Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose a phone-plan allowance from your cellular data use, not from the number of hours you spend on your phone. Review two or three billing cycles, separate mobile-network activity from Wi‑Fi, identify video and hotspot use, and select the next allowance that leaves room for your normal high-use month.
There is no universal “right” number. A person who mostly messages over Wi‑Fi may use less than 1 GB per month, while someone who streams video on cellular or tethers a laptop can use 19 GB, 30 GB, or more. Your carrier’s speed limits, hotspot rules, coverage and billing period are as important as the headline gigabyte figure.

What a phone-plan data allowance actually measures
Your allowance applies to data sent through the carrier’s mobile network during the plan’s billing period. Web pages, video, music, navigation, cloud backups, app updates and messages use that allowance when the phone is on cellular data. The same activity normally uses your home, office or public Wi‑Fi connection instead when Wi‑Fi is active, so it does not reduce the mobile allowance.

The phone may switch between Wi‑Fi and cellular without an obvious change on screen. Weak Wi‑Fi, a disconnected router or a setting such as Wi‑Fi Assist can therefore make a month look different from another. Hotspot tethering counts too: data shared from the phone to a laptop, tablet or another handset is still mobile-network traffic. Automatic app and photo updates are another frequent source of background use when they are permitted over cellular.

The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) summarizes the principle in its consumer guidance, “Understanding Mobile Data”: “The amount of mobile data a user needs depends on how he or she uses the Internet.” That is why a national average cannot tell you which plan to buy.
Measure your own cellular use before changing plans
Use the phone’s counter to see which apps consumed data, then verify the dates against the carrier’s records. The counter is useful only if its measurement period matches your bill.
- Open the mobile-data report. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular. On Android, the labels vary by manufacturer and version; common paths are Settings > Network & internet > Data usage or Settings > Connections > Data usage. AT&T’s current US guidance uses these same examples while noting that Android menus differ.
- Match the dates. Find the carrier’s billing-cycle start and end dates in its account or bill. If the phone’s counter was reset on a different day, its monthly total will not correspond to the carrier’s total. Use the carrier’s usage record as a cross-check.
- Record two or three complete cycles. Note the total cellular data and the top-consuming apps for each cycle. A single month that included a holiday, broadband outage or unusual commute can be misleading.
- Mark the cause of peaks. Separate cellular video and video calls, social feeds with autoplay, music, navigation, travel, photo backup, app updates and hotspot sessions. Also note which of these activities normally happen on Wi‑Fi.
- Keep the highest normal month. Do not size a plan to an exceptionally quiet month if your work, travel or home-internet situation regularly changes. The allowance should cover ordinary variation without relying on emergency add-ons.
AT&T’s July 7, 2026 consumer article gives the practical advice to check “two or three months of cellular usage” before switching. That is provider-authored guidance rather than an independent study, but the method is sound for any carrier.

How much data common activities can use
OFCA publishes indicative smartphone estimates and warns that actual consumption can vary significantly by app, quality setting and network conditions. These figures are averages, not guaranteed rates for every service.
| Activity | Indicative mobile-data use | What changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| One hour of standard-quality streaming video | About 700 MB | Resolution, frame rate, compression and autoplay can raise or lower it. |
| One hour of high-quality streaming video | About 3 GB | High resolution can consume more than four times the standard estimate. |
| One email without an attachment | About 15 kB | Attachments and inline images are much larger. |
| One web page | About 1 MB | Advertising, video, large images and repeated refreshes add data. |
| Five minutes of normal-quality streaming music | About 4 MB | Audio quality and offline downloads alter the total. |
| One photo sent in an instant-messaging app | About 200 kB | Original-resolution images and video clips are larger. |
Using those estimates, two hours of standard video would be roughly 1.4 GB, while two hours of high-quality video would be roughly 6 GB. Those are arithmetic illustrations, not promises about a particular streaming app. A few such sessions can outweigh thousands of text messages or emails.

Use activity profiles to see why allowances vary
Ericsson’s Mobility Calculator presents modeled profiles to illustrate how habits affect traffic. They are not a universal population average or a personal recommendation.
| Modeled profile | Illustrative monthly use | Behavior represented |
|---|---|---|
| Light usage | 1 GB per month; some market segments are below 1 GB | Mostly light browsing and communication, with little cellular video. |
| Social-media-centric | 5 GB per month | Almost three hours a day on social media, excluding video. |
| Video-centric | 19 GB per month | More than an hour of video streaming over cellular per day; video exceeds 90% of monthly traffic. |
| Heavy usage | 30 GB per month | Video dominates overall mobile traffic. |
The comparison shows why “screen time” is a poor proxy. Three hours of text-heavy social use can fit a very different allowance from one hour of high-resolution video. Whether the phone is connected to cellular or Wi‑Fi is equally decisive.

