There is no single wattage for every BLDC ceiling fan: power use varies by model and by the speed selected. To estimate energy use, multiply the fan’s wattage at that speed by its operating hours, then divide by 1,000. To estimate the cost, multiply the resulting kilowatt-hours (kWh) by your electricity rate. The official examples available here are not identified as BLDC models, so they illustrate how fan readings can differ but cannot establish a typical BLDC wattage.
What the wattage tells you—and what it does not
Watts (W) measure the rate at which a fan uses electrical power at a particular moment. A fan’s wattage is not necessarily the same at every speed: low, medium and high settings can draw different amounts. A separate standby figure may apply when the fan is switched off but remains connected to power and able to receive a remote or control signal.

Energy use adds time to the measurement. Electricity bills generally charge for energy in kilowatt-hours, not for watts by themselves. One kilowatt is 1,000 watts, so a fan drawing 30 W for one hour uses 0.03 kWh. That result describes energy for the stated hour at the stated draw; it does not mean the fan always draws 30 W or that every fan uses that amount.
For a BLDC fan, use the wattage in the documentation for the exact model and operating speed whenever it is available. The motor type matters: a number published for an unspecified ceiling fan cannot be treated as a BLDC-specific figure. Neither the ENERGY STAR examples below nor ENERGY STAR certification alone establishes that a product has a BLDC motor.

What published model figures show
ENERGY STAR product records report distinct low-speed, high-speed and standby readings for individual certified fans. They are useful illustrations of variation, not a representative sample or a controlled comparison of BLDC fans.
| ENERGY STAR-listed model | Fan size | Low speed | High speed | Standby | Record certification year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visual Comfort & Co LAUNCETON 44 | 44 inches | 1.9 W | 29.8 W | 0.7 W | 2025 |
| Monte Carlo Jovie 58 | 58 inches | 3.4 W | 17.6 W | 1.1 W | 2022 |
These readings show why one wattage cannot describe a whole fan. In the LAUNCETON 44 record, the high-speed figure is much greater than the low-speed figure; the Jovie 58 record also has different low- and high-speed readings, with a separate standby value. The figures belong to the listed models and their records. They do not establish the draw of another fan, a BLDC fan generally, or a fan operating at an unreported speed.
The two entries also differ in fan size, model and certification year. They are not a like-for-like test, so they should not be used to conclude that one size or model type is inherently more efficient. The retrieved records do not establish whether those figures include an attached light kit. Check the product documentation for what is included before comparing a fan with a light kit to one without.

Calculate energy use from your fan’s rating
Use the simple calculation below for a period of steady operation:
Energy (kWh) = power (W) × operating time (hours) ÷ 1,000
- Find the relevant wattage. Use the figure for the speed you intend to run, from the manual, product specification or label for the exact fan. Do not substitute a maximum-speed rating if you usually use a lower speed.
- Choose the operating period. Use hours for the interval you want to estimate—for example, the hours in a day or a billing period. If the fan runs at different speeds for different amounts of time, calculate each interval separately.
- Multiply watts by hours and divide by 1,000. The answer is energy in kWh for that interval.
- For a cost estimate, multiply kWh by your tariff. Use the per-kWh rate on your own bill. Rates, taxes and billing structures differ by location and provider, so a wattage figure alone cannot determine a bill.
Worked example using the listed 44-inch fan
For illustration only, if the ENERGY STAR-listed Visual Comfort & Co LAUNCETON 44 drew its reported 29.8 W high-speed amount for 8 hours, the calculation would be 29.8 × 8 ÷ 1,000 = 0.2384 kWh. This is arithmetic applied to that model’s reported high-speed figure; it is not a claim about a BLDC fan or an expected reading for another product.

If the same record’s 1.9 W low-speed figure applied for 8 hours, the calculation would be 1.9 × 8 ÷ 1,000 = 0.0152 kWh. The contrast comes from using two different speed readings. Your own result depends on the rating and runtime of your fan.

Break the schedule into intervals instead of applying one speed’s wattage to all operating hours. For example, if you have a documented wattage for each setting, calculate energy for the time at each setting, then add those kWh figures. This is more accurate than treating the maximum rating as continuous draw when the fan spends some time at lower settings.
If the specification gives only a maximum wattage and you do not know the draw at your usual setting, a calculation based on that maximum is an upper-setting estimate, not a measurement of ordinary use. A watt meter or manufacturer documentation may provide a more suitable figure for your actual operating conditions.

Include standby only for idle standby hours
Some product records list standby consumption separately from running wattage. Include that figure only for the time the fan is idle while still in standby; do not add it to the operating wattage for hours when the fan is running. For example, applying the LAUNCETON 44 record’s 0.7 W standby figure to 16 idle standby hours gives 0.7 × 16 ÷ 1,000 = 0.0112 kWh for that period.
Whether a particular installation consumes standby power, and how much, depends on its controls and product design. Check the exact fan documentation for a standby rating rather than assuming one. If you disconnect power while the fan is off, standby energy does not apply during that disconnected time.
Compare efficiency, not watts alone
A lower wattage does not by itself show that a fan is the better choice. Fans can move different amounts of air, and a useful comparison considers airflow alongside electrical draw. ENERGY STAR defines ceiling-fan efficiency as “a weighted efficiency metric based on the ceiling fan performance at multiple speeds and in stand-by mode, expressed in cubic feet per minute per watt (CFM/W).” In plain terms, CFM/W relates airflow to power and accounts for performance across more than one speed and standby mode.

ENERGY STAR’s ceiling-fan criteria also vary minimum efficiency thresholds by fan type and size. That means a single threshold should not be assumed to apply to every fan category. When comparing candidate models, check their airflow and efficiency information as well as wattage, and compare equivalent sizes and operating conditions where possible. The specification for residential ceiling fans, Version 4.1, was finalized on August 1, 2023.
- Compare low-speed wattage with low-speed wattage, and high-speed with high-speed—not a low-speed figure for one model against another model’s high-speed figure.
- Keep standby readings separate from running readings.
- Check whether an included light kit is part of the reported draw before comparing products.
- Consider airflow and the CFM/W efficiency metric, not just the smallest watt number.
- Verify that the product documentation identifies the motor as BLDC if you need a BLDC-specific answer.
How to get a useful estimate for your own fan
Start with the make and exact model number, then find the product manual or specification sheet. Look for power consumption in watts by speed, any standby rating, and whether figures cover the fan alone or an included light kit. Confirm that the documentation describes the same motor type and configuration as the product you own.
Record how many hours the fan operates at each speed over the period you care about. Apply the kWh formula to each speed interval, add the results, and add standby energy only for idle hours when standby is active and its draw is known. Finally, multiply total kWh by the per-kWh rate on your bill for an energy-cost estimate. This estimates the electricity charge associated with the calculated energy; your bill may also include other charges that are not determined by fan wattage.
If the manufacturer gives no speed-specific data, do not infer a BLDC-wide number from another fan’s listing. You can ask the manufacturer for power use at the settings you use, or measure the fan in its actual setup with a suitable electricity meter. A measurement is specific to that fan, setting and test conditions; it does not create a universal figure for BLDC fans.
