Movies tell a story through a selected sequence of images and sounds; video games can also make action, exploration and rules part of the story’s experience. When the same material moves between them, an adaptation has to decide what the audience will see, what a player may do, how much time the story needs and which parts of its meaning belong in scenes versus playable systems. The strongest adaptations do not simply copy every plot beat: they reshape the material for the medium they are entering.
What changes when a story moves between a movie and a game?
The central difference is the audience’s role. A film presents a sequence for viewers to interpret. A game may ask players to act inside a world, explore it, solve problems or experience story through the rules of play. That distinction affects more than whether someone presses buttons: it can alter viewpoint, pacing, character access, plot structure and the way a story communicates its themes. Adaptation studies describe these relationships as more complex than transferring a plot from one container to another; see the Oxford Handbook’s discussion of videogame adaptation.

“Game” does not automatically mean open-ended or choice-driven. Some games give players substantial control over decisions; others guide them through a largely fixed sequence. Even a linear game, however, can make movement, timing, combat, puzzle-solving or exploration part of how the player encounters the story. A movie usually fixes the timing and order of what is shown, though a director can still control suspense, withheld information and point of view.
So the useful question is not simply whether an adaptation is faithful. It is: what does this version preserve, what does it change, and what can the new medium do with the story that the old one could not?

How does audience agency change the story?
Movies guide attention; games may let players participate
A movie controls the order in which scenes appear and the amount of time spent on each one. Viewers can interpret what they see, but they do not normally decide whether a character opens a door, searches a room or takes a different route. The filmmaker can direct attention through framing, editing, sound and performance.
A game can place the player in the position of carrying out actions. The player may move through a location, handle a task, choose when to advance or discover details in an order the game permits. These actions can make the audience feel responsible for progress, even when the main plot is fixed. Agency comes in degrees: it might mean control over movement or tactics rather than the power to change the ending.
This difference matters because a game can communicate through what the player does, not only through what a character says or what a cutscene shows. Repeating a task, navigating a dangerous space or deciding how to approach an obstacle can shape the experience of a story. A film adaptation cannot reproduce that participation simply by showing a character perform the same action. It has to decide what the action meant to the player and find a screen-language equivalent, or intentionally let that part go.

Player choice is not the same as branching plot
It is easy to assume a game adaptation must preserve choices and multiple endings. That is only relevant when those features are central to the particular source. Many games have a defined sequence of major events, and their interactivity lies in how players move through that sequence. Scholarship on adaptations of Hamlet discusses the relationship between interactivity and player agency without reducing it to a single model; see “The Time Is out of Joint: Interactivity and Player Agency in Videogame Adaptations of Hamlet”.
When a game does offer consequential choices, a screen version still has to make a structural decision. It can select one route as the film’s canonical story, combine outcomes, invent a new path or use an episodic format to explore a different arrangement. Each choice changes what the adaptation says about responsibility, consequence and character. Keeping every branch is not automatically more faithful if doing so produces a confusing or dramatically inert screen story.

Why do viewpoint and access to characters change?
Games often limit what players know to what their character sees, hears or discovers. That can create suspense and make information feel earned. Yet the camera and narrative in a game are not always identical to the protagonist’s perspective: a game may include cinematic scenes, shifts of viewpoint or information presented outside direct control. The adaptation question is therefore specific: whose experience organizes this version, and what does the audience know at each point?
A film or television adaptation can leave the game protagonist’s viewpoint to show another character’s experience, expand an event that was offscreen, or arrange information differently. In a PBS conversation about adapting The Last of Us, co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin describes the opportunities that can come from seeing events differently from the game. That is a useful example of changing access rather than merely reproducing what the player saw; the interview is available from PBS / Austin PBS.
Changing viewpoint can deepen a character or make an unseen consequence legible, but it also gives something up. If a game’s tension depends on the player’s restricted knowledge, showing the source of danger too early may weaken suspense. Conversely, staying rigidly with the protagonist may leave a screen audience without context that the game could deliver through exploration. Adaptors must weigh the dramatic purpose of a restriction against the new medium’s needs.
How do pacing and scale affect adaptation?
A game can contain extended play, optional exploration, repeated attempts and side stories alongside its main plot. A feature film has a much tighter span in which to establish characters, create change and reach an ending. The challenge is not just cutting scenes: it is deciding which experiences are essential to the story and which exist primarily because the audience is playing.
That can mean compressing a journey into a few scenes, combining functions that were spread across separate missions, or omitting optional material. It may also mean expanding a moment that was brief in the game because the screen story needs time to establish a relationship or consequence. A change in duration is not inherently a betrayal; it is a response to the different rhythm of watching and playing.

In an Activision Blizzard newsroom conversation about movies and games, senior writer Sydney King describes the balancing act between fan expectations and the time available to condense extensive game experiences. King says: “There’s just so many expectations from fans that have loved these games and spent hundreds of hours with them, and then there’s the time issue, where you can’t condense all of that into a movie.” The full discussion appears in “How are movies and games influencing each other?”.