Public statistics measure different things in different places. Keep the geography, date and definition attached to every number rather than combining them into one supposed average user.
| Source and market | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission data reported by Statistics Canada, Canada, Q4 2025 | 11.0 GB of mobile data per subscriber per month; 9.3 GB in Q4 2024 | Average traffic per subscriber with a data plan, not a recommended allowance. |
| UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology survey, 2025/2026 | 23% of smartphone adults reported unlimited data. The most common capped band was 10 to less than 30 GB (18%), followed by 30 to 100 GB (14%). | Plan-allowance distribution, not measured consumption. |
| UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology survey, 2025/2026 | Among users without unlimited data, 69% said they never ran out and 19% said they occasionally ran out. | Reported run-out frequency; it does not show whether the allowance was economically optimal. |
| Ericsson Mobility Calculator, page undated and accessed in 2026 | Modeled profiles of 1, 5, 19 and 30 GB per month | Illustrative usage patterns, not a national average. |
Canada’s subscriber traffic, UK plan choices and Ericsson’s modeled habits answer different questions. None should replace your own two- or three-cycle history.
Turn your history into an allowance
For low, predictable use
If your complete cycles remain below 1 GB and you rarely use cellular video or hotspot, a capped tier may be sufficient. Check that background updates and travel will not create a recurring spike. The relevant comparison is the next available tier above your normal high month, not the smallest advertised number.

For moderate use with occasional video
If your records show several gigabytes a month, identify whether video, social autoplay or a temporary Wi‑Fi failure caused the peak. Keep enough room for the highest month you regard as normal. A plan that is adequate only when every device stays on Wi‑Fi can become expensive once a home-internet outage or commute is added.
For frequent cellular video
Video quality is the key variable. OFCA’s estimates put one hour at about 700 MB in standard quality and about 3 GB in high quality. Someone watching over cellular most days can move quickly from a single-digit allowance into the teens or beyond. Downloading video on Wi‑Fi, lowering quality and disabling autoplay can reduce demand, but those are behavioral choices rather than substitutes for checking the actual bill.
For hotspot and travel use
Include every tethered device in the total. A laptop operating system, cloud-sync client or video call can consume data faster than phone browsing. Travel can also remove your usual Wi‑Fi and create a high month, so use a travel month as a planning input if similar trips occur regularly. If hotspot use is occasional but large, compare an add-on with a permanently larger allowance.
A simple calculation
Take the largest of your recent ordinary monthly totals, then choose the next plan tier that exceeds it while meeting your hotspot needs. If the largest month was caused by a one-time event you will not repeat, document that exception rather than allowing it to dictate every future bill. Recheck the decision after a change in job, home broadband, travel pattern or tethering routine.
Do you really need unlimited data?
Unlimited can be sensible when cellular use is high, unpredictable or difficult to monitor, especially for frequent travelers, heavy video streamers and regular hotspot users. It is not automatically the cheapest choice for someone whose measured use is low and stable.

Read what “unlimited” means in the specific plan. Some offers provide unlimited access but reduce speed after a threshold, impose a separate high-speed hotspot cap, deprioritize traffic during congestion or restrict tethering. Others may stop data or charge for extra usage when a capped allowance is reached. The label alone does not establish unlimited high-speed data for every device.
Compare plans on more than the gigabyte headline
When two plans are available in your market, put their terms on the same axes. Exact prices, coverage and overage rules are carrier- and market-specific and must be checked in current plan documents.
| Comparison point | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Monthly price | Is the amount recurring, promotional, tax-inclusive and based on one line or multiple lines? |
| Included high-speed data | How many gigabytes retain the advertised speed? |
| After the allowance | Does data slow, stop, trigger an overage charge or require an add-on? |
| Rollover and add-ons | Do unused gigabytes carry forward, and what do extra or travel data cost? |
| Hotspot rules | Is tethering included, capped separately or prohibited at full speed? |
| Coverage | Does the network work where you live, work, commute and travel? |
| Measurement period | When does the cycle reset, and does it match the period shown in your phone settings? |
AT&T’s July 2026 article illustrates a provider-specific menu of 5 GB, 15 GB and unlimited options, with hotspot and extra-data choices described separately. Those tiers are a US example, not a general market comparison or an endorsement.

Counting all phone time as mobile data
Hours spent reading downloaded articles or streaming over Wi‑Fi do not equal hours on cellular. Use the cellular total and the app breakdown instead of screen-time totals.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTrusting a counter with the wrong reset date
If the phone counter starts on the first of the month but your carrier cycle starts on the 17th, the two totals describe different periods. Reset the counter to the carrier’s cycle where the operating system allows it, or rely on the carrier record for the final comparison.

Ignoring background activity
Photo synchronization, automatic app updates and operating-system downloads can run when you are not actively using the phone. Review per-app cellular permissions and enable Wi‑Fi-only updates where appropriate, but do not assume every spike is a billing error.
Assuming hotspot is included at full speed
Hotspot data may have its own allowance even on an “unlimited” plan. Check the tethering line in the terms before using a phone as a home-internet replacement.
Using one unusual month as the baseline
A vacation, outage or temporary work arrangement can distort the result. Keep several cycles and label exceptional events so that a one-off does not force a permanently oversized plan.
When to review the decision
- Review after changing jobs, schools, commute or home broadband.
- Review after adding a tablet, laptop tethering or regular travel.
- Review if video quality, autoplay or backup settings change.
- Review if you repeatedly approach the cap, incur add-on charges or experience reduced speeds.
- Review at least after another two or three representative billing cycles rather than reacting to one isolated spike.
The practical answer is therefore personal: measure cellular traffic over matching billing periods, understand what created it, and buy the smallest allowance that covers your normal high-use month under the plan’s actual speed, hotspot and overage rules. Averages can explain the range—from below 1 GB to 30 GB or more—but only your usage record can set the right number for you.
