How Much Does a Minecraft Bedrock Server Cost in 2026? Realms, Hosting and Self-Hosting

Bedrock Realms costs $3.99/month for the owner plus two players, while Realms Plus costs $7.99/month for the owner plus 10. Rented hosting starts around $3.99, and self-hosting is free software but not free infrastructure.

Short answer: Minecraft Bedrock Realms costs $3.99 USD per month for the owner plus two simultaneous players. Realms Plus costs $7.99 per month for the owner plus 10 simultaneous players. Those are recurring US-dollar rates displayed by Minecraft; country, currency, platform-store taxes and local pricing can change the amount charged.

You can also run the free Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) software yourself, but “free” applies only to the download. You supply the computer, broadband connection, electricity, backups, updates and security. Rented Bedrock hosting starts at about $3.99 per month in a 2026 independent guide, although RAM, CPU, location, player slots and included services determine the actual bill.

Bedrock server costs at a glance

The right price depends less on the word “server” than on how much administration and control you want. Realms trades configuration freedom for a fixed subscription and simple setup. A rented host gives you more control without making you operate the physical machine. Self-hosting removes the server subscription but moves every infrastructure cost and task to you.

Option Published cost Simultaneous players Availability and backups Control and work
Realms for Bedrock $3.99 USD/month, recurring Minecraft rate Owner plus two Personal server intended to be available 24/7; free backups Very little administration; Marketplace support and three world slots
Realms Plus $7.99 USD/month, recurring Minecraft rate Owner plus 10 Realms features, including backups and persistent availability Simple management plus rotating Marketplace Pass catalog
Rented Bedrock hosting About $3.99/month starting price in GGameHost’s 2026 guide; indicative, not universal Not stated; depends on plan Provider operates the machine; uptime, backups and protection depend on the plan More file and configuration control; no hardware ownership
Self-hosted BDS Software download is free; infrastructure costs vary Not stated by the cited requirements As available as your powered machine and internet; you create and maintain backups Maximum control, but you handle installation, networking, updates and security

At the published Realms rates, a full year is $47.88 for Realms or $95.88 for Realms Plus before any applicable taxes or store adjustments. A hosting quote should be judged on its renewal price and included resources, not only its introductory number.

What Minecraft Realms includes

Realms: $3.99 per month

The standard Bedrock Realms subscription is a personal multiplayer server that remains available without the owner manually starting a computer. The owner can have two other players connected at the same time, while invited friends do not need to buy their own Realm subscription to join. Minecraft lists free backups, Marketplace support and three world slots with this tier.

“Simultaneous” means connected at the same moment, not the total number of people who may be invited over the life of the Realm. If your group has many occasional players but no more than three people need to be online together, the two-player allowance beyond the owner can be sufficient. If a fourth person needs to join while the owner and two others are connected, the limit—not the number of invitations—becomes the deciding constraint.

Realms Plus: $7.99 per month

Realms Plus keeps the Realms features and raises the simultaneous capacity to the owner plus 10 players. It also includes access to a rotating Marketplace Pass catalog. That content benefit matters only if your group will actually use the included catalog; it is not a substitute for a larger world, more CPU or unrestricted server files.

Minecraft’s setup guidance says eligible first-time subscribers can start with a 30-day free trial before the monthly charge. Eligibility is not universal, and trial terms can change, so confirm the offer shown on your account before treating the first month as free. The $7.99 rate is the recurring price after the trial when the subscription continues, subject to regional and platform billing differences.

What Realms does not give you

Realms is deliberately managed rather than fully configurable. You receive Minecraft’s hosted environment, world slots and backup behavior, but not ownership of the underlying machine or unrestricted operating-system access. This is usually an advantage for a family or friend group that wants to play instead of maintain a server. It is a limitation for an administrator who needs custom processes, unusual resource settings or direct control of every file.

Rented Bedrock hosting: a middle-ground bill

A rented host runs Bedrock server software on its hardware and charges you a recurring fee. The cited 2026 GGameHost guide places entry pricing at about $3.99 per month, with the final amount varying by RAM and CPU. Treat that figure as a starting market indication rather than a guaranteed price for every region or player count.

