How Much Data Should You Buy for an International Trip?

Estimate international travel data from your daily activities, trip length, Wi-Fi access, and plan limits—not a one-size-fits-all daily allowance.

There is no universal travel-data allowance. Estimate your use from the activities that consume the most data—especially streaming, video calls, and hotspot use—then adjust for trip length, Wi-Fi, and the plan’s speed and coverage rules. Provider estimates are useful starting points, not guarantees of what any traveler will use.

Start with the activities you’ll do on mobile data

Messaging and ordinary navigation usually use far less data than streaming, video calls, or sharing your connection with a laptop. A day spent chatting and checking maps can fit a modest allowance; an hour of video can shift the calculation substantially. Think through a typical travel day before choosing a bundle, including the time you expect to be away from Wi-Fi.

Orange Travel’s guide, published September 28, 2026, gives these approximate usage rates. They are provider estimates, not measurements of every app, device, or traveler.

Activity Approximate use Examples cited by Orange Travel
Messaging 5 MB per hour WhatsApp, iMessage
Social media 150 MB per hour Instagram, Facebook, TikTok
Navigation 7.5 MB per hour Google Maps, Waze
Streaming 480 MB per hour YouTube, Netflix
Video calls 300 MB per hour FaceTime and similar services

These figures show why “hours online” is not enough to estimate a plan. An hour of messaging and an hour of streaming are not remotely equivalent. App settings, image and video quality, background activity, offline files, and the way an app loads content can all move actual consumption away from these approximations. Orange says the data used by the same activity does not change just because the country changes; what can differ by destination is the plan’s coverage, availability, and price.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use trip length as a starting allowance, not a promise

Provider recommendations vary because their light, moderate, average, and heavy profiles are not a universal standard. The figures below are published guidance, not a representative study of travelers’ real-world usage. Use them to frame a choice, then refine the estimate for your own habits.

Trip length Orange Travel guidance Vodafone Travel guidance
Four days Light: 1 GB; moderate: 3 GB; heavy: 5–7 GB Not stated in its cited guide
One week Light: 2 GB; moderate: 5 GB; heavy: 10 GB Light: 3–5 GB; average: 8–15 GB; heavy: 20–40 GB
Two weeks Light: 4 GB; moderate: 10 GB; heavy: 20 GB For Europe: 5–10 GB for occasional email, messaging, and maps; 20 GB for more regular use; 50 GB for intensive video, remote work, high-resolution uploads, or hotspot use
One month Light: 8 GB; moderate: 20 GB; heavy: 40 GB Not stated in its cited guide

Orange’s trip-length figures come from its guide published September 28, 2026. Vodafone Travel’s general one-week ranges come from a guide accessed October 9, 2026, which did not show a publication date. Its separate two-week figures apply to Europe and were on a destination FAQ accessed October 9, 2026; they are not a universal recommendation for every region. The differences between the providers reflect differing usage profiles and assumptions, not a settled average.

Calculate a personal estimate in four steps

  1. Estimate hours per day. For a typical day, note how long you expect to message, use social media, navigate, stream, and make video calls. Include hotspot use as a separate need because the device connected to your phone may download or update content in the background.
  2. Multiply each activity by its approximate hourly rate. Use the Orange Travel figures above as a rough calculator. For example, a day with two hours of messaging, one hour of social media, half an hour of navigation, and half an hour of streaming works out to about 404 MB: 10 MB + 150 MB + 3.75 MB + 240 MB.
  3. Multiply the daily total by the trip length. That example would be about 2.8 GB across seven days before accounting for Wi-Fi or downloads made in advance. The arithmetic is only as reliable as the activity estimate and provider usage approximations behind it.
  4. Adjust for Wi-Fi, offline content, and the cost of running short. Subtract activities you expect to move to hotel or other Wi-Fi, and reduce map, music, or video use by downloading files over Wi-Fi before leaving. Add a practical buffer if topping up is difficult, expensive, or unavailable where you are going.

The calculation helps distinguish a light-use itinerary from a video-heavy one; it cannot guarantee a particular bill or usage total. A navigation app may use more or less than the estimate depending on settings and background behavior, and the same is true of social apps and streaming quality.

Account for Wi-Fi and offline downloads

Reliable Wi-Fi can reduce how much mobile data you need, particularly when accommodation offers a connection you can use for calls, large downloads, or work. Vodafone notes that accommodation Wi-Fi can dramatically reduce usage. That reduction depends on how often it is available and whether you are comfortable relying on it; do not assume every connection will be fast, secure, or usable throughout the day.

Before departure, download offline maps for the places you expect to visit, along with playlists or other large files you know you will want. Orange recommends downloading maps and playlists over Wi-Fi. This shifts the download itself off your travel allowance, although it does not eliminate all data use: apps may still need a connection for updates, live information, or content that was not saved offline.

