How Much Does Internet Upload Data Cost for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

There is no universal internet charge for uploading a 24/7 YouTube stream. The stream’s bitrate determines roughly how much data it sends; your ISP’s data allowance and billing rules determine whether that use costs extra. At a steady 1 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 324 GB (decimal), or about 302 GiB, before network overhead. Multiply your total stream bitrate in Mbps by 324 to estimate a 30-day total, then compare it with your plan’s included data and overage terms.

Estimate the data your stream uploads

Use the encoder’s total bitrate, including audio if it is reported separately. For a 30-day month:

Estimated decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324

This calculation uses 2,592,000 seconds in 30 days and decimal gigabytes. It estimates media upload, not a measured bill: protocol overhead, bitrate variation, reconnects, and other household usage can change the total. For a 31-day month, use about 334.8 GB per Mbps; for 28 days, about 302.4 GB per Mbps. ISPs may display data using decimal or binary units, so check how your provider reports usage.

Examples using YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates

The estimates below are arithmetic based on YouTube’s recommended settings, not guaranteed usage. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), but actual transfer can vary. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists different recommendations for AV1 and H.265.

Stream setting Recommended bitrate Estimated upload in 30 days
H.264, 480p/30 fps 3 Mbps 972 GB
H.264, 720p/30 fps 6 Mbps 1,944 GB
H.264, 1080p/30 fps 5 Mbps 1,620 GB (about 1.51 TiB)
H.264, 1080p/60 fps 6 Mbps 1,944 GB (about 1.81 TiB)
H.264, 2160p/4K at 30 fps 42 Mbps 13,608 GB
AV1 or H.265, 1080p/30 fps 10 Mbps 3,240 GB

For example, a 24/7 H.264 1080p/30 stream at the recommended 5 Mbps would upload about 1,620 GB in 30 days before overhead and other household traffic. YouTube’s automatic transcoding creates viewer renditions; it does not remove the broadcaster’s upload requirement.

Find out what your ISP will charge

The upload estimate alone cannot determine your internet bill. You may pay only your ordinary subscription price if your plan includes unlimited data or your total usage stays within its allowance. On a metered plan, the stream and any other counted household use can contribute to the measured total. Depending on the provider and plan, exceeding an allowance may trigger an overage fee, reduced speed, or another consequence; check the terms attached to your account.

Use the exact plan and account details

  • Check the plan’s included monthly data and whether uploads and downloads both count.
  • Look for overage fees, throttling or other limits, and any regional or plan-type exclusions.
  • Check your ISP’s account usage meter during a test or live period; it reflects provider counting and units better than a bitrate estimate alone.
  • Review the broadband facts label for the specific offer at your address. Labels can disclose price, recurring and optional fees, upload and download speeds, latency, and included data. See Xfinity’s explanation of broadband facts labels.

Example: Xfinity’s policy is not a universal rule

Xfinity’s current 1.2 TB data plan FAQ says its 1.2 TB threshold applies only to certain older, legacy plans, with plan-type and regional exclusions; it says new internet plans include unlimited data. For eligible accounts covered by the stated policy, the FAQ describes a courtesy month for a first overage in a 12-month period, then a charge of $10 per additional 50 GB, up to $100 per month. These conditions apply to the provider’s specified accounts, not to internet plans generally. The same FAQ reports an average of about 498 GB of monthly usage for Xfinity customers; that provider-stated average is not a forecast for a continuous stream.

Work out your own likely total

  1. Find the encoder’s configured total bitrate in Mbps, including audio if separate.
  2. Multiply it by 324 for an approximate 30-day stream total in decimal GB. Adjust for the actual month length if you need a closer estimate.
  3. Add other household usage that your ISP counts, and leave room for overhead and variation.
  4. Compare that total with the allowance and billing rules on your specific plan; check your account meter and facts label.
  5. Compare the cost and limits of changing plans or hosting the continuous stream remotely with the cost and benefits of uploading from home.

Could a remote stream reduce home upload usage?

A cloud-hosted stream can move the continuous video upload from your home connection to a remote service’s infrastructure. It does not eliminate the need for your own internet access, nor does it establish the service’s price or limits; compare those separately with your broadband plan. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos, rather than going live from a camera. Its description of a remote 24/7 stream is at StreamNeo.
