How Much Does a 24/7 YouTube Stream Cost With FFmpeg on a Low-Power Celeron PC?

Estimate your 24/7 FFmpeg stream’s electricity bill from the whole PC’s measured wall power, then account separately for internet, software, and hardware costs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no reliable one-size-fits-all monthly price: it depends on the whole PC’s measured power use, your electricity rate, and any internet or equipment costs. To estimate electricity for a 30-day month, multiply the PC’s average wall draw in watts by 0.72, then multiply by your price per kWh. Measure the PC while it runs the FFmpeg setup you intend to use; a Celeron’s nominal power specification is not a measurement of the complete computer.

Calculate the monthly electricity cost

Use this formula:

Electricity cost = (average wall draw in watts ÷ 1,000) × streaming hours × electricity price per kWh

A 30-day month of continuous streaming is 720 hours (30 × 24). For that month, the formula simplifies to:

For example, if your measured system averages 20 W and your electricity rate is 0.20 currency units per kWh, the estimate is 20 ÷ 1,000 × 720 × 0.20 = 2.88 currency units. These are hypothetical inputs, not a Celeron benchmark or a typical bill. Substitute your own measured watts and tariff.

Measure the complete PC while it streams

Use the intended workload

Connect a plug-in electricity usage monitor between the computer and wall outlet. Run the actual source video and FFmpeg command, with the resolution, frame rate, codec, filters, and hardware-encoding settings you plan to use. Measure over a representative period rather than relying on the processor’s rated power or a brief idle reading. The wall measurement captures the computer and its components together; Intel notes that processor power varies with workload and system design.

Actual noise levels may vary by environment and workload.

Intel’s 2014 guideline gives a Celeron 2000E configuration-specific example: about 2.4 W idle with C-states enabled, 7.4 W idle with C-states disabled, and 13.2 W during 1080p video decoding. Those are not whole-PC wall measurements, are not measurements of FFmpeg streaming, and should not be applied as estimates for an unspecified Celeron mini PC. Intel’s processor power guidelines illustrate why a system-specific measurement matters.

Compare like with like

If you are considering a different Celeron PC or stream configuration, compare average wall watts under the intended load, hours streamed, electricity rate, output settings and bitrate, encoding support, upload capability, and separate recurring costs. Keep a hardware purchase or replacement budget distinct from monthly electricity.

Include costs beyond electricity

Electricity is only one part of the cost. Add any applicable internet-plan charge or data overage, paid software or hosting, and hardware purchase or replacement costs separately. If you use backup power protection, account for that separately too. Your ISP’s upload capability and data policy, and your local electricity tariff, are specific to your location and plan; there is no universal amount to add.

Check that the Celeron and connection can sustain the stream

Choose settings your uplink can handle

YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and setting the stream to what your connection can sustain. Its encoder-settings guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, examples include 6 Mbps for 720p60 and 3 Mbps for 480p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not a measurement of your connection or a guarantee that a particular Celeron can encode at those settings. YouTube also transcodes live video for viewer formats. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings, test the upload rate, and monitor stream health.

Verify hardware encoding rather than assuming it

The name “Celeron” alone does not establish that Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV) is available or usable. Compatibility depends on the exact processor generation and graphics hardware, drivers, FFmpeg build, source and output codecs, and filter chain. FFmpeg’s documented QSV path requires support from both decoder and encoder; the described accelerated path does not use filters. Consult the FFmpeg QSV documentation for the build and command details that apply to your setup. This is not a guarantee of compatibility or continuous stability on an untested PC.

Set up FFmpeg and YouTube for a long-running stream

  1. Prepare the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it.
  2. Configure FFmpeg’s ingest and encoding. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder configuration. Choose RTMP or RTMPS, a codec and output format supported by your FFmpeg build, and a bitrate that fits the tested upload connection. Follow YouTube’s CBR and two-second keyframe recommendations. For a private test, verify the resulting stream in YouTube Studio before relying on it.
  3. Test the full workload. Run the exact source and command you will use, watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and check the system’s wall draw, temperature, and whether frames are being delivered as intended. A settings choice that is affordable in electricity terms is not useful if the PC or uplink cannot sustain it.
  4. Plan for interruptions. YouTube’s encoder instructions say that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish a 24/7 uninterrupted-session guarantee or a restart schedule. If you need continuity, consider how your FFmpeg process will be restarted after a failure and how you will monitor it; a watchdog or restart loop is an implementation choice, not a YouTube requirement.

See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current server URL and stream-key workflow.