What changes the quote

  • Memory and CPU: Larger worlds, more simultaneous players and heavier add-ons generally require a plan with more resources. The guide identifies RAM and CPU as the main pricing variables.
  • Player slots: Confirm whether the advertised number is a hard simultaneous limit, a recommended capacity or merely a package label. A cheap plan that cannot hold your group is not a cheap solution.
  • Storage and world growth: Ask how much storage is included, whether backups consume that quota and what happens when the world exceeds it.
  • Backups: Determine how often automatic backups run, how many restore points are retained and whether downloading a backup costs extra.
  • Network protection and location: Check the server region, latency for your players and whether DDoS protection is included or sold separately.
  • Renewal terms: Compare the recurring price after any introductory period, billing interval, taxes and cancellation rules.

Rented hosting can stay online continuously because the provider operates the machine, but the exact uptime promise belongs to the provider’s plan. Read the service description for maintenance windows, support hours and restore procedures rather than assuming that every low-cost plan has the same availability as Realms.

When renting is worth the extra control

Choose a rented server when you need access to configuration files, want a player capacity beyond Realms’ fixed tiers, or prefer not to leave a home computer powered around the clock. You still need to understand the Bedrock software and protect account credentials, but you avoid purchasing and maintaining the physical host. The trade-off is a variable bill and a provider relationship: migration, support quality and data-export options matter if you later move elsewhere.

Self-hosting with the official Bedrock Dedicated Server

Minecraft describes BDS as “the official server software that lets you host a multiplayer world for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.” The program itself is free to download. That does not make a self-hosted server cost-free, because the computer, network connection and ongoing administration are yours.

Published BDS requirements

Requirement Published requirement What to budget for
Processor Intel Core i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600 equivalent A compatible machine; older hardware may meet the minimum but leaves less headroom for growth
Memory 4 GB RAM At least the documented amount reserved for the server and operating system
Storage 180 MB to 1 GB available Free space for the software and world data, with additional room for backups and world growth
Operating system Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later on Linux, or supported Windows 10/Windows Server versions A supported, updated operating system and the time to administer it
Network Broadband internet A stable connection, suitable upload capacity and a network configuration that lets intended players connect

The 180 MB-to-1 GB storage figure is the documented available-space requirement; it is not a promise that a frequently played world, logs and backup copies will remain within 1 GB. Reserve additional space before the disk becomes full, because a full disk can prevent saves or backups.

The costs hidden behind a free download

  • Hardware: If you already own a suitable desktop or small server, the incremental purchase cost may be zero. If not, amortize the machine over the months you expect to use it instead of comparing only software prices.
  • Electricity: A computer left on for a persistent world consumes power. Your local electricity rate and the machine’s actual draw determine this recurring cost.
  • Broadband: The server uses your home connection and may affect data usage, upload capacity and household reliability. Any upgrade needed for hosting belongs in the budget.
  • Backups: You must create, verify and store them. A second copy on the same disk does not protect against disk failure or accidental deletion.
  • Maintenance: Operating-system patches, BDS updates, permissions, monitoring and recovery are part of the owner’s workload.
  • Security: Exposing a service to the internet requires careful account, firewall and network management. A mistake can make the server unreachable or expose more of the home network than intended.

A practical self-hosting total is therefore: hardware cost allocated over its useful months, plus incremental electricity and broadband, plus backup and maintenance costs. Compare that total with the subscription you would otherwise pay. Self-hosting is most economical when appropriate hardware and a reliable connection already exist and someone is willing to perform the work.

Is a Minecraft Bedrock server free?

There are two different meanings of “free.” BDS is free software, so Mojang does not charge a license fee for downloading the server program. A 24/7 multiplayer service still needs a powered computer, internet access and administration. Realms is not free: it is a paid managed service, although eligible first-time Realms Plus subscribers may see a 30-day trial.

A home server can have no new monthly subscription if you reuse existing equipment and accept the electricity and maintenance costs. That is a cost-saving choice, not an absence of cost. It also does not provide the managed backups, support and simplified availability that come with Realms.

Which option is cheapest for your situation?

Two or three people who want to play immediately

Standard Realms is the clearest fixed-price answer at $3.99 per month. The owner plus two simultaneous players fit the published limit, friends can join without buying their own Realm subscription, and backups are included. You are paying to avoid server administration.

