Mission planners calculate a planetary flyby by connecting a chosen launch and transfer path to the encounter geometry the mission needs. They first find candidate routes and dates, then determine whether the spacecraft can pass the planet at a safe altitude with the required change in direction. They model the route in greater detail, account for uncertainty and spacecraft constraints, and plan navigation corrections for flight. In a gravity assist, the planet’s gravity turns the spacecraft’s planet-relative velocity; because the planet is moving around the Sun, that turn can change the spacecraft’s Sun-relative path and energy.
What a flyby trajectory has to accomplish
A trajectory is more than a line between two planets. It is a reference path that connects mission objectives and initial conditions to the maneuvers and operating plan needed to fly the mission. The route must work for the spacecraft as well as for the desired encounter: duration, available propulsion, science geometry, communications, power, and other operating needs can all constrain the design. NASA Ames describes trajectory design as translating objectives and constraints into required maneuvers and a concept of operations.

For a flyby, the destination alone does not define success. Planners must choose when and where the spacecraft meets the planet, its incoming and outgoing direction relative to the planet, and its closest-approach geometry. Those conditions determine how much the planet can bend the path and what trajectories remain possible afterward.
How planners build and refine the route
1. Define objectives, dates, and constraints
The team specifies the target, possible launch dates, desired encounter conditions, and mission limits. A useful flyby must satisfy science goals while remaining feasible for the spacecraft and mission operations, including propulsion, communications, and power requirements.

2. Search for transfer opportunities
Planners search launch and encounter dates and calculate transfer arcs between celestial bodies. NASA’s Trajectory Browser guide describes using Lambert solutions for heliocentric transfers and includes flyby mission types. For a flyby return mission, for example, the route has a transfer to the encounter and another transfer away from it.
At this stage, a calculation is a way to find and compare candidate routes, not a guarantee that a spacecraft can fly one exactly as drawn. The candidate must still meet the encounter, safety, and operational requirements.
3. Set the encounter geometry
A first-pass calculation can treat the approach and departure as heliocentric arcs connected by a planet-centered hyperbolic pass. The spacecraft’s incoming and outgoing excess-velocity vectors relative to the planet describe the turn the encounter must produce. Planners calculate whether the required bend is possible and what closest-approach distance it entails.

Closer passage generally allows a larger gravitational turn, but the periapsis cannot be below the planet’s surface or atmosphere, and mission-specific safety constraints may demand more clearance. NASA’s Trajectory Browser guide explains how flyby periapsis is calculated from the incoming and outgoing asymptotic conditions and how infeasible cases are rejected.
4. Determine what the flyby does to the next leg
In an idealized planet-centered view, gravity changes the direction of the spacecraft’s far-field velocity while leaving its speed roughly the same. In a Sun-centered view, however, the planet is itself moving. Changing the spacecraft’s direction relative to that moving planet can increase or decrease the spacecraft’s solar-orbit energy, redirecting it toward a different next leg without a propulsion burn at closest approach.
For example, a spacecraft passing behind an orbiting planet can gain Sun-relative speed; passing ahead can give energy back. This is why the same encounter must be assessed both as a close planetary pass and as part of the larger heliocentric route. NASA’s trajectories chapter explains the gravity-assist effect.

5. Compare candidates and improve the model
There is rarely a single route that is best on every measure. Planners compare candidates across mission duration, launch and encounter timing, required propulsion, flyby altitude, science viewing geometry, and the margin available to handle navigation or maneuver errors. A shorter route, for instance, may not offer the desired encounter geometry or operational margin.

Mature designs use higher-fidelity propagation, including multiple-body gravity and other relevant effects such as solar radiation pressure and atmospheric drag where applicable. NASA Ames also describes statistical simulations that test uncertainty in orbit determination, maneuver execution, and launch-vehicle deployment.
| What planners compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Launch date and window flexibility | Constrains which transfer opportunities are available and how easily the mission can accommodate a launch delay. |
| Flight time and encounter timing | Sets the mission schedule and the timing of the science encounter. |
| Launch energy and mission delta-v | Indicates how much energy or spacecraft maneuvering the route requires. |
| Closest-approach altitude and turn geometry | Connects the flyby’s safety clearance to the gravitational bend it can produce. |
| Science viewing geometry and data-return opportunities | Determines whether the encounter supports observations and communications needs. |
| Navigation uncertainty and correction margin | Shows how much room the mission has to absorb imperfect knowledge of the path or maneuver execution. |
| Propulsion, power, communications, and thermal constraints | Checks whether the spacecraft and mission operations can support the route in practice. |
NASA’s Trajectory Browser supports searches and trades such as mission duration versus total delta-v, but it is an exploration aid rather than an exhaustive solution for every mission. Its guide notes simplifications including patched two-body calculations, discretized launch and arrival dates, and predefined trades; more complex gravity-assist strategies may not appear in its database.

Why the planned path changes during flight
The designed trajectory is a reference, not a promise that the spacecraft will remain exactly on it. Navigation teams estimate the actual position and velocity from observations, compare that estimated state with the reference path, and determine whether a correction is needed. If it is, the flight-path-control team designs a timed change in velocity, or delta-v, and passes implementation requirements to spacecraft engineering. Propellant limits and the growth of errors over time affect the available choices. NASA’s navigation chapter describes reference-trajectory design, orbit determination, and maneuvers to return toward the reference path; NASA Ames lists navigation functions including orbit determination, trajectory calculation, and maneuver planning.
Example: Cassini’s route to Saturn
Cassini used a Venus–Venus–Earth–Jupiter sequence of gravity assists before arriving at Saturn. NASA reports that this particular route took 6.7 years and covered 5 billion kilometers. Those figures describe Cassini’s itinerary, not a typical duration or distance for planetary flybys. NASA’s Cassini trajectory resource documents the route.
