For a party appetizer before dinner, plan about 1–2 oz (28–57 g) of cheese per person. If cheese is the meal, start with about 4–6 oz (113–170 g) per person. For tastings, the format matters: a cheese-and-wine tasting may call for 100–125 g per person, while a substantial cheese, cracker, and fruit tasting may call for about 250 g. These are planning ranges, not a universal standard.
How much cheese per person?
Choose the amount based on whether cheese is a small course, a grazing option, or the main event. Published recommendations vary because they describe different kinds of gatherings.

How to calculate the total amount
- Decide whether you are serving an appetizer, a grazing spread, a tasting, or a meal.
- Choose a per-person figure from the matching range. Move toward the lower end when other substantial food is available and toward the higher end when cheese is the focus.
- Multiply the chosen amount by the number of guests. For 12 guests, 2 oz each is 24 oz (1.5 lb) total; 4 oz each is 48 oz (3 lb) total.
- Divide that total among the cheeses you plan to serve. Three to five varieties is a practical assortment; the amount of cheese is the total across all varieties, not the per-person amount for each one. Academy of Cheese and Good Cheese.
Why cheese portion recommendations differ
A light appetizer before dinner, a cocktail-hour grazing board, a guided tasting, and a cheese-only meal are not interchangeable occasions. Even recommendations for a board as the main event vary: Lady & Larder suggests 4 oz per person, while Castello suggests 7–8 oz for a cheese board serving as a meal. Treat the ranges as advice for different formats, not a single exact rule.

There is no established universal percentage to subtract for crackers, fruit, meat, or other accompaniments. Let the amount of other substantial food guide your choice within the range rather than applying an invented discount. A substantial tasting that includes crackers and fruit can still call for about 250 g per person in guidance from Dairy Farmers of Canada and BC Dairy.

How many cheeses should you offer?
Three to five cheeses is a practical range for a party board or tasting, according to Good Cheese and Academy of Cheese. For variety, an Academy of Cheese example spans hard aged, semi-soft, blue, and bloomy-rind cheeses, with goat’s milk cheese as an option. It is one possible mix, not a required checklist.
Ask a cheesemonger about seasonal choices and tasting notes if you want help building an assortment; Whole Foods Market also recommends seeking this kind of guidance in its cheese guide. A serving board can help with presentation, but it does not change how much cheese to buy.
