AI is unlikely to eliminate the need for managed service providers (MSPs), but it will change which work they do, how they deliver it and what clients will pay them to manage. The strongest opportunity is not simply adding AI tools: it is turning automation into reliable service capacity while building expertise in integration, security, governance and ongoing support.
Will AI replace MSPs?
Not as a whole, but it can automate particular tasks and reshape some roles. Gartner’s July 2026 abstract says organizations still need service-provider expertise to govern AI, manage risk, integrate systems and scale adoption. That is an analyst assessment of the continuing need for expertise—not a guarantee that no MSP, job or service task will be displaced. Gartner’s analysis

The distinction matters: clients may need fewer manual steps in routine operations, but they still need systems that work together, safeguards that fit their risks and people who can take responsibility when automation gets something wrong. MSPs that depend mainly on repetitive labor may face pressure; those able to manage the surrounding systems and outcomes have a different value proposition.
Why growth is getting harder for MSPs
In Kaseya’s vendor-published 2026 survey, 71% of respondents named acquiring new customers as their top challenge. The share reporting typical annual customer spending above $25,000 was 41%, down from 75% the previous year. These are survey results, not universal market statistics, but they point to a difficult combination: more pressure to win customers and less reported high-spend business. The same release says the share of respondents reporting difficulty hiring skilled technicians rose from 9% to 16% year over year. That makes capacity and delivery design relevant to growth: an MSP cannot reliably expand merely by assuming it can hire at the same pace as demand rises.
The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology estimated 11,492 UK MSPs and an estimated 12% compound annual growth rate through 2027. Those are dated, UK-specific market-study estimates, not a current global forecast; the department also cautions that its figures are indicative because the sector lacks a formal Standard Industrial Classification code and the study used an experimental identification method. How AI can change the economics of MSP growth
Automating repetitive triage, patching or monitoring can allow a team to handle more work with existing capacity. That is a plausible capacity benefit, not a promise of headcount reductions, higher margins or automatic growth. The result depends on implementation, exceptions, oversight and whether the service can be delivered consistently.

Kaseya reports that 53% of surveyed MSPs used AI to automate ticketing, patching and monitoring, while more than half had automated only about a quarter of their workload. This suggests adoption is underway but still limited for many respondents. Because the findings come from a vendor-published survey, they should not be treated as a census of MSPs. For an MSP, the business question is not just “What can we automate?” It is “Which work can we make more repeatable without weakening service quality, and what expertise remains valuable to the client?” Human review, context, approval and escalation remain important wherever mistakes carry security, operational or compliance consequences.
What AI services are customers asking MSPs for?
In Kaseya’s 2026 survey, 48% of respondents ranked AI and automation as the top client need for the year, but only 13% reported meaningful revenue from those services. The difference is a useful warning: expressed interest does not automatically become a viable paid offer. A separate global survey released by KPMG International in April 2026 found that 56% of buyers cited AI management as their top managed-services investment priority over the next two years, followed by cybersecurity at 33%. The survey included 1,224 business leaders from large organizations across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific, as well as 10 interviews. It reflects large-company buyer priorities, not a poll of MSP owners or small businesses. These findings support several areas for MSPs to assess, rather than a universal service menu:
- AI management and governance: help clients define appropriate use, oversight, risk controls and ongoing accountability.
- Integration and adoption: connect AI-enabled systems to existing tools and workflows, then support their use at scale.
- Security and continuity: manage cybersecurity, backup and business continuity alongside new AI-related risks and dependencies.
- Internal service automation: improve the provider’s own ticketing, patching or monitoring before deciding whether that capability can become a client-facing service.
Where MSPs are already finding growth
AI is not the only growth path. Kaseya reports that 71% of survey respondents saw year-over-year revenue growth in cybersecurity and 50% in business continuity and disaster recovery. These are vendor-survey findings, not a guarantee of growth for an individual provider, but they show that security and resilience are concrete service areas to consider alongside AI management. The UK DSIT study also identifies security provision and compliance support among MSP activities, within the limits of its UK-specific market analysis. Pairing AI-related support with established security and continuity capabilities may fit clients’ needs better than selling “AI” as an isolated feature.

There is no survey-backed formula that fits every provider. These decision points help distinguish a durable service from a tool rollout that is difficult to price or support.

Define the operational or risk problem the service addresses before choosing technology. Specify what is included, what is out of scope, who approves consequential actions and how exceptions reach a person. A clear scope helps clients understand what they are buying and helps the MSP estimate ongoing effort.

Choose between a project and ongoing management
A one-time implementation can establish a system, but it does not by itself answer who will monitor it, manage changes, handle incidents or revisit controls as the client’s environment evolves. An ongoing service can cover those responsibilities where the MSP has the expertise and the client wants continuing support. The two models should not be presented as interchangeable.
Keep automation and oversight explicit
Map which steps can run automatically and where a person must review, approve or intervene. The appropriate boundary depends on the client’s context and the consequences of error. Make escalation responsibilities part of the service design rather than an afterthought.
Match the offer to delivery readiness
Client interest is not evidence that an MSP can deliver a service repeatably. Before expanding sales, determine whether the team can support the integrations, security, governance and exception handling the offer requires. If a capability is not yet mature, a focused or partner-supported offer may be more credible than claiming broad expertise.
Decide whether to specialize or broaden the portfolio
Some providers may develop deeper expertise in AI management, security or integration; others may begin with a narrower service and add capabilities as delivery experience grows. MSP Global’s July 2025 survey of more than 300 MSP professionals identified automation as a primary growth focus, while also highlighting trust and competitive tension as barriers to collaboration. What the survey evidence does—and does not—show
Other vendor-sponsored findings add evidence of opportunity but should be read with the same care. OpenText reported that 92% of surveyed MSPs saw business growth from AI interest and 96% expected that trend to continue that year. These figures describe a vendor-sponsored global survey, not an independently verified forecast or a guarantee that any provider will grow. OpenText’s September 2025 release
Taken together, the sources describe direction and reported experience: AI adoption is changing service operations; buyers report interest in AI management and cybersecurity; and MSPs report both growth opportunities and difficulty acquiring customers or hiring. They do not establish that all MSPs can monetize AI, that every reported percentage applies across markets, or that AI will never replace particular tasks or providers.
