Measure the running computer at the wall, then calculate its energy use and cost.
What determines the electricity cost?
Quick Sync Video (QSV) can move video encoding work from the CPU to compatible Intel hardware, but that does not establish how many watts your complete computer will use or how much money it will save. Whole-system draw varies with the processor and graphics configuration, encode settings, source playback and scene composition, other running processes, and power-management behavior. Intel describes selecting Quick Sync in OBS when available as a way to reduce system strain; OBS likewise explains that hardware encoders handle encoding on specialized components. Include everything that stays powered during the stream: motherboard, memory, storage, fans, any discrete GPU, and peripherals. Include a display and audio or video equipment if you want the cost of the full streaming station rather than only the PC tower. Processor TDP, encoder utilization, or a momentary watt reading is not a substitute for average wall power.

Measure your setup, then calculate its cost
1. Record real energy use
A plug-in watt meter that records cumulative kilowatt-hours (kWh) can measure the computer’s wall use. Run your normal continuous-stream workload for a representative period. Streaming loads can fluctuate as source material, scenes, background tasks, and power states change; for variable consumption, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends measuring over time and deriving average power from the energy used. If the meter reports kWh, divide the energy consumed by the number of hours measured to get average kW, then multiply by 1,000 for average watts. For example, if your setup uses 1.2 kWh over 10 hours, its measured average is 120 W. This example demonstrates the calculation; it is not a benchmark for a Quick Sync stream.
2. Apply the formulas
- Daily energy: average watts × 24 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day.
- Daily energy cost: daily kWh × your electricity price per kWh.
- Approximate 30-day energy cost: daily cost × 30. For your exact billing period, use its actual number of days or hours.
For illustration, a measured average of 120 W uses 2.88 kWh per day (120 × 24 ÷ 1,000). At an assumed rate of 15¢/kWh, that would be 43.2¢ per day, or $12.96 over 30 days. These figures are arithmetic examples, not a claim about typical PC draw or your tariff.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations help configure the stream, but bitrate is a network setting, not a measure of the computer’s electrical draw. YouTube recommends settings such as bitrate ranges, constant bitrate (CBR), and RTMPS, and transcodes incoming streams for viewers on different devices and networks. YouTube’s live encoder settings

To start an encoder-based YouTube live stream, YouTube’s setup guidance calls for entering its Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions Following recommended output settings can help deliver the intended stream, but only a meter on your actual equipment can establish its power use.
How to compare Quick Sync with another setup
There is no established like-for-like QSV-versus-CPU power result for this particular 24/7 YouTube use case. If you want to know which option costs less on your equipment, measure both rather than assuming QSV guarantees a saving.

- Keep the computer, source video, scene composition, output resolution and frame rate, bitrate, and measurement duration the same.
- Change only the encoder mode being compared, then let the stream run long enough to capture normal variation.
- Record average wall watts or cumulative kWh for each run, then calculate cost using the same electricity tariff.
- Also compare stream quality and stability, including dropped frames and encoding lag; lower energy use is not useful if the stream no longer meets your needs.
Context for published electricity prices
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program used 11¢/kWh as an average electricity-price assumption in federal-facility computer-purchasing examples in July 2024. That is an example for those calculations, not a current household rate or a universal U.S. price. DOE computer-purchasing guidance No directly applicable published figure establishes typical whole-system watts or monthly electricity cost for a 24/7 Quick Sync YouTube stream, so a measured estimate from your own setup is more useful than a generic figure.
