay local
Kingston lists an external SSD, a network drive and cloud storage as options for large files that do not require direct local access. Keep an additional copy before deleting the original, and verify that the copy opens correctly. Cloud or network files may be unavailable when you are offline, so retain local copies of active projects and irreplaceable data.
3. Remove software and temporary data safely
Uninstall applications and games through the operating system or the application’s own uninstaller. Use built-in storage tools to clear temporary files, update remnants and recycle-bin contents. Avoid deleting unfamiliar folders inside system directories merely because they look large; the space recovered may be small, while the repair cost can be high.

5. Increase capacity when the pattern is permanent
If your ordinary library and working files routinely leave less than the buffer, use a larger SSD or place archives on another storage tier. Buying more capacity is not mandatory for every user, but it is the durable solution when deletion and relocation cannot keep pace with growth.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a nearly full SSD lose performance?
It can become harder for the controller to find convenient free blocks as user data approaches the drive’s limit, particularly during sustained or random writes. More internal copying and garbage collection may be required. The effect varies widely by model and workload, so a general percentage cannot predict a specific slowdown.
A nearly full SSD also leaves little room for operating-system updates, application caches, temporary exports and swap or virtual-memory activity. Those failures can appear before any obvious benchmark change: an update may refuse to install, an export may run out of space, or an application may report that it cannot create a temporary file.
Do not interpret the 10% recommendation as a guarantee that the drive will last longer, nor assume that crossing below it causes immediate damage. It is a maintenance margin intended to reduce avoidable pressure on the storage system.

Common misunderstandings
“Every SSD requires exactly 10%.”
No. Ten percent is Kingston’s practical consumer recommendation. Samsung’s guidance is workload- and capacity-sensitive, and explicitly rejects a single correct OP amount.
“An empty folder creates over-provisioning.”
No. An empty folder is still part of the user-visible filesystem. It may contribute to dynamic free space, but it is not the same as capacity permanently hidden from the host or left outside the partition.
“A 20% rule is required by the operating system.”
The cited guidance does not support presenting 20% as a universal operating-system requirement. Some demanding workloads may benefit from a larger margin, but the amount should follow actual write behavior and drive capacity.
“Free space alone fixes every SSD slowdown.”
No. Thermal throttling, firmware, a worn or faulty drive, interface limitations and a workload that exceeds the drive’s sustained-write design can all affect performance. Freeing space addresses one factor: the controller’s available workspace.
Quick Recap
A simple maintenance routine
- Check the SSD’s free capacity after major installations and media imports.
- Use approximately 10% free as the default consumer target.
- Watch the space consumed by temporary projects, virtual machines and continuous recording.
- Move infrequently accessed large files to external, network or cloud storage after verifying backups.
- Plan a larger SSD when your normal workload repeatedly consumes the buffer.
