Microbes could help a Mars habitat turn crew carbon dioxide, water and waste nutrients into oxygen and edible biomass, but only as part of a tightly controlled, multi-stage life-support system. Photosynthetic organisms such as cyanobacteria and algae use light to fix carbon into organic material and release oxygen. Other biological and physicochemical processors would have to recover water, break down wastes, supply nutrients and control contaminants. Researchers are developing these linked loops; no complete microbial life-support system is operating on Mars today.
What a microbial Mars life-support system would do
A regenerative habitat would connect atmosphere, food, water and waste treatment instead of treating each output as a separate gadget. Crew members exhale carbon dioxide, consume oxygen and produce organic waste and wastewater. Photosynthetic organisms can consume some of that carbon dioxide and release oxygen while making biomass. Downstream processors would recover water and convert wastes into forms that plants or microbes can use.

Photosynthesis supplies oxygen and carbon-based material
In a simplified photosynthetic reaction, light energy drives organisms to combine carbon dioxide and water into organic compounds, releasing oxygen. Cyanobacteria and algae are attractive candidates because they grow rapidly relative to many crops and can be cultivated in closed reactors. Their biomass could be processed as food, used as a feedstock, or directed to other parts of the resource loop. The actual gas exchange would depend on culture density, light, temperature, nutrient availability and contamination control; a tank of microbes would not automatically maintain a safe cabin atmosphere.

Biomass can contribute to food, but oxygen and calories are different design targets
Some algae and cyanobacteria are edible, yet producing breathable oxygen is not the same as supplying a balanced human diet. A food subsystem would need acceptable protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, texture and microbial safety. It could combine edible microbial biomass with higher plants and stored foods. NASA’s overview of bioregenerative life support estimates that approximately 20–25 square metres of crops could provide one person’s oxygen needs and about 50 square metres could provide that person’s dietary calories. Those are approximate crop-area estimates drawn from research and experience across space agencies, not a guarantee for a Mars greenhouse or a microbial-only design. See NASA’s Bioregenerative Life Support for Humans in Space.

Waste and wastewater close the loop
Human waste contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and water, but it also contains pathogens, toxic compounds and materials that can inhibit cultures. A credible architecture therefore uses stages: solids separation, controlled microbial conversion, filtration or other polishing, nutrient recovery, and sterilisation before water or nutrients return to production units. NASA describes biological life support as combining crops and their microbiome with wastewater recycling. ESA’s MELiSSA concept similarly links microbiological cells, algae, bacteria, plants, chemicals, catalysts and bioreactors to process wastes into resources.
Which organisms are being considered?
Cyanobacteria
Cyanobacteria perform oxygenic photosynthesis and can fix carbon dioxide into organic compounds. ESA identifies Arthrospira platensis, commonly called Spirulina, among the scientific domains studied in MELiSSA. NASA has also described experiments exposing cyanobacteria and other organisms to space or Mars-like conditions. Such work demonstrates research interest and environmental testing; it does not show that an unprotected culture could live on the Martian surface or sustain a crew independently.
Algae and higher plants
Algae can grow in illuminated photobioreactors, while plants can provide edible leaves, fruits or tubers and help process carbon dioxide. Plants also bring pollination, rooting, disease and lighting requirements. A mixed system could use microbes for rapid gas exchange and nutrient conversion while reserving a controlled growing area for dietary diversity. The ratio would be an engineering decision based on crew size, available power, crop-area estimates and the acceptable amount of stored food.
Microbial processors that are not photosynthetic
Fermenters and other microbial communities could break down organic wastes, transform nitrogen compounds and support water-recovery stages. They would not replace photosynthetic oxygen production; they would make the overall loop more recoverable by turning waste streams into controlled inputs. Physical-chemical units would still be needed for separation, disinfection, gas management and emergency operation.
How ESA’s MELiSSA approach fits the idea
The European Space Agency’s MELiSSA targets and scientific domains describe a linked closed-loop strategy for food, water and oxygen. Its research uses microbial compartments, algae, bacteria, plants, catalysts, chemicals and bioreactors rather than one miracle organism. ESA’s pilot-plant account presents MELiSSA as technology development for future long-duration missions. It is not a deployed Mars habitat and should not be described as a system already running on another planet.