Compare the plan’s rules, not just its headline GB

A bundle with enough nominal data can still be a poor fit if it expires too soon, excludes a country on your itinerary, limits high-speed use, or does not permit hotspotting. Check the plan terms for the specific destination and dates before paying.

  • Usable allowance and validity: Find out whether the amount is a fixed bundle, a daily cap, or a high-speed allowance followed by slower service. Confirm how long it lasts and when its clock starts.
  • Country coverage: Check every country you will visit, including layovers if you may use data there. A regional allowance may be shared among covered countries rather than replenished in each one.
  • Speed after the allowance: If a plan says “unlimited,” determine whether that means unlimited high-speed data or continued service at reduced speed after a high-speed threshold.
  • Hotspot and sharing: Check whether tethering is allowed and whether the data amount can handle a laptop or another traveler’s devices. A hotspot can consume data through background updates or cloud syncing as well as deliberate browsing.
  • Top-ups: Confirm whether extra data can be purchased, how much it costs, and whether a top-up extends the plan’s validity. Do not assume you can add data after reaching the limit.
  • Voice and text: Some travel eSIM bundles provide data only. If you need a local number or ordinary calls and texts, check those features separately.
  • Total cost: Compare the total for the full trip, including any daily carrier charges and charges for multiple lines, rather than comparing only the bundle’s data amount.

Choose how you’ll connect

Check your existing mobile plan first

Your home carrier may already include roaming, or may offer a pass that uses a defined allowance. Apple Support advises travelers to check whether their network provider includes international roaming or sells a travel pass. Confirm the destinations, eligible lines, and charges that apply to your account; a pass offered by one carrier is not necessarily available to another carrier’s customers.

Current carrier pages illustrate how different the mechanics can be. T-Mobile’s international pass page, accessed October 9, 2026, lists 2 GB for one day, 15 GB for 10 days, or 30 GB for 30 days for eligible customers and covered destinations; it says the allowance is not restricted to a daily amount. Verizon’s TravelPass page, also accessed October 9, describes 5 GB of high-speed data followed by unlimited data at 3G speeds in the described TravelPass session. Its monthly plan describes 20 GB at high speed followed by data at 3G speeds. Check destination and account eligibility before relying on either example.

AT&T’s International Day Pass uses a daily-fee structure: the fee applies per 24-hour period of use in covered destinations. Its support page, accessed October 9, 2026, says that at sea, speeds may be reduced after 500 MB in a 24-hour period on certain ships. Background apps can trigger use and therefore a fee. These examples explain why it is important to read the terms for your own line; they do not establish which option will be cheapest for a particular itinerary.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Consider a travel eSIM

A travel eSIM can provide a local or regional data bundle without replacing a physical SIM. Data amounts, expiration periods, coverage, and included services vary by provider and destination. Apple Support says another provider’s travel eSIM requires an unlocked iPhone. On an iPhone, look in Settings for the carrier-lock status “No SIM Restrictions.”

Using two lines does not automatically prevent roaming charges. Apple notes that keeping both the home and travel lines active can still incur charges on the home line, depending on how the phone is set up and used. Apple also states: “International roaming with an eSIM works just like roaming with a physical SIM.” Treat the home line’s roaming settings and charges as a separate item to verify, even after installing a travel eSIM.

Consider a physical prepaid SIM

A physical prepaid SIM is another option for a compatible, unlocked phone. The Associated Press described physical SIMs and eSIMs as travel-connectivity choices and noted that providers sell country- or region-based packages. Before buying, verify the included data, destination coverage, expiry, and whether voice or text is included. The exact product matters more than the label “international travel SIM card with data.”

Make the final choice for your itinerary

Use your activity estimate to select a plan size, then test that choice against the destination and terms. A week of messaging, occasional map checks, and dependable Wi-Fi may fit a smaller allowance than a week with daily video, remote work, frequent uploads, or laptop tethering. If two plans appear similar, compare high-speed limits, expiry, coverage, hotspot rules, and top-up options before comparing price.

  • Choose less data when: you mostly message and navigate, have dependable Wi-Fi, and can download large files in advance.
  • Allow more when: you expect regular streaming or video calls, need to work online, upload large files, or share data by hotspot.
  • Verify before purchase: the phone is compatible and unlocked if required, every intended country is covered, and your home line will not incur unexpected roaming charges.

If you are between two plan sizes, the right decision depends on the consequence of running short. Where top-ups are easy and reasonably priced, a smaller initial bundle may be sufficient. Where access or top-ups are uncertain, a larger allowance or a plan with a clear high-speed and top-up policy can reduce the risk of losing useful connectivity.
