Microsoft announced Magnetic Connect with the Surface Laptop Ultra on October 7, 2026, describing it as an integrated magnetic USB-C charging system. The supplied cable attaches magnetically to the laptop’s right-side USB-C port and is designed to detach easily. What MacBook MagSafe 3 does
MagSafe 3 connects to a dedicated charging port using a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. On supported MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models, USB-C or Thunderbolt can also be used for charging. Which cable or charger should you use?
For a Surface Laptop Ultra
The listed package includes the Surface USB-C Magnetic Connect Cable and a 140W USB-C power adapter, so check what came with the laptop before buying a separate cable. Microsoft also describes conventional USB-C Power Delivery and Surface Connect options across Surface models. For a MacBook

For either laptop
Do not assume that a third-party magnetic USB-C adapter reproduces Microsoft’s built-in Magnetic Connect design or functions. If using USB-C Power Delivery instead, check the manufacturer’s model-specific wattage guidance before selecting a charger.

What the official specifications do—and do not—establish
Microsoft describes Magnetic Connect as “the world’s first integrated magnetic USB‑C® charging system on a laptop.” That is Microsoft’s product claim, not an independently verified comparison. The cited official information explains the connectors and stated port functions, but does not provide comparative magnetic release-force measurements, durability tests, or head-to-head safety results. Neither system should be declared safer or more durable on the basis of those specifications alone.