For viewers familiar with the game, an omitted sequence may be emotionally important because they spent time inside it. For newcomers, the same sequence may not carry that accumulated meaning. An adaptation has to serve both groups without assuming that recognition alone will create drama. It can preserve the relationship, turning point or thematic idea behind a long game section while changing the events used to express it.
What should an adaptation preserve, change or leave out?
There is no universal checklist of scenes a successful adaptation must retain. A more useful approach is to identify the source’s defining elements and ask what function each one serves. A plot event may establish a character’s fear; a location may make a world feel isolated; a repeated task may make players feel the cost of survival. The adaptation can preserve that function even when it changes the literal event.
- Keep what carries the story’s identity. This may be a central relationship, a dilemma, a setting, a tone or a distinctive conflict—not necessarily every encounter in its original order.
- Change what depends on the old medium. A game’s optional detour may become a concise scene, while a film’s explanatory dialogue might become exploration or environmental detail in a game.
- Check what a cut removes. If a scene is omitted, ask whether its character development, information or emotional consequence appears elsewhere. If it does not, the change may leave a genuine gap.
- Make additions earn their place. New scenes, characters or playable sections should create a useful perspective, deepen a conflict or make the format work—not merely increase the amount of material.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s discussion of PlayStation Productions presents The Last of Us and Gran Turismo as contrasting adaptation situations, illustrating that a strategy depends on the source and the screen experience being pursued. The article expresses the principle this way: “It’s all about using the source material as inspiration versus as a rule book.” The statement appears in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s “Origins – PlayStation Productions”. It does not mean that fidelity is irrelevant; it means fidelity can involve preserving purpose rather than obeying a scene-by-scene template.
How does a movie become a playable game?
Film-to-game adaptation has the reverse problem. A movie’s sequence of scenes can be reproduced in a game, but replaying that sequence is not enough to make a satisfying game. The designers need to decide what the player will do and how those actions connect to the film’s world, characters or themes. A game may use the movie’s plot as a spine, or it may tell a parallel story, explore another part of the setting or turn a brief screen moment into a playable scenario.

Bond University’s research record on film-to-game adaptation points to concepts including narrative form, worldbuilding, seriality and interactivation. Its examples include GoldenEye 007, Blade Runner, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and LEGO adaptations. These cases help show why the source’s world and playable potential can matter as much as its exact sequence of events; see the Bond University Research Portal record.
Plot recreation is one option, not the whole design brief
Recreating recognizable scenes can help connect a game to a film, but the player needs an active role between those moments. A designer might turn a chase into a sequence of movement and decisions, or use a setting to support exploration beyond what the film shows. The important test is whether play adds a meaningful experience. A familiar character or location is not, by itself, a game mechanic.
Worldbuilding and serial stories create room to expand
A film may imply more about its setting than its running time allows it to show. A game can let players investigate spaces, encounter additional characters or follow a related thread. That expansion should remain coherent with the source without assuming that the film’s plot is the only story the world can support. Seriality—the way stories continue or connect across works—can also shape what a game chooses to adapt or extend.
Interactivity changes how meaning is delivered
A film can show a character making a choice and then show its result. A game may make the player perform an action, experience a constraint or decide how to proceed. That difference can change the audience’s relationship to responsibility and consequence. It is not enough to insert a button prompt into a film scene: the play should contribute to how the story is understood, while the narrative should give the player a reason to care about the actions the game asks them to take.

How can you judge whether the changes work?
Instead of scoring an adaptation by the number of copied scenes, compare what each medium is trying to accomplish. A useful review can ask the same set of questions in either direction:

- What is the core experience? Identify the relationship, conflict, atmosphere or idea that makes the source distinctive.
- Who controls the order and pace? Note whether the audience watches a fixed sequence or whether players act, explore or encounter events at their own pace.
- Whose perspective shapes the story? Track what the audience knows, what remains hidden and whether the adaptation shifts attention to another character.
- What work does the medium perform? In a game, identify what movement, rules, exploration or decisions contribute. In a film, consider what framing, editing, sound and performance communicate.
- What has been compressed, added or removed? Judge the consequences of those changes: do they clarify the story, create a worthwhile new angle or leave an important gap?
- Does the ending fit this version? A changed route or structure can lead to a different ending, but it should resolve the conflicts this adaptation has actually established.
This framework avoids treating either medium as the definitive version. A movie can be an effective interpretation without recreating a player’s exact route. A game can be a strong adaptation without turning every scene into a playable replica. The standard is whether its choices make sense for the experience it is creating.
Why do adaptations frustrate fans—and what counts as faithfulness?
Fans often bring detailed memories of a game’s characters, locations and sequences. They may also bring memories of how long they spent with it or what they discovered for themselves. A screen adaptation inevitably selects from that material; compressing a long experience can make a beloved event disappear, while adding a new perspective can make the source feel different in retrospect.
“Faithful” can therefore mean several things: retaining the plot, preserving characterization, recreating the tone, keeping a world consistent or maintaining the emotional effect. Those goals can conflict. Preserving every plot beat may flatten pacing; changing a viewpoint may alter suspense; reproducing a movie’s scenes exactly in a game may leave little room for meaningful play. A precise discussion names the kind of faithfulness at stake and weighs it against the new work’s goals.

Does the new version make a character’s motivation clearer but reduce mystery? Does it preserve a setting while replacing the original conflict? Does it give players freedom at the expense of a tightly controlled dramatic arc? Those trade-offs are more informative than a simple verdict that the adaptation did or did not copy the source.
A practical way to compare the two versions
If you are comparing a particular movie and game, make a short map rather than relying on memory of isolated scenes. Start with the premise and central relationship, then note the major turning points in each version. For each difference, record whether it changes plot, viewpoint, pacing, agency or the way the world is communicated.
- For a game adapted to screen: mark which playable experiences become scenes, which are compressed or removed, and whether the screen version gives attention to events outside the player character’s viewpoint.
- For a movie adapted to a game: identify which scenes become playable, what the player does between them, and whether the game expands the setting or follows a parallel thread.
- For either direction: separate a changed event from a changed purpose. Two versions may use different events to produce a similar emotional or thematic effect.
That comparison makes disagreement more concrete. One viewer may value the original plot order; another may prefer a new character perspective. One player may want the film’s world to be explorable; another may judge the game by whether its mechanics express the story. Naming the criteria clarifies what each version is preserving and why its medium matters.
