There is no dependable one-price answer: the cost to replace a computer hard drive depends on the exact computer, compatible storage part, country, service provider and what the job includes. Get an itemized quote for your model and location rather than treating another model’s estimate as a universal price.
Why hard-drive replacement has no single standard price
A quote can combine several distinct jobs: diagnosing the computer, supplying a compatible drive, installing it, setting up an operating system, and transferring files. Data recovery from a failing or failed drive is a separate service, not an automatic part of installing a replacement.

Manufacturer service routes also differ by device and country. Microsoft says out-of-warranty offers vary by product and location and that pricing can change. Apple says it must inspect a Mac to provide a personalized estimate. Neither provides a single price that applies to every computer. What determines your quote
Computer model and compatible drive
The replacement part must match the computer’s storage interface, physical format and supported capacity. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is a possible replacement only when the computer accepts that size and interface. Some computers use other formats, and some have storage that is not user-replaceable. Check the exact model’s specifications and repair instructions before buying anything.

Warranty, country and parts availability
Check warranty or service-plan coverage before paying for an out-of-warranty repair. The available service route can depend on the product, location and parts availability. Apple notes that out-of-warranty estimates in Ireland are subject to VAT and that service options depend on location and parts availability; Microsoft likewise says offers and pricing vary by country and device. Apple’s Ireland repair page and Microsoft’s service page describe these limits.
Diagnosis and work included
Ask whether diagnosis is charged separately and whether the quoted amount includes the drive, labor, operating-system installation, file transfer, taxes and any warranty on the repair. Providers set their own terms, so do not assume an advertised repair figure includes every step needed to return a computer to use.

Data recovery
If files on the old drive matter, ask about recovery before authorizing replacement or disposal of that drive. Installing a new drive does not restore files from the old one. Apple states that data-recovery attempts are not covered by the Apple Limited Warranty or an AppleCare plan. Its guidance names recovery companies but says they are not Apple Authorized Service Providers and Apple does not warrant their services; that is Apple’s guidance, not a universal endorsement. Compare service routes before choosing

How to get a useful itemized estimate
- Identify the computer. Record its brand, exact model and, if available, serial number. Check warranty or service-plan status.
- Describe the fault. Tell the provider what the computer does and whether files on the drive need to be preserved or recovered.
- Request separate line items. Ask for diagnosis, replacement drive, installation, operating-system setup, cloning or file transfer, taxes, and any recovery attempt to be itemized.
- Confirm the part and scope. Ask which drive will be installed, whether it is compatible with your model, what work is included, and whether the old drive will be returned.
- Compare the final terms. Check total cost, turnaround, repair warranty, data-handling policy and what happens if inspection finds a different fault. Apple notes that inspection is needed for a personalized Mac estimate, so an initial figure may not be final.
Replacement, migration and recovery are different
- Replacement puts compatible storage in the computer; it does not by itself provide your old files.
- Operating-system setup prepares the computer to boot from the new drive and may be quoted separately.
- Cloning or file migration transfers accessible data from the old drive; whether this is feasible depends on its condition and the provider’s service.
- Data recovery is a separate attempt to retrieve files from a failing or failed drive. Ask about its cost and risks before authorizing work; recovery is not guaranteed.
