Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePlan for sustained upload capacity above your stream’s bitrate—not just an internet plan’s advertised download speed. Twitch’s general guidance is to have upload speed equal to your configured bitrate plus 30%; that is a planning margin, not a guarantee. The right bitrate depends on the streaming platform, resolution, frame rate and codec, and your connection must hold steady to the platform’s ingest server.
Start with the stream bitrate, then leave headroom
Your encoder’s configured bitrate is the main part of the stream’s upload load. As a practical rule, Twitch recommends upload speed equal to the configured bitrate plus 30%. For a stream set to 6 Mbps, that works out to about 7.8 Mbps of sustained upload capacity.
That margin is guidance for planning, not a promise that a connection will remain stable. Other devices or applications using the connection, Wi-Fi conditions and the route to the selected ingest server can affect whether your available upload holds up during a broadcast. A speed test is useful, but a single result does not prove that the connection can sustain the stream for its full duration.
Use the platform’s bitrate guidance for your target
There is no single upload-speed figure for every live stream. First choose the resolution, frame rate and codec your encoder will send, then use the destination platform’s guidance for that combination. The following are YouTube’s current H.264 recommended bitrates, as accessed in 2026:

| YouTube output target | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not universal minimums for every platform or codec. YouTube also provides AV1 and H.265 bitrate ranges, expressed as minimums and maximums rather than the same H.264 recommendation figures. Use the guidance for the codec you actually select.
Is 10 Mbps upload enough to stream?
It depends on the stream bitrate and what else is using the connection. For a 1080p30 YouTube stream, the H.264 recommendation is 10 Mbps, so a connection with only 10 Mbps of available sustained upload leaves no headroom above that bitrate. For Twitch’s general-practice margin, a 6 Mbps stream calls for about 7.8 Mbps upload; that example does not establish a recommended bitrate for every Twitch resolution or quality setting.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For YouTube 1080p60 H.264, the recommended bitrate is 12 Mbps. Applying Twitch’s 30% margin to that number gives 15.6 Mbps as a conservative planning illustration, not a YouTube requirement: YouTube does not specify that figure as its required upload speed. In each case, compare the stream’s target with stable upload capacity actually available to the streaming device, not the connection’s download result.
What changes the bandwidth you need?
- Resolution: Higher output resolutions generally call for higher bitrates. Use the platform’s recommendation for your selected resolution.
- Frame rate: A higher frame rate can increase the bitrate target and requires more encoding power. Twitch notes both considerations in its broadcasting guidance.
- Codec: Bitrate guidance varies by codec. Do not apply YouTube’s H.264 figures as though they were the AV1 or H.265 ranges.
- Encoder capacity: Your computer or encoder must be able to produce the chosen settings consistently, as well as send them.
- Available upload and network route: The advertised plan speed does not by itself establish that the route to the selected ingest server will remain stable. Competing upload activity at home can also reduce capacity available to the streaming device.
Test the actual setup before going live
- Check upload speed. Run a speed test on the connection and device you intend to use for the broadcast. Treat the result as a check, not a guarantee of sustained performance.
- Choose the platform and output settings. Select the resolution, frame rate and codec, then configure the platform-recommended bitrate for that combination.
- Run a representative test stream. Use the motion and audio you expect in the actual broadcast. A test with little movement may not reveal problems that appear with your real content.
- Watch stream health. Check the encoder and platform health indicators during the test and during the broadcast. YouTube recommends representative pre-stream testing and monitoring stream health.
- Compare wired and Wi-Fi connections if needed. If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, test over wired Ethernet. A cable can help isolate a local wireless problem; it cannot increase your ISP-provided capacity or guarantee reliability.
Fix dropped frames or intermittent disconnections
OBS identifies dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as signs of a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. A nominally adequate speed-test result does not rule out that kind of problem.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Frames drop or the stream disconnects: Check encoder and platform health indicators, then investigate the connection to the ingest server. OBS recommends checking that network path; Twitch points streamers to Twitch Inspector for stream troubleshooting.
- The configured bitrate is close to available upload: Recheck the platform’s bitrate guidance and the upload capacity available during the stream. Reduce competing upload use or select a lower output target if the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate.
- Wi-Fi appears unstable: Compare a test over wired Ethernet with the same settings. If the wired test is stable, the local wireless link may be contributing; if not, the cable has not increased the capacity of the ISP connection.
- The stream struggles at higher resolution or frame rate: Confirm that the selected bitrate matches the platform’s guidance and that the encoder can sustain the settings. Twitch notes that higher frame rates require more encoding power.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud rather than requiring your home computer and connection to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
