There is no fixed price to add Gemini AI to a game. The Gemini API charges for usage according to the model, input and output volume, modality, and any optional tools the game uses. Building and operating the feature also takes project-specific engineering and infrastructure work, which is not included in Google’s API rates.
As listed on Google AI for Developers’ pricing page when checked in 2026, standard Gemini 2.5 Flash rates include $0.30 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output tokens. Standard Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite rates include $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.40 per million output tokens. These are model-specific vendor prices, not a universal rate for Gemini or a quote for a game. Check the current pricing page for the model and billing mode you plan to use.

What the API rates do—and do not—cover
The API price is a variable usage cost, not a per-game integration fee. A game that sends many long prompts and requests detailed responses can use more billable tokens than one that makes fewer, shorter calls. Rates also differ across models and service modes, and audio and other modalities may have their own rates.
The API price does not quote the work required to add the feature to a game. Depending on the project, a developer may need to design and implement the game-to-API connection, manage credentials, handle responses and errors, test behavior, and operate the feature after release. Hosting, moderation, reliability work, and ongoing operations may also affect the project budget. Their cost depends on the game and its implementation; the published API rates do not establish a standard development price or timeline.

It is therefore useful to keep two budgets separate: the recurring cost of API usage and the project’s implementation and operating costs. The first can be estimated from expected traffic and the applicable rates. The second requires a project-specific scope.
Example standard rates for two text-capable models
The following figures are the standard rates listed on Google AI for Developers’ pricing page when checked in 2026. They are examples for the named models, not a promise that other models, billing modes, or future pricing will match.

Input and output are priced separately. A prompt’s input can include the instructions sent with the request, player text, and any context supplied to the model. Output is the response generated by the model. For a game, dialogue, summaries, or other generated content can make the output side significant, while repeated instructions or conversation context can contribute to input use.

How to estimate a game’s monthly API usage
A useful estimate starts with the feature’s behavior, not an invented price per player. Define the workload first, then apply the rate table for the model and billing mode you expect to use.
- Choose the feature and API mode. Decide whether players will use text interactions, real-time voice, or another modality. Select a candidate model that can deliver the required behavior, and check the rate category that applies to it.
- Estimate one interaction. Record the average input and output token amounts for a typical call. Include system instructions, player input, any game state or history sent to the model, and the expected response. For audio or other modalities, estimate usage using the applicable modality-specific pricing instead of treating it as ordinary text.
- Count calls per player or session. Estimate how often the feature will call Gemini during a play session. A single in-game action may require one or several calls, depending on the design. Use the intended interaction flow rather than assuming every player makes the same number of requests.
- Estimate monthly traffic. Multiply the expected number of sessions by the average interactions per session. If you forecast active players instead, also estimate how many sessions each player has during the month.
- Account for repeated context and retries. Include conversation history and instructions each time they are sent, along with requests that may be retried. A prompt that seems small when viewed once can contribute substantially if the same context is included repeatedly.
- Add optional tool usage. Include grounding or other tools only if the game will use them. For Google Search grounding, a customer-submitted request can result in one or more individually charged Search queries; count those queries rather than assuming one charge per player request.
- Compare the estimate with the applicable free tier. Check the free-tier models and limits for the project. If expected use exceeds what is available or the feature needs paid-tier access, calculate the paid portion using the current applicable rates.
For a text-based feature, a conceptual estimate is:
monthly API charge ≈ input usage × input rate + output usage × output rate + applicable modality and tool charges

What a per-player estimate needs
There is no defensible per-player figure without assumptions about how often the feature is used and what each request contains. To derive one for a particular game, divide the forecast monthly API usage by the forecast number of players for the same period. Make clear whether the denominator is all players, active players, or players who actually use the AI feature. Those populations can produce very different per-player averages.
For example, a player who never opens an AI dialogue feature should not be treated as if they made the same number of calls as a player who uses it throughout a session. If usage varies widely, an average alone may hide high-use sessions. Model a typical workload and a heavier-use case separately, using measured or explicitly estimated token counts and call frequency. Do not present either as a general Gemini price per player.
Why real-time voice needs a different estimate
Voice features using the Gemini Live API should not be budgeted by counting only player turns. Google’s Live API best-practices page states: “The Gemini Live API bills strictly by token usage.” It also explains that conversation history is reprocessed as a session lengthens, which can make the cost per turn rise over the course of a session.

