For a single 24/7 YouTube stream, budget for the VPS plus outbound data transfer—not just the advertised server price. DigitalOcean’s listed Basic Droplet examples start at $6 per month for 1 vCPU, 1 GiB RAM, 25 GiB SSD and 1,000 GiB of included transfer. At YouTube’s recommended 6 Mbps for 720p30, a constant stream sends about 1,944 decimal GB (roughly 1,810 GiB) in 30 days before overhead, so that allowance is not enough if all stream traffic counts toward it. A $12 example includes 2,000 GiB and may fit 6 Mbps with limited headroom; a 10 Mbps 1080p30 stream sends about 3,240 GB (roughly 3,017 GiB) and needs more transfer or overage budget. These are illustrative plan calculations, not a guarantee of total cost or encoding performance.
What makes up the monthly cost?
The bill has at least two parts: the VPS plan and the outbound data sent from it to YouTube. The listed server price gives you compute, disk and a transfer allowance; it does not establish whether the machine can encode your particular video reliably. Your actual total can also depend on region, taxes, backups, extra storage, the number of streams and transfer overage.

| Monthly price | CPU | Memory | SSD | Included transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $4 | 1 vCPU | 512 MiB | 10 GiB | 500 GiB |
| $6 | 1 vCPU | 1 GiB | 25 GiB | 1,000 GiB |
| $12 | 1 vCPU | 2 GiB | 50 GiB | 2,000 GiB |
DigitalOcean says included transfer is pooled at team level, inbound Droplet transfer is free, and extra outbound transfer costs $0.01/GiB. The overage rate was last verified September 14, 2026. Weekly backups, if enabled, cost 20% of the Droplet price. A historical Hetzner comparison
Hetzner’s June 6, 2024 announcement listed the CX22 at 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB disk and 20 TB traffic for €3.79 per month excluding VAT. That is a historical announced price, not a current quote. How much bandwidth does a 24/7 stream use?
For a constant bitrate, a useful estimate is bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 = decimal GB per day; multiply by the number of days in the billing period. These 30-day totals exclude protocol overhead and assume the stream sustains the stated bitrate throughout.

Rank #2
| Bitrate | Approx. data per day | Approx. data per 30 days | Approx. 30-day usage in GiB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 Mbps | 43.2 GB | 1,296 GB | about 1,207 GiB |
| 6 Mbps | 64.8 GB | 1,944 GB | about 1,810 GiB |
| 10 Mbps | 108 GB | 3,240 GB | about 3,017 GiB |
The conversion from decimal GB to GiB is approximate; divide by about 1.074. Actual traffic can vary with bitrate, protocol overhead and stream interruptions. Measure actual usage in the provider’s billing dashboard rather than treating the estimate as a billing guarantee.
Relate transfer to YouTube quality settings
YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends H.264 and constant bitrate. Its representative recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p30, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60; the published ranges are 3–8 Mbps for 720p30 and 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not VPS CPU requirements. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream-health guidance.
Rank #3
At the recommended 6 Mbps, a 1,000 GiB allowance is below the approximate 1,810 GiB monthly stream volume. A 2,000 GiB allowance is a plausible fit but leaves limited room for overhead or bitrate variation. At 10 Mbps, the approximate 3,017 GiB volume is above the 2,000 GiB example allowance. At DigitalOcean’s stated $0.01/GiB overage rate, the extra transfer is billed on measured excess; alternatively choose a plan with more included transfer. Do not infer an exact bill from this estimate alone.
Does the VPS need to encode the video?
Compute cost depends on what runs on the server. If FFmpeg encodes source media in real time, CPU and memory demand depend on the codec, resolution, frame rate, preset and source. If the VPS only relays an already encoded stream, its compute workload can differ substantially, although outbound transfer remains a major cost. Neither YouTube’s bitrate table nor the example plan specifications establish a universal CPU or RAM minimum for continuous encoding.

Size the machine for the actual workload and run a sustained test using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and media before relying on it. Watch CPU, memory, dropped frames and YouTube’s stream-health indicators during that test. For multiple simultaneous streams, calculate transfer and validate compute for the aggregate workload rather than extrapolating one-stream examples blindly.
What automatic restart monitoring does—and does not—cover
A restart policy can bring an encoder process back after it exits or restart it after a server reboot. That is only one layer of recovery. A process can remain running while the input is broken or the feed reaching YouTube is unhealthy, so host/process monitoring and YouTube stream-health checks are separate requirements.

- Start at boot and restart a failed process. Configure the operating system’s service manager or a container restart policy to start the encoder after boot and restart it after process failure.
- Monitor the host and process. Check that the VPS is reachable and the encoder is running; configure alerts for failures so a restart loop does not go unnoticed.
- Check the actual broadcast. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and test before going live. A live process alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP, for transmission to its ingest service. Restarting cannot repair a bad input file, exhausted transfer allowance, invalid stream key, provider outage or YouTube ingest/platform issue. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular VPS supervisor or monitoring vendor.
How to estimate your own VPS bill
- Choose the stream mode. Decide whether the VPS will encode source video or relay an already encoded feed; test the intended workload before settling on a machine size.
- Set a bitrate target. Use YouTube’s guidance for the resolution and frame rate, then use the actual sustained encoder bitrate in your transfer calculation.
- Estimate monthly transfer. Multiply Mbps by 10.8 for approximate decimal GB per day, then multiply by the number of days. Convert to GiB when comparing with a provider’s allowance.
- Compare plan allowance with usage. Include room for overhead and bitrate variation. If expected traffic exceeds the allowance, compare the provider’s overage rate with a plan that includes more transfer.
- Add the costs that apply to you. Check region and currency, tax, backups, extra storage, other streams and any separate monitoring service. Confirm whether the transfer limit is pooled and how the provider measures billable traffic.
Managed cloud alternative: StreamNeo
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live 24/7. StreamNeo is #1 as the no-server-administration option here: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free without a card. It does not stream from a camera.
To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. The cloud handles looping and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot includes 10 GB storage pooled across active slots, one always-on stream, playlists and support; every plan has the same product, with billing lengths from a day to a year. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
StreamNeo is a convenience alternative, not a directly priced VPS equivalent: the VPS route gives you server control but requires you to configure and monitor the system, while a managed service bundles the looping workflow. Compare the current service terms and the VPS’s transfer, tax and backup costs against your needs.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your uploaded quality streams up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
