If your “Sharp 5 netherite sword” means a netherite sword with Sharpness V (the enchantment level 5), you can calculate its damage precisely. The exact number matters because Minecraft shows combat in hearts, then applies armor math and (optionally) critical-hit multipliers.
This guide gives you the raw attack damage for Sharpness V, then shows what that usually becomes after armor reduction—plus a few real examples so you can predict fight outcomes.

What Sharpness V Means on a Netherite Sword
In Minecraft, a netherite sword has a base attack damage and enchantments add bonus damage on top. “Sharpness 5” refers to Sharpness V, the enchantment at level 5.

Sharpness V Damage Numbers (Raw Attack Damage)
On the standard sword damage model used by both editions, a netherite sword’s base damage is 8.0. Sharpness adds +1.25 damage per Sharpness level.
So for Sharpness V:
- Sharpness bonus = 5 × 1.25 = 6.25
- Raw attack damage = 8.0 + 6.25 = 14.25
In hearts (Minecraft uses 2 health points per heart), raw damage corresponds to:
- 14.25 ÷ 2 = 7.125 hearts before armor reduction
Quick table: Sharpness levels on a netherite sword
| Sharpness Level | Bonus Damage | Raw Attack Damage | Raw Hearts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sharpness I | +1.25 | 9.25 | 4.625 |
| Sharpness II | +2.50 | 10.50 | 5.25 |
| Sharpness III | +3.75 | 11.75 | 5.875 |
| Sharpness IV | +5.00 | 13.00 | 6.50 |
| Sharpness V | +6.25 | 14.25 | 7.125 |
How Minecraft Applies Armor Reduction (Real Damage to Players)
The raw 14.25 damage number is only the start. When you hit a player, Minecraft reduces damage based on the target’s armor value and, for newer models, armor toughness.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The reduction model uses a fraction:
Damage multiplier = 1 - ( (armor 0.04 + toughness 0.06) / (1 + armor 0.04 + toughness 0.06) )
Then:
Final damage = raw damage × multiplier
Critical Hits: The Biggest Jump in Actual Damage
Critical hits (when you jump/fall timing + cooldown conditions are met) multiply the attack. The critical multiplier is typically ×1.5 on the raw attack damage.
So with netherite + Sharpness V:
- Critical raw damage = 14.25 × 1.5 = 21.375
- Critical raw hearts = 21.375 ÷ 2 = 10.6875 hearts (again, before armor)
Then armor reduction applies to the critical raw damage just like normal hits.

Practical Examples (Common Targets and Armor Setups)
The easiest way to predict fights is to run the armor math for the armor you expect to face.

Below, all “damage to health” values are shown in hearts as well, so you can match what you see in combat.
Example: Hitting a Fully Armored Player in Netherite
A full netherite armor set provides armor = 60 and toughness = 8 (4 × 15 armor? No—Minecraft’s per-piece values total to the standard 60 and toughness 8 for netherite).
Compute the damage multiplier:
- armor × 0.04 = 60 × 0.04 = 2.4
- toughness × 0.06 = 8 × 0.06 = 0.48
- numerator = 2.4 + 0.48 = 2.88
- denominator = 1 + 2.88 = 3.88
- damage reduction fraction = 2.88 ÷ 3.88 ≈ 0.7423
- multiplier = 1 – 0.7423 ≈ 0.2577
Now apply to your sword:
- Normal hit final damage = 14.25 × 0.2577 ≈ 3.67
- Normal hearts ≈ 3.67 ÷ 2 ≈ 1.835 hearts
- Critical hit final damage = 21.375 × 0.2577 ≈ 5.51
- Critical hearts ≈ 5.51 ÷ 2 ≈ 2.755 hearts
Interpretation: Even a strong Sharpness V sword won’t one-shot full netherite players by raw damage alone. Timing (critical hits) and follow-up spacing matter.
Example: Hitting Someone in Diamond Armor
Diamond armor typically totals to armor = 20 and toughness = 2 for the whole set.
- armor × 0.04 = 20 × 0.04 = 0.8
- toughness × 0.06 = 2 × 0.06 = 0.12
- numerator = 0.8 + 0.12 = 0.92
- denominator = 1 + 0.92 = 1.92
- multiplier = 1 – (0.92 ÷ 1.92) ≈ 1 – 0.4792 ≈ 0.5208
- Normal hit = 14.25 × 0.5208 ≈ 7.42 → 3.71 hearts
- Critical hit = 21.375 × 0.5208 ≈ 11.13 → 5.56 hearts
Interpretation: Sharpness V feels dramatically stronger against diamond than against netherite because the armor multiplier is much higher.

