Pennsylvania tourism generated $51.6 billion in visitor spending in 2025 and an estimated $87.2 billion in total economic impact, while supporting 521,021 jobs. Those are different measures: the $87.2 billion includes modeled effects beyond visitors’ purchases, and the job total includes direct, indirect and induced employment.
What the 2025 figures measure
Tourism Economics’ report, published in September 2026, estimates that 206.2 million visitors traveled to Pennsylvania in 2025, a 2.3% increase from 2024. Their spending reached $51.6 billion, up 3.5% year over year. The report’s headline economic-impact figure is larger because it counts business sales associated with that spending and its subsequent effects.
The report estimates $87.2 billion in total business sales impact, $3.3 billion more than in 2024. It is not accurate to describe the full $87.2 billion as visitor spending. Tourism-demand GDP—a separate measure that excludes the value of imported goods and services—was estimated at $41.7 billion, or 3.9% of Pennsylvania’s economy. How visitor spending adds up to $87.2 billion
Tourism Economics separates the estimated impact into three layers. Direct impact reflects visitor purchases; indirect impact captures supply-chain purchases by businesses serving visitors; induced impact reflects workers spending locally earned income. The model traces these effects through businesses, households and government.

The analysis is demand-side: it draws on visitor surveys and statistics, spending by category, industry-specific information and government data, then applies a local input-output model built within IMPLAN. These are modeled estimates, not a direct count of every transaction attributable to tourism.
How many jobs tourism supported
The report estimates that tourism supported 521,021 jobs in Pennsylvania in 2025, about 6.3% of state employment, or roughly one in 16 jobs. That total combines 344,571 direct jobs, 72,912 indirect jobs and 103,537 induced jobs. It should not be read as 521,021 people employed directly by tourism businesses.

Among sectors, food and beverage accounted for 134,951 total supported jobs, recreation and entertainment for 62,466, and lodging for 57,874.
Where visitors spent their money
Transportation was the largest visitor-spending category in 2025, including ground and air transportation. Lodging includes all accommodation types.

The report attributes overall spending growth to a combination of more visitors and higher prices for tourism-related goods and services. International visitor spending, by contrast, fell 1.7% year over year.
Why overnight visitors account for a larger spending share
Overnight visitors made up 34.8% of visitors but generated 60.4% of visitor spending. The report counts 71.7 million overnight visitors and $31.1 billion in their spending. Day visitors numbered 134.5 million and spent $20.5 billion. The contrast shows why visitor counts alone do not describe tourism’s economic contribution.

How the figures compare with 2024
On the reported headline measures, visitor volume, spending, total impact and supported jobs all increased. Visitor spending rose 3.5% and the number of visitors rose 2.3%; the total impact figure increased by $3.3 billion.

Taxes and other economic effects
Tourism Economics estimates that visitor activity supported $5.205 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2025, commonly rounded to $5.2 billion. The report compares that state-and-local figure with about $984 per Pennsylvania household in replacement taxes. That is the report’s way of expressing the scale of the tax contribution; it is not a tax bill or a verified saving for each household.
The report also estimates $10.9 billion in total government tax revenues and $27.5 billion in total personal income. These are separate modeled measures and should not be added to the $87.2 billion sales-impact figure as if they were additional visitor spending.
What the statewide total does not show
The headline figures describe Pennsylvania as a whole. The state’s annual reporting also presents regional and county-level findings on visitor spending, employment, earnings, gross state product and tax revenue. Statewide totals alone do not establish which counties or regions had the largest impact. The official report index links to the state, regional and county materials.