For a Live feature, the estimate needs to reflect the session’s duration and the usage associated with the conversation as it grows. A simple calculation based only on a fixed price per turn may miss the additional token usage from repeated history. Use the Live API’s applicable token pricing and the expected pattern of session use; do not substitute the standard text rates in the table above for a Live estimate.

Free tier, paid tier, and project billing
Google lists free tiers for some models, subject to applicable limits. Its billing documentation says new accounts begin on the Free Tier for certain models and within free-tier rate limits. Moving a project to the Paid Tier involves setting up Cloud Billing. The documentation also says that use of AI Studio remains free unless a paid API key is linked for paid features.
Free access can be useful for prototyping or for eligible usage within the relevant limits, but it does not guarantee that production traffic will cost nothing. Whether a free tier is adequate depends on the model, the project’s limits, and the game’s workload. Check the current eligibility and limits for the account and model you intend to use before treating free usage as part of a production budget.

Some features may use tools in addition to model input and output. The official pricing table lists Google Search and Maps grounding charges for relevant models and tiers. These charges belong in an estimate only when the game’s implementation actually uses the corresponding tool.
Google’s pricing note says a customer-submitted request may lead to one or more Google Search queries and that each individual query is charged. The number of billable queries therefore may not equal the number of player requests. If grounding is part of the feature, estimate likely queries per request and check the applicable tool pricing. If it is not part of the design, leave that charge out rather than adding a generic allowance.
How to choose a model without guessing at the cheapest option
A lower rate per token does not by itself establish the lowest cost for a game. The feature must still meet its quality, latency, and capability needs, and its workload may differ by model or mode. Compare likely costs using the same representative interaction and traffic assumptions, then assess whether each candidate produces an acceptable result.
- Capability and quality: Identify what the in-game feature must do, such as respond to player text or support a particular interaction. The available rates do not prove how well a model will perform for a specific game.
- Input and output volume: Use the prompt, context, and response sizes expected in the implementation. Input and output rates are separate, so estimate both sides.
- Modality and service mode: Apply the relevant rates for text, audio, or another supported modality and for the intended API mode. Live voice, in particular, needs its own token-based estimate.
- Usage pattern: Compare interactions per session, monthly sessions, repeated context, and any retries. These assumptions drive the quantity multiplied by the rates.
- Free-tier fit and tools: Check whether the project can use the desired model within free-tier limits, and account for tools only if the game needs them.
The official pricing information provides rates, not a benchmark for a particular game’s prompts or traffic. A claim that one model will be cheapest for every game would ignore both the feature requirements and the workload.
Common budgeting mistakes
- Calling the API rate the total cost of integration. It covers usage charges, not the project-specific work of building and operating the feature.
- Multiplying by player count alone. Player count does not tell you how many sessions, calls, or tokens the feature will generate. Estimate usage behavior as well.
- Counting only the player’s text. Include instructions and context sent with a request, as well as model-generated output.
- Assuming context is sent only once. If the implementation resends history or instructions on each call, include that repeated input in the estimate.
- Using a standard text rate for Live voice or another modality. Match the estimate to the model, mode, and modality actually used.
- Treating a free tier as unlimited production capacity. Free access applies to eligible models and usage within the relevant limits; confirm those limits for the project.
- Counting a grounded request as one Search query. A customer request may produce multiple individually charged queries, so estimate the tool usage rather than assuming a one-to-one relationship.
- Using an old price as a permanent rate. Prices are vendor rates that can change. Recheck Google’s current pricing for the selected model and billing mode when preparing a budget.
What to put in a defensible budget
Before committing to a monthly figure, write down the assumptions that produce it. At a minimum, record the model and API mode, the expected input and output per interaction, calls per session, sessions per month, and any modality or tool usage. Note whether the figures include repeated history and retries, and whether the calculation assumes Free Tier or paid usage.
Then keep the estimate distinct from implementation costs. The API forecast can be updated when measured usage is available; the engineering and operations budget should be scoped for the actual feature, integration, and reliability requirements. If the expected traffic or prompt design is unknown, the honest result is a range based on stated scenarios, not a single unsupported monthly total.
