There is no reliable one-price answer: the cost depends on the specific job. For a useful estimate, add the material, electricity, printer wear, hands-on labor, finishing and consumables, plus a clearly stated allowance for failed prints. If you are setting a selling price, add business overhead, fees, packing, shipping and profit separately.
How to estimate the cost of a filament print
Start with the slicer’s estimate for the job and the price you actually paid for the material. Then add the costs tied to running and completing that print. Keep assumptions visible: calculator defaults are choices, not universal rates.
Material
Use this calculation: grams used ÷ 1,000 × spool price per kilogram. Include supports, purge material and a brim if the slicer estimate includes them. If you want to account for likely waste beyond that estimate, add an explicit allowance rather than quietly treating it as part of the spool price. One calculator uses a configurable 10% failure buffer; that is an example assumption, not a general failure rate. CalcCorp’s cost calculator shows the kinds of inputs that can be included.
Electricity
Calculate average power in watts ÷ 1,000 × print hours × electricity price per kWh. Use average draw while printing if you have it; a printer’s power-supply maximum rating does not tell you what a particular job consumed. Use the electricity rate on your own bill where possible, since prices vary by place and customer type.

- 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
- 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
- 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
- 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
For context, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported 2025 national annual average retail electricity prices of 17.30¢ per kWh for residential customers and 13.41¢ per kWh for commercial customers. Those 2025 figures were preliminary in the EIA’s February 2026 data release; they are context, not a substitute for your tariff. See the EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.3, and its explanation of electricity prices and factors that affect them.
Printer wear
If you want to include equipment use, one simple estimate is printer purchase price ÷ assumed service life in hours × print hours. State the assumed service life. A 5,000-hour default appears in one calculator, but it is a calculation input, not a guarantee that a printer will last that long. Calculator Collection’s filament and electricity calculator and Arzentiq’s 3D printing cost calculator illustrate how estimates can organize these inputs; their defaults should not be mistaken for universal facts.

Labor, finishing and consumables
Include hands-on time for preparing the job, removing supports, cleaning up the part, and any other post-processing. Add consumables used in your workflow. A printer may run unattended, but the time spent preparing and finishing a usable part is still part of production cost.
Waste and failed prints
Failed jobs can consume both material and machine time. Include an expected failure cost only if you have a defensible basis for it, and explain that basis. A 2025 Applied Sciences study reported 15% waste by weight in the FDM process it studied, primarily from supports and failed prints. That result is specific to the studied process; it is not a general waste or failure rate for all printers, geometries, jobs or 3D-printing technologies. Read the study.

Put the estimate together without double-counting
A practical production-cost formula is:
Production cost = material + electricity + machine wear + labor + finishing and consumables + expected failure cost
Check how each input is defined before adding it. For example, if your material figure already includes supports and purge, do not add those grams again as separate waste. Similarly, if you build a failed-print allowance into material use, avoid counting the same allowance a second time elsewhere. Cost calculators may allocate failure and overhead differently, so state the convention you use.

A quote to a customer is a different number from the cost to produce the part. Add any relevant business overhead, selling-platform fees, packaging, shipping and desired profit to the production cost. The CalcCorp calculator is one example of a tool that lays out cost inputs, but its defaults are assumptions rather than a standard pricing rule.

- Material quantity and the price you pay for it
- Supports, waste and any process-specific consumables
- Machine or cycle time and the electricity used
- Equipment wear or the cost of outsourcing
- Hands-on setup, cleanup and finishing time
- Failure risk, using an assumption grounded in your own workflow
Resin workflows may require additional post-processing, but a general dollar comparison cannot be made without process-specific quantities and prices. The same principle applies to any comparison: use the actual material, time, energy, equipment and finishing requirements for the part in question.
What to use for a real estimate
For a quick filament estimate, take the slicer’s grams and your actual spool price, then calculate electricity from average draw, print duration and your local rate. Add machine wear if you want to account for equipment use, and include labor, finishing, consumables and expected failures when they apply. If you are selling the part, keep the production estimate separate from the final quote so that fees, overhead, delivery and profit are clear.
