That is a practical target, not a universal minimum: official recommendations range from 15 Mbps for Netflix to 25 Mbps for Disney+, while YouTube recommends 20 Mbps sustained for 4K UHD. Add extra capacity for other household users and activities.
What internet speed do services recommend for 4K?
The figures below are per-stream recommendations from each service or device maker, not guarantees that your internet plan will deliver that speed consistently to your TV. Services encode and deliver video differently, so the figures are not a single technical requirement.

| Service or device | 4K recommendation | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | 15 Mbps or higher | Netflix recommends a stable connection for UHD 4K. Its guidance also lists 3 Mbps or higher for 720p HD and 5 Mbps or higher for 1080p FHD. Netflix Help Center |
| YouTube | 20 Mbps sustained | YouTube describes its figures as approximate recommended sustained speeds; its table lists 5 Mbps for 1080p and 2.5 Mbps for 720p. YouTube Help |
| Google Chromecast Ultra | At least 20 Mbps | This is device-specific guidance. Google also requires compatible 4K hardware and content, and a strong Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. Google Chromecast Help |
| Disney+ | 25 Mbps | Disney+ recommends this for 4K UHD and warns that low or inconsistent speeds can affect streaming quality. Its help page displays a date of 2024-09-30. Disney+ Help Center |
Estimate the bandwidth your household needs
Use 25 Mbps per simultaneous 4K stream as a cautious planning allowance, then leave room for other traffic. The totals below are simple calculations from that allowance, not additional official recommendations.

|---|---|
| 1 | About 25 Mbps |
| 2 | About 50 Mbps |
| 3 | About 75 Mbps |
Allow more for video calls, downloads, online games, software updates, and people using the connection on other devices. This matters especially when actual speeds fluctuate. An advertised plan speed is not necessarily the speed consistently available at the television.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Check whether your connection is fast enough
- Count the number of 4K videos likely to play at the same time, and use roughly 25 Mbps per stream as a planning starting point.
- Measure the connection near the TV or streaming device. Netflix says you can check with Fast.com or the network check in its app on supported TV devices.
- Test under representative conditions, including the household’s usual activity. A result taken when nobody else is online may not reflect available speed during a busy evening.
- Compare the measured speed and its consistency with the recommendation for the service you are watching. A single speed-test result does not guarantee steady playback.
Why a fast connection may still not show 4K
Internet speed is only one requirement. The service, subscription, title, geography, device, browser, and display connection can each affect whether 4K is available. Check support for the specific content and setup rather than assuming that every title or screen offers 4K.
For Chromecast Ultra, Google’s checklist calls for a 4K-compatible HDTV, an HDMI port supporting HDCP 2.2 and 60 frames per second, 4K programming from a content provider, a strong Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, and a high-speed HDMI cable shorter than 1.8 m. Those are Chromecast Ultra requirements, not universal requirements for every streaming device. YouTube also notes that playback quality can depend on the device or browser; its guidance says HD playback in a browser is unavailable except in Safari for HD streaming.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Troubleshoot buffering or missing 4K
- Playback buffers: Check the service’s recommendation and measure speed close to the TV. Account for other users and devices, then test again when household traffic is representative.
- Wi-Fi speed varies: Try the device nearer the router, or test Ethernet if both the device and router support it. YouTube says a wired connection may help, and Google lists Wi-Fi or Ethernet for Chromecast Ultra; neither guarantees a fix for every slow connection.
- Speed is consistently below the service recommendation on a reliable wired connection: Contact your internet service provider or compare available plans. A cable or other accessory cannot increase the bandwidth delivered by the ISP.
- The 4K option is missing: Check the title, subscription, device, browser, display, and HDMI path for 4K support. For Chromecast Ultra, verify the device-specific display and HDCP 2.2 requirements.
If both ends support wired networking and Wi-Fi is inconsistent, an Ethernet cable is one option to test. It is not a necessary 4K purchase and will not raise the speed supplied by your internet plan.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you mean keeping a prerecorded YouTube live stream running 24/7 rather than watching a 4K video at home, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
