How Much Are Meteorites Worth? What Affects Their Value?

Meteorites have no standard price. Type and rarity matter most, while classification, provenance, weight, condition, and appearance shape a specimen’s collector value.

Meteorites have no standard price: value depends first on what kind it is and how scarce it is, then on its identification, provenance, size, condition, preparation, and appearance. Rare lunar and Martian specimens and some other achondrites generally command more per gram than ordinary chondrites and most iron meteorites. Without a reliable identification and a comparison with similar material, there is no responsible way to estimate a particular rock’s value.

Why meteorites have no single price

Meteorites are commonly priced by weight, but price per gram is only a useful comparison when the specimens are genuinely comparable. Two pieces with the same mass may differ substantially in type, rarity, documentation, condition, and collector appeal. A seller’s asking price also does not prove that a buyer paid that amount.

NASA groups meteorites into stony, iron, and stony-iron categories. Stony-iron meteorites are uncommon, while more than 95% of meteorites observed to fall are stony, according to NASA Johnson Space Center. These broad categories help explain differences in collector interest; they do not determine a specimen’s price by themselves.

What affects a meteorite’s value?

Type and rarity

Type is a major driver. Washington University in St. Louis notes that rare lunar and Martian meteorites, along with some other achondrites, generally have higher per-gram prices than ordinary chondrites and most irons. Rarity and availability matter: a scarce type may attract more interest, but that does not produce a fixed price or guarantee a sale.

Washington University’s lunar meteorite information describes a broad span of online sample prices linked to rarity. Those examples are not a live market survey or verified set of completed-sale comparables, so they should not be treated as a current appraisal.

Classification, name, and provenance

A formal classification and official name can help establish what a specimen is and may increase its value. Provenance—the documented history of where and how it was found, handled, and transferred—also helps a buyer assess confidence in the specimen. NASA describes scientific evidence used to establish origin, including compositional comparisons and, for Martian material, trapped gas that matches measurements of the Martian atmosphere (NASA Science).

A seller-provided certificate by itself is not conclusive scientific identification. Documentation is most useful when it can be checked against a recognized classification, named fall or find, or credible expert assessment.

Mass, piece size, condition, and preparation

Weight matters because specimens are often priced by the gram, but total mass alone is not a valuation method. Piece size, physical condition, and preparation affect how attractive and useful a specimen is to collectors. Washington University warns that poor preparation can diminish collector value.

Appearance, quality, and history

Aesthetic appeal and quality can distinguish otherwise similar material. A specimen’s documented history can matter as well. University educational material identifies scarcity, availability, size, appearance, quality, and history among factors that influence price; it does not establish a standardized formula for weighing them.

How to compare prices responsibly

Use price-per-gram comparisons only after checking that the pieces are similar in the ways that matter. Compare:

General educational price ranges found in university material are not necessarily current or representative market averages. No dated, representative current price-per-gram figure or completed-sale average is established by the cited sources, so a broad range should not be presented as a reliable estimate for a specific specimen.

If you think you found a meteorite

Do not infer value from a description, photograph, or magnet test. The USGS explains that some stony meteorites may not hold a magnet, and that dense black- or red-streaking rocks are likely to contain common iron minerals. UCLA also notes exceptions to simple magnetic expectations (USGS; UCLA Meteorite Museum).

Before seeking an expert opinion, record the specimen’s weight, find location and circumstances, condition, and any existing documentation or classification. Contact a university or museum meteorite specialist; UCLA also suggests a state geological survey, college or university, or natural history museum. An expert identification can establish whether it is a meteorite and what kind it is, but a specific valuation still requires comparison with similar documented material.