Integration is the central challenge. A change in one compartment can affect every other compartment: a toxic compound in wastewater can suppress an algal culture; a culture crash can remove expected oxygen production; a nutrient imbalance can reduce plant yields; and an overgrown population can alter gas composition or clog equipment. Controllers would need continuous measurements of oxygen, carbon dioxide, pressure, pH, temperature, optical density, dissolved nutrients and contaminants, with isolation valves and backup supplies.
What has actually made oxygen on Mars?
NASA’s Perseverance rover carried the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, or MOXIE. It extracted oxygen from the carbon-dioxide-rich Martian atmosphere by solid-oxide electrolysis, not by biology. NASA/JPL reported that MOXIE ran 16 times and produced 122 grams of oxygen in total. At its best reported performance, it produced 12 grams per hour at 98% purity or better. The completion announcement is dated September 6, 2023: NASA’s Oxygen-Generating Experiment MOXIE Completes Mars Mission. NASA’s instrument description is available at Perseverance Science Instruments: MOXIE.
NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy said, “MOXIE’s impressive performance shows that it is feasible to extract oxygen from Mars’ atmosphere – oxygen that could help supply breathable air or rocket propellant to future astronauts.” That statement concerns electrolysis demonstrated by MOXIE; it is not an endorsement of a biological food-and-oxygen system.
| Characteristic | Microbial or plant-based loop | MOXIE-style electrolysis |
|---|---|---|
| Primary demonstrated output | Proposed combination of oxygen, biomass, food contributions, nutrient and water processing | Oxygen from atmospheric carbon dioxide |
| Energy and inputs | Light, carbon dioxide, water, nutrients, bioreactors or growing areas, controls and processing equipment | Electrical power, Martian carbon dioxide and a solid-oxide electrolysis unit |
| Mars operating evidence | No complete integrated microbial life-support system operating on Mars has been established | 16 on-Mars runs; 122 grams total oxygen reported by NASA/JPL in 2023 |
| Food production | Potentially edible microbial biomass and crops, subject to nutrition and safety controls | None |
| System role | Could support several linked loops if biological compartments remain healthy | Single-function oxygen technology demonstration |
The comparison is therefore about function and maturity, not a declaration that one technology wins every mission requirement. Electrolysis offers a measured Mars demonstration of oxygen production; biological systems could eventually provide more than one resource but remain a development challenge.
How large could the biological system be?
NASA’s approximate figures—20–25 m² of crops per person for oxygen and around 50 m² per person for dietary calories—show why a crewed habitat would need substantial illuminated production area if it aimed to grow much of its food. “Crop area” is not the same as floor area: aisles, reservoirs, lighting, plumbing, shielding and quarantine capacity add mass and volume. Microbial photobioreactors could pack productive surfaces more densely than a field, but the cited figures do not establish a comparable area for a microbial-only system.

A baseline Mars mission discussed by NASA lasts about three years when transit and surface stay are combined. Over that duration, every kilogram of oxygen, water and food launched from Earth has a recurring logistics cost, while a local regenerative process could produce resources after landing. NASA also emphasises that future life-support systems must be highly closed and sustainable while keeping mass and power requirements low. A biological loop must therefore be judged with its lights, pumps, sensors, sterilisation hardware, spares and backup consumables included.