Up to 10 players online with Marketplace content

Realms Plus costs $7.99 per month for the owner plus 10 simultaneous players and adds the rotating Marketplace Pass catalog. It is usually the simplest choice when the group needs that capacity and does not need direct server-file control.

More control without buying a machine

Compare rented plans starting around $3.99 per month, but only after checking the actual RAM, CPU, slots, storage, backups, protection, region and renewal price. The cheapest advertised tier may not be appropriate once those requirements are added.

You already have suitable hardware

Self-hosted BDS can minimize subscription spending when the computer, broadband and electricity are already available. Select it only if you can take responsibility for updates, backups, security and recovery. The nominal software price is zero; the operational commitment is not.

Is Realms Plus worth it for 10 players?

For a group that needs the owner plus 10 people online at once, Realms Plus is the only published Realms tier in this comparison that reaches that capacity. Its $7.99 monthly price is $4 more than standard Realms and $95.88 over 12 months before taxes or regional adjustments. If all 11 permitted players shared the bill evenly, that would be about 73 cents per simultaneous player per month, but Minecraft bills the subscription owner; the arithmetic is only a way to understand scale, not a built-in group-payment feature.

The extra charge is easier to justify when the group uses the Marketplace Pass catalog or values managed backups and simple operation. It is less compelling for an administrator who needs custom files, operating-system access or capacity beyond the stated simultaneous-player limit; that use case points toward rented hosting or BDS instead.

A practical buying and setup checklist

  1. Count simultaneous players: Include the owner in the total. Compare that number with “owner plus two” or “owner plus 10,” rather than counting everyone who might ever receive an invitation.
  2. Choose your control level: Decide whether managed worlds and backups are enough or whether you need direct files, configuration and operating-system access.
  3. Calculate the complete recurring price: For Realms, use the displayed subscription plus applicable taxes or store adjustments. For a host, include renewal pricing, storage, backups, protection and any resource upgrades.
  4. Check geography and latency: Minecraft’s published figures are US-dollar rates. A rented server should be located where your players can connect reliably; currency conversion and local taxes can change the checkout total.
  5. Confirm recovery: Verify how a world is backed up, how long copies are retained and how you would restore or download one before inviting players.
  6. Test capacity before expanding: Run the intended world and normal add-ons with the expected number of players, then watch for lag, disconnects or storage pressure. Upgrade resources before the server becomes unreliable.
  7. Document ownership: Keep subscription credentials, world files and backup locations accessible to a trusted adult or administrator so the world is not lost if the original owner is unavailable.

Common pricing mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing invitations with capacity

Realms limits are simultaneous connections. A large invitation list does not increase the number who can be online together. Count the peak session, including the owner.

Treating a starting price as a complete hosting quote

“From $3.99” is an entry point in an independent 2026 guide, not a universal Bedrock price. Request the final recurring total for your region and required RAM, CPU, slots, backups, storage and protection.

Assuming trial eligibility

The 30-day Realms Plus trial is described for eligible first-time subscribers. Check the offer attached to your account and the date the paid renewal begins.

Forgetting regional billing differences

The published Realms amounts are US-dollar figures shown by Minecraft. Currency conversion, platform-store taxes and country-specific pricing can alter what appears at checkout.

Calling self-hosting “free” after buying hardware

Include the machine, power, broadband, backup storage and the value of administration when comparing BDS with a managed subscription. A reused computer can lower cash spending, but it does not remove those responsibilities.

Buying capacity without a recovery plan

More RAM or CPU does not replace backups. Before upgrading a rented or self-hosted server, establish where world copies live and how you will restore them after corruption, accidental deletion or a failed update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: budget for the service you actually need

For a small group that values convenience, budget $3.99 per month for Bedrock Realms. For the owner plus up to 10 simultaneous players and Marketplace Pass access, budget $7.99 per month for Realms Plus, subject to regional billing and trial eligibility. Choose rented hosting when you need more control but do not want to own the hardware; its 2026 entry indication is about $3.99 per month, with the real cost set by resources and provider terms. Choose self-hosted BDS when you already have suitable hardware and can operate the network, backups, updates and security. The cheapest headline number is not always the lowest total cost—the best value is the option whose player limit and workload match your group.
