US and Australian listings show similarly wide spreads: carbon singles range from $7,500 to $8,750 or AU$9,960, while larger boats and custom specifications cost substantially more. These are regional seller prices in different currencies and tax bases, not a single global market average. The final amount depends on hull class, construction tier, rower weight, riggers, fittings, finish, tax, freight and what the seller includes.

Why racing-shell prices have such a wide range
Hull class and crew size
A single scull, pair or double, four and eight are different hulls, not size variations of one product. They require different amounts of material, labor, rigging and transport. In Swift’s March 2026 list, 1x prices run from £3,600 to £6,650, while listed 2x boats run from £5,950 to £10,200 and a Carbon Pro 8+ is £26,600. Race1 lists its Olympic-class eight at AU$38,360 versus AU$9,960 for its single. Always compare the same crew configuration first.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Construction tier and stated weight
Manufacturers often offer club, intermediate and premium carbon tiers. Swift lists Club B, Club A, Elite Plus and Carbon Pro specifications. Its version 2.16A order document from May 2026 says a Club A single is approximately 2 kg heavier than an Elite Plus single, with additional crew-class differences. That is a manufacturer specification for those models, not a universal rule that every lighter shell is faster or every carbon label guarantees better performance.
Race1 describes its Club/SCUD class as approximately 10% heavier than its Olympic-class models and lists it at lower prices, although the page does not give a single comparable price for every Club/SCUD boat. Weight, stiffness and intended use should be evaluated together with the maker’s published specification.
Rigger type and included fittings
Rigging can move a quote by thousands. Swift’s listed boats include specified hard-anodised aluminium rigger choices, while carbon wings and quick-release hardware are options. Carl Douglas says its boats are supplied ready to race with AeRoWing riggers and fittings unless otherwise specified. Van Dusen publishes separate Advantage prices with and without carbon-fiber wing riggers. A quote should identify the rigger material, wing or traditional layout, quick-release arrangement and every fitting included.

Materials, finish and customization
Carl Douglas prices its CD-X, wood/Kevlar Custom and special veneer finishes differently. The company also lists separately priced options such as section joints, topstays, Speedcoach wiring, hand grips, a bottle pocket, deck stripes and lettering. Its guide notes: “Almost every one of our boats is unique and none are ‘ordinary’, so there is no ‘standard’ price list.” That statement explains why a published guide is a starting point rather than a guaranteed invoice.
Hull size and rower weight
A hull must fit the rower or crew’s weight range. Van Dusen explains that its hull sizes are based on weight classes and are intended to fit particular rower ranges. Buying the wrong size to save money can produce poor trim and an unsuitable setup. Give the builder each rower’s weight, expected clothing or equipment load and whether the boat is for one person or a changing crew before accepting a price.
Tax, freight and delivery can change the amount you pay
Seller currency is only one part of the cost. Carl Douglas lists ex-works prices in Chertsey and states that UK VAT is 20%; shipping varies. Swift’s March 2026 list is ex-warehouse and excludes VAT. Evergreen adds Washington sales tax and shipping where applicable. Race1 includes Australian GST but excludes delivery. These bases are not interchangeable.

For a useful comparison, add the same categories to every quote:
- Local sales tax, VAT or GST and whether the seller collects it.
- Freight from the factory or warehouse, plus insurance during transport.
- Oversize handling, customs, brokerage and any dealer or destination charges.
- Final-mile delivery, unloading and assembly or rigging at the club.
- Travel or collection costs if the price is ex-works or ex-warehouse.
Prices and freight are volatile. The examples above were checked on October 11, 2026; obtain a fresh written quote that states the currency, quote date and expiry period.
What is normally included—and what may be extra?
Ready-to-row equipment
Evergreen says its ready-to-row shell price includes a carbon seat, fin and bow ball, but not oars. Oars therefore need a separate equipment budget, and the appropriate choice depends on sculling versus sweep rowing and the rower’s requirements. Do not assume that “ready to row” means oars, cover, trailer hardware or electronics are included.

Options to ask about explicitly
- Seat type, seat wheels and adjustment range.
- Foot-stretcher, shoes, steering or rudder components and bow ball.
- Rigger material, wing style, quick release and spare hardware.
- Fin, cover, tools and any setup or measurement service.
- SpeedCoach or other wiring, deck graphics, lettering and custom veneer.
- Warranty length, repair support and replacement-part availability.
Get an itemized configuration rather than relying on a model name. Two boats carrying the same model label can have different delivered prices if one includes riggers, electronics or finish options.
How to compare two quotes fairly
- Match the boat class. Compare single with single, double with double and eight with eight.
- Confirm the weight range. Record the intended rower or crew weight and the builder’s matching hull size.
- Record the construction tier and stated weight. Keep the manufacturer’s model name and specification version with the quote.
- List the rigger package. Note aluminium or carbon, wing or standard, quick release and included fittings.
- Separate options from the base boat. Price each finish, joint, wiring, lettering, hand grip and similar item.
- Build the delivered total. Add tax, freight, insurance, customs, handling, assembly and delivery on the same basis.
- Budget equipment separately. Include oars and any cover, trailer or electronics not in the shell package.
- Check support terms. Ask about warranty, service, repairs, parts and the process for damage in transit.
- Compare quote dates. Record currency, validity period and whether the amount is a one-time promotion or a standing list price.
A higher price alone does not establish greater speed or durability. Carbon content, weight and finish matter only in the context of the complete specification, the rower’s fit and the manufacturer’s stated use.

New versus used: why classified prices are not a substitute
Used listings can help set expectations, but they are not new-shell prices. RowingAdverts reports averages from 1,051 boat listings posted over the preceding two years: £4,875 for 643 single-scull listings and £12,222 for 110 eight listings. Those are UK classified asking prices, not verified sale prices. The page states that actual sale prices may differ.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Age, repairs, included riggers, transport distance and the boat’s condition can move a used price substantially. Use the figures only as used-market context; do not subtract them from a new quote or treat them as a manufacturer average.
A practical budget before you order
Start with the shell specification, then create a delivered-cost worksheet. For example, a UK buyer considering a Swift Club B single should begin with the listed £3,600 ex-warehouse price, then add the applicable VAT, freight, insurance and any selected carbon rigger or quick-release options. A buyer considering an Evergreen carbon single should begin with $8,750, then add applicable Washington sales tax and shipping while separately budgeting oars. An Australian buyer looking at the AU$9,960 Race1 Olympic single should remember that GST is included but delivery is not.
For a custom boat, expect the worksheet to change during the design discussion. Carl Douglas’s guide covers different hull constructions and veneer choices but prices options individually; Van Dusen’s listings demonstrate that even the presence of riggers changes the displayed package. Keep the base hull, options, taxes and logistics on separate lines so you can see what caused the total to move.

Bottom line for a new racing shell
Published 2026 examples place entry-level club singles in the several-thousand-pound or dollar range, premium and custom singles around the low-to-high five figures, and larger crew boats from roughly the mid-five figures upward depending on currency and specification. There is no defensible global “average” from these listings. The price you should rely on is a current, itemized, delivered quote for the correct hull size and crew class, with riggers, fittings, tax, freight and excluded equipment identified.