Unprocessed Martian regolith is not established as a ready-made agricultural soil. NASA studies have tested plant growth in amended Martian regolith simulant, not untreated Mars soil as a complete farm. The growth medium must provide physical support, oxygen, ions and liquid. It may also need nutrients, pH control, removal or immobilisation of toxic compounds, and protection from dust and perchlorate-related hazards. The NASA study is documented in Plant Growth in Amended Martian Regolith Simulant for Bioregenerative Life Support.
A practical habitat would likely import or manufacture a controlled medium and keep biological cultures physically separated from native dust. The fact that a microbe tolerates a Mars-like test condition does not prove it can complete its life cycle in open Martian conditions, nor that its product is safe to eat.
What an engineered loop would require
- Capture cabin gases. Route crew-generated carbon dioxide to photosynthetic reactors or crop chambers while maintaining independent atmospheric control.
- Supply controlled light and water. Provide lamps or filtered sunlight, circulation, temperature control and water recovery. Measure oxygen and carbon dioxide continuously rather than assuming a fixed production rate.
- Grow and harvest biomass. Keep cultures in sealed, serviceable vessels; remove a controlled fraction for food or processing so density remains within the validated operating range.
- Condition waste streams. Separate solids and liquids, reduce pathogen and toxin risks, and use microbial or physicochemical stages to release recoverable nutrients.
- Polish and sterilise recovered water. Return only water that meets the habitat’s chemical and microbiological limits. A biological loop still needs filters, sensors and disinfection.
- Balance nutrients. Feed nitrogen, phosphorus, trace elements and carbon to the compartments that need them; prevent accumulation of salts or inhibitory compounds.
- Isolate failures. Use valves, redundant reactors and stored oxygen, water and food so a contaminated or stalled culture can be quarantined without endangering the crew.
- Verify food safety. Test harvested biomass and crops for pathogens, toxins, contaminants and nutritional adequacy before serving them.
Evidence maturity: what is known and what is not
Evidence spans several distinct levels, and they should not be conflated:
- Laboratory biology: Photosynthesis, carbon fixation and microbial waste conversion are established processes under controlled terrestrial conditions.
- Integrated terrestrial development: MELiSSA’s pilot activities investigate linked compartments for future missions.
- Space exposure: NASA has reported tests of organisms and materials exposed on the International Space Station, including Mars-relevant environmental questions; see Exposed! International Space Station Tests Organisms, Materials in Space.
- Mars operation: MOXIE demonstrated electrochemical oxygen production on Mars. That is a different process from biological life support.
- Mission-scale biological closure: The available sources do not establish a full-scale, integrated microbial system on Mars that supplies a crew’s oxygen and food.
NASA’s 2022 study, ISRU: Using Biology to Produce Food and Oxygen from Resources on Mars, frames biological in-situ resource utilisation as a research direction. It does not turn the concept into a flight-qualified system.

Failure modes and recovery planning
Biological systems can fail through contamination, nutrient depletion, lighting or pump loss, temperature excursions, toxic feed compounds, genetic drift or an overly rapid change in gas composition. A culture may continue to look healthy while producing less oxygen or an unsafe biomass. Recovery planning should include independent atmospheric scrubbing and oxygen reserves, stored food, spare growth modules, sterilisation capability, and procedures for diverting waste around a failed compartment.
The cited sources establish the need for reliable, highly closed systems but do not provide a complete comparative failure-rate dataset for microbial versus physicochemical life support. It is therefore not justified to assign a precise reliability advantage to either approach. Mission designers would need long-duration tests, fault-injection trials and validated control limits before relying on biological production as a primary safety system.
What microbes could realistically contribute first
The most credible early role is as one compartment in a hybrid architecture. Electrolysis or stored supplies could guarantee minimum oxygen, while photobioreactors and crops gradually reduce resupply demand and recycle carbon and nutrients. Microbes could also help treat selected waste streams even when food production remains limited. As operating data accumulate, designers could decide whether additional reactor capacity is worth its power, shielding, maintenance and crew-time costs.
That staged approach preserves the main benefit of biology—several potential outputs from shared carbon, water and nutrient streams—without pretending that a single organism can replace every other life-support function. It also recognises the practical distinction between demonstrating a reaction, operating a pilot plant and keeping a crew safe for years.
Bottom line for Mars missions
Photosynthetic microbes could make oxygen and some food on Mars by consuming carbon dioxide, water and nutrients inside sealed, monitored reactors. A useful habitat would pair them with crops, waste processors, water recovery, physicochemical polishing and robust backups. ESA’s MELiSSA program demonstrates the kind of integrated research required, while NASA’s MOXIE provides the clearest on-Mars oxygen result so far through electrolysis rather than biology. The concept is promising for reducing resupply over multi-year missions, but a complete microbial life-support system remains a future engineering objective, not a capability already deployed on Mars.

Frequently Asked Questions
Has a microbe made oxygen on Mars?
No biological oxygen-production system has been demonstrated on Mars. NASA’s MOXIE made oxygen there using solid-oxide electrolysis of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Could astronauts plant crops directly in Martian soil?
Not on the evidence available here. NASA studies used amended Martian regolith simulant and specify that a growth medium must provide support, oxygen, ions and liquid; untreated regolith has not been shown to be a complete farm medium.
Would algae alone feed a Mars crew?
Algal or cyanobacterial biomass could contribute food, but a crew diet also requires nutritional balance, safety testing and processing. A full system would likely combine microbial biomass, crops and stored food.
Why use biological systems on a three-year mission?
Long missions make the mass of launched oxygen, food and water significant. Regenerative biology could produce some resources in place, provided its reactors, power, controls and backups are included in the mission design.
