For a useful estimate, add those costs over the same period and divide by the number of drinks. Published examples put a UK two-espressos-a-day scenario at £972 over five years, while a separate France-based calculation estimates €0.28 per cup for an automatic bean machine. They use different assumptions and should not be treated as directly comparable.
What does ownership cost include?
A machine’s sticker price is only the starting point. A practical total for a chosen ownership period is:

Your actual costs also depend on local prices, water conditions and your machine’s care requirements.

Published cost examples—and what they assume
| Example | Reported cost | Basis and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| UK bean-to-cup ownership | £972 over five years | Which? gathered data on 17 October 2025. Its estimate assumes two espressos a day and includes the upfront cost of its cheapest Best Buy coffee machine. This is a UK comparison, not a universal price. Which? |
| UK tested-machine price | About £864 average | Which? reports this as the average price of bean-to-cup models it tested; it is not an average for every machine on sale. Which? |
| France automatic bean-machine scenario | €0.28 per cup; €206 per year | Brewmance’s 2026 model assumes two cups daily (730 a year), a five-year depreciation period, an 8 g espresso dose, €0.015 energy per cup and €20 annual maintenance. Its model uses its own France catalog prices, described as August 2026 prices. Brewmance |
| France premium bean-machine scenario | €0.78 per cup; €571 per year | Brewmance’s 2026 calculation uses a €949 Jura machine and coffee priced at €60/kg. It is one publisher’s scenario, not a market-wide premium-machine average. Brewmance |
The UK and France figures use different currencies, methods and assumptions, so they do not establish which country or machine type is inherently cheaper. Within Which?’s UK comparison, the same two-espressos-a-day, five-year basis gives £802 for ground-coffee espresso machines and £1,118 for pod machines, alongside £972 for bean-to-cup ownership. Which?
How to estimate your own cost
- Choose a period and drink count. For example, model one year or five years and state the number of drinks you expect to make. Two drinks daily means 730 drinks in a 365-day year.
- Enter the machine price. If you want a per-cup estimate that includes the machine, spread its purchase price across your chosen period. State the lifespan assumption instead of presenting it as certain.
- Calculate coffee from your recipe. Multiply the dose per drink by your number of drinks, then apply the price per gram or kilogram of the beans you actually buy. Brewmance’s France scenario uses 8 g per espresso and calculates €0.14 coffee per cup from its stated catalog prices; bean prices and doses vary. Brewmance
- Add milk if you make milk drinks. Include the amount used per recipe and your local milk price. The cited examples do not establish a universal milk allowance.
- Add energy and upkeep. Use local electricity prices and the care products and schedule specified for your chosen model. Account for filters, descaler, cleaning tablets and any expected replacement parts or repairs rather than assuming every machine has the same requirements.
- Divide by the drinks in the model. That gives a per-drink estimate for your assumptions. Change the volume, recipe or machine tier to see how the result shifts.

Gaggia Naviglio
Gaggia says the Naviglio has a removable brew group and automatic coffee-circuit cleaning. Its guidance says to descale when the display prompts, recommends Gaggia descaler, warns against vinegar and other descaling agents, and identifies compatibility with Brita/Mavea Intenza+ filters. Those instructions apply to the named Naviglio range, not to bean-to-cup machines generally. Gaggia Naviglio maintenance FAQ

Philips LatteGo 4400
TechRadar’s review of the Philips LatteGo 4400 reports that its AquaClean filter reaches its stated capacity after 95 litres (about 625 coffees), with replacement filters priced at $20 / £12 / AU$29 at the time of the review. The reviewer estimates that eight filters could delay descaling for 5,000 coffees; without filters, the machine could require up to ten descaling cycles, depending on water hardness. These are review-reported figures for that specific model, not current price quotes or a schedule to apply to other machines. The review also notes that cleaning tablets and descaling solution were not supplied with the reviewed machine. TechRadar review

How to make a fair comparison
When comparing bean-to-cup machines with pods, ground-coffee machines or café purchases, use the same number of drinks and the same period. Include the same categories on both sides where they apply: machine cost, coffee, milk, electricity and upkeep. A comparison that excludes depreciation or filters on one side but includes them on the other can give a misleading result.
- Use prices from the same country and time period.
- Match the drink recipe and serving size, including milk-based drinks.
- Show the bean dose and price assumption.
- State whether depreciation, energy, filters, cleaning products and repairs are included.
Which?’s UK figures provide a same-scenario comparison with ground-coffee espresso and pod machines. Brewmance provides a separate France-based model. Their different geographies and assumptions make each useful as an illustration, but not as a single combined benchmark. Which? Brewmance
