How Much Does Unified Memory Help Run Large AI Models Locally?

Unified memory can help a large local AI model fit by sharing physical memory between CPU and GPU, but speed still depends on bandwidth, compute, software and quantization.

Unified memory can make the difference between a large AI model fitting on a computer and not fitting at all. It does not, by itself, guarantee faster generation. On Apple silicon, the CPU and GPU share physical memory; in Apple’s MLX framework, arrays can be used on either processor without copying them between separate CPU and GPU memory pools. For practical speed, memory bandwidth, compute, model quantization, context size and the inference software matter too.

What unified memory changes

In a system with separate CPU memory and GPU video memory, each pool has its own capacity. Unified memory instead gives the CPU and GPU access to the same physical memory. That can let an Apple silicon system use more of its memory for a model than a discrete GPU with a smaller, separate VRAM pool could use for that same model.

There is also a data-movement benefit in MLX, Apple’s machine-learning framework for Apple silicon: its arrays live in unified memory, so operations can run on the CPU or GPU without transferring those arrays between separate memory pools. This describes MLX specifically; it should not be assumed for every local-inference framework or computer architecture. Apple explains the design in its WWDC25 MLX session.

How much memory a large model can require

Model weights are only part of the memory needed while generating text, but they provide a useful baseline for understanding why capacity matters. In a WWDC25 demonstration, Apple ran a 670-billion-parameter model quantized to 4.5 bits per weight on an M3 Ultra system with 512 GB of unified memory. Apple estimated that the weights alone required around 380 GB. That is one demonstration, not a general recommendation for a Mac configuration or a statement about current retail availability. See Apple’s session on large language models on Apple silicon with MLX.

The phrase “weights alone” is critical. A running model also needs memory for runtime allocations and the context or KV cache; the operating system and other open applications use memory as well. Apple’s cited example does not quantify those additional requirements, so the 380 GB figure should not be treated as the total memory needed to run that model in every workload.

Does unified memory make local AI faster?

Not automatically. Sharing memory can avoid copies between distinct CPU and GPU pools in MLX, but a large model’s generation speed also depends on how quickly data can move through memory and how much compute the hardware can deliver. Apple’s own guidance is that “Large models need lots of memory and lots of memory bandwidth to be fast.” The WWDC25 architecture session explains this distinction.

There is no universal percentage speedup established by Apple’s cited material for unified memory versus a discrete-GPU system. Nor does a larger advertised unified-memory capacity alone establish that one machine will generate more tokens per second than another. A meaningful comparison needs the same model, quantization, context and software path, along with relevant bandwidth and compute specifications.

How quantization affects the tradeoff

Quantization stores model weights at lower numerical precision, reducing the memory used by those weights. Apple says lower precision can also increase generated tokens per second. The tradeoff is that output quality can vary with the model and quantization method; the cited guidance does not establish that all quantized versions preserve identical quality.

That makes capacity and quantization a joint decision: a smaller representation may make a model fit where it otherwise would not, while also changing speed and potentially quality. Consider the intended model’s accuracy needs and latency requirements rather than treating the smallest possible weight footprint as the only goal.

What to compare when choosing a system

Do not compare a Mac’s advertised unified-memory capacity directly with a discrete GPU’s VRAM as if they were interchangeable measures of performance. They describe different architectures, and Apple’s materials do not provide a controlled cross-platform benchmark. Instead, evaluate the whole workload:

Windows 11 Pro, performance-mode switching, Wake-on-LAN and auto power-on support flexible workstation use.
  • Usable capacity: allow for quantized weights, runtime allocations, the intended context and other applications to occupy memory at the same time.
  • Memory bandwidth and compute: capacity determines what may fit; bandwidth and processing capability affect how quickly the model can run.
  • Inference software: check that the framework supports the model and makes effective use of the target hardware. MLX’s unified-memory behavior is specific to its Apple silicon path.
  • Quantization and quality: weigh lower memory use and potential speed gains against the output quality required for the task.
  • Storage and workload: model files need storage, but storage capacity is separate from working memory. An external SSD can hold model files; it does not add memory for GPU inference.

Apple’s machine-learning deployment guidance recommends considering storage, memory and compute together, in light of model size, accuracy and latency needs.
