MLB free agency opens after the World Series, but becoming a free agent does not guarantee a contract or set a universal date by which a player must sign. Eligible players first have a five-day window to negotiate only with their former club; after that, they can negotiate and sign with any team. Players can also reach free agency when their club declines to tender them a contract.
When does MLB free agency open?
MLB’s 2025–26 offseason calendar says eligible players become free agents on the first day after the World Series. For the next five days, known as the quiet period, they may negotiate only with their former club. Once that period ends, they may negotiate and sign with any club. The exact calendar dates vary by offseason.

How can a player become a free agent?
Eligibility after club control
Players who qualify for free agency after completing the required service time enter the market through the ordinary offseason process. The five-day quiet period applies to negotiations with their former club.
Non-tender
A non-tender is a separate route. A player on a 40-man roster who remains under club control and has not signed for the coming season generally must be tendered a contract by the applicable deadline. Under the 2022–26 collective bargaining agreement, MLB lists that deadline as the last Friday before Thanksgiving. If the club does not tender a contract, the player becomes a free agent immediately, rather than waiting for the post-World Series process. See MLB’s non-tender definition.

A club may decide not to tender a player if it expects an arbitration raise to exceed the player’s projected value, or if it wants to open a spot on its 40-man roster. Non-tendered players and players who qualify through service time are both free agents, but they reached that status by different routes.
What is a qualifying offer?
A qualifying offer is an optional one-year contract offer that a club may make to an eligible impending free agent. The amount is set at the average salary of MLB’s 125 highest-paid players. A club may offer it only if the player has not received one before and spent the entire season with that organization. The player can accept the offer or reject it and continue exploring the market. MLB’s qualifying-offer rules explain the eligibility and mechanics.

For 2026, MLB set the qualifying-offer value at $22.025 million. That is a season-specific figure, not a standing amount for future years.
What rejection can mean for teams
If a player rejects a qualifying offer and signs with another club, the former club may receive a compensatory draft pick. The signing club may lose draft selections and, for some categories of clubs, international bonus-pool money. The exact consequences depend on the clubs’ classifications and the contract, so a specific signing requires checking MLB’s current rules.
Rank #3
MLB says a player who remains unsigned after the following year’s MLB Draft begins is no longer tied to that draft-pick compensation. That is a draft-compensation rule; it does not establish a universal signing deadline.
What happened in the 2025–26 offseason?
MLB reported 13 qualifying offers issued, four accepted, and six recipients signing with another club for the 2025–26 offseason. Those figures describe that offseason only; they do not predict future offer totals or player decisions. See MLB’s 2025–26 qualifying-offer results.

Why might a free agent still be unsigned?
Free-agent status means a player is eligible to negotiate under the applicable rules; it does not require a team to offer a contract or require the player to accept one by a universal date. A player may still be weighing offers or waiting for a suitable opportunity, but an individual explanation depends on current facts about that player. The sources defining the offseason process do not establish one final date by which every unsigned free agent must sign, or fully specify the status and consequences for every player who remains unsigned into or through a season. Do not assume that Opening Day automatically ends free agency.
For an individual player, check current MLB transaction records and the applicable roster, contract, and eligibility rules. In particular, distinguish the player’s route to free agency, whether the quiet period remains in effect, any qualifying-offer decision, and whether draft-related consequences still apply.

Are proposed labor changes already in effect?
No proposal should be treated as a current rule unless it has been adopted. In June 2026, MLB reported proposed labor changes that included reducing the reserve period to five years for players aged 30 or older and eliminating the qualifying-offer system. The report described proposals during collective bargaining, not adopted terms. See MLB’s June 2026 report; check the agreement’s status before relying on any proposed change.