Example: Zombies and Mobs (No Player Armor Formula)
Mobs have their own damage handling. Many mobs don’t use the same “player armor + toughness” model you’d see in PvP, and they also have different base damage, health, knockback resistance, and knockback behavior.
Practically, your netherite Sharpness V sword will usually:
- Kill most common overworld mobs faster (you’re raising raw damage from 8.0 to 14.25)
- Feel less “swing-to-swing” consistent when the mob has evasion, knockback, or knockback resistance
If you’re testing against a specific mob, test it in a controlled arena because mob damage reduction sources can differ (armor, toughness-like stats, and special-case mechanics).

Sharpness sets the damage before the rest of the combat pipeline. Several other factors can shift what you see in real fights.
Attack cooldown and sweep attacks
On Java Edition, there’s an attack cooldown system. Hitting without waiting for the cooldown to fully charge can reduce how effective your swings feel (even if the raw math still “starts” from the same weapon stats).
Sweeping attacks can add extra damage to nearby targets depending on conditions, but they don’t replace the Sharpness V base calculation for the main target.

Knockback and fire aspect (don’t change Sharpness damage directly)
Enchantments like Knockback or Fire Aspect change side effects: spacing and burn damage (Fire Aspect), not the Sharpness bonus itself. Your Sharpness V raw damage remains 14.25 for the main hit, but the fight pace changes because the target moves or takes DoT.
Java vs Bedrock: What Usually Stays the Same and What Can Differ
The Sharpness bonus model for swords is broadly consistent across editions, so Sharpness V on a netherite sword still lands at 14.25 raw damage on the common damage framework. Critical hit behavior and some combat feel can differ based on timing windows and combat tuning.
If you’re doing “exact” comparisons, confirm the edition you’re playing and test critical-hit consistency in your version. Small combat rule differences can change whether you reliably get the ×1.5 multiplier.
How to Verify the Damage on Your World
You don’t need guesswork. You can validate your exact sword stats and then measure outcomes on controlled targets.
Check enchant level and weapon tier
- Open your inventory.
- Hover the netherite sword to see tooltip lines for Sharpness V.
- Confirm it’s a netherite sword (not a different weapon type like an axe).
- Write down the other relevant enchants (e.g., Smite, Fire Aspect) so you can ignore their side effects during tests.
Use a test environment (training dummy test)
- Create a flat arena or platform.
- Use targets with known armor sets (e.g., spawn in an NPC or use a second player with full armor you choose).
- Start with normal hits (no jumping for criticals) so you can isolate the armor reduction.
- Repeat with consistent critical-hit conditions once your baseline is measured.
Use debug tools and damage indicators (where available)
Depending on your setup, damage indicators, hit particles, and server-side behavior can help you confirm whether you’re doing normal hits or getting critical multipliers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon Mistakes and Troubleshooting
Mistake: Confusing weapon name with enchant level
A sword can be “sharp” in common language without being Sharpness V. If the tooltip says Sharpness III, your raw damage is different (11.75), and your armor math won’t match the Sharpness V results.

Mistake: Expecting Sharpness to add hearts after armor
Sharpness V gives +6.25 raw damage. But what you see in hearts is the final damage after armor reduction. Against netherite armor, even 14.25 raw damage turns into only about 3.67 final damage per normal hit (roughly 1.84 hearts).
Troubleshooting: Damage looks too low or too high
Try these checks in order:
- Confirm Sharpness level in the sword tooltip (it must say Sharpness V).
- Confirm the weapon is a sword (axes use different base damage).
- Test against the same armor set every time (netherite vs diamond changes results heavily).
- Separate critical hits from normal hits by either jumping intentionally or staying still between swings.
- Check for extra damage from other mechanics: potion effects, lingering damage, sweeps, or special enchantments you might have forgotten.
FAQ
Does a Sharpness V netherite sword one-shot a fully armored player?
Usually no. Against full netherite, one normal hit is about 1.84 hearts (after armor). Even a critical hit is about 2.76 hearts after armor, so multiple hits are required.
What is the raw damage of Sharpness V on a netherite sword?
The raw attack damage is 14.25, which equals 7.125 hearts before armor reduction. Critical hits raise it to about 21.375 raw damage.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How many hits does it take to kill a player in diamond armor?
Using the diamond armor example (about 3.71 hearts per normal hit), it’s typically around 3 hits (since players have 10 hearts). Critical hits can reduce that to roughly 2 hits depending on exact health remaining and whether you land only normal or also critical swings.
Do enchantments like Fire Aspect change the Sharpness V damage number?
They don’t change the Sharpness V portion of the main hit. Fire Aspect adds burn damage over time, which increases total time-to-kill, but the immediate Sharpness V raw hit remains the same.
Bottom Line
A “Sharp 5” netherite sword (Sharpness V) deals 14.25 raw damage per normal hit, which is 7.125 hearts before armor reduction. If you land a critical hit, the raw damage becomes 21.375.
After armor, results change dramatically—especially versus full netherite. Expect normal hits to feel far smaller (about 1.84 hearts each) unless you mix in critical hits and good positioning.
