Producer Kensuke Tanabe says the 100% endings of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Metroid Prime: Federation Force laid groundwork for the Samus–Sylux story that Beyond begins. In Nintendo’s synopsis, Sylux catches up with Samus; their clash activates an artifact that sends her to the planet Viewros.
What connects Beyond to the earlier Prime games?
The clearest bridge is Sylux, not a direct continuation of every conflict in the first three numbered Prime games. In an interview published in the March 2026 edition of Nintendo Dream, producer Kensuke Tanabe said he had wanted to turn Samus and Sylux’s story into a game and that he laid groundwork in the 100% endings of Prime 3 and Federation Force. The interview is available in an English translation hosted by Omega Metroid; its English wording is a translation, not the original Japanese.

Tanabe’s account makes the connection specific: the earlier games establish a thread involving Sylux, while Beyond is where the Samus–Sylux story he had wanted to tell begins. It does not mean that every plotline from the earlier games carries forward as the central conflict.

Where Sylux’s story began
Sylux was one of the hunters in Metroid Prime Hunters. Tanabe says the game’s designers created the hunters’ stories, including Sylux’s grudge against Samus and the Galactic Federation. He also says he asked them not to give Sylux a detailed scenario because he hoped to develop the broader Prime universe and use its characters in future games. That deliberate openness helps explain why Sylux could appear before his motives were fully developed.

- Explore a mysterious planet to find your way home
- Deadly sharpshooter Sylux has finally caught up with renowned bounty hunter Samus Aran! After an unexpected accident in the wake of their clash, Samus finds herself transported to Viewros—a mysterious planet once inhabited by an ancient race. Now she must explore this planet, all while battling the strange creatures that inhabit it, to find her way home.
- Scan your surroundings for clues, make the most of your equipment and weapons, and use Samus’s newfound psychic abilities—and her technologically advanced bike, the Vi-O-La—to traverse and explore the environment. Operate mechanisms, control your charge beam, and more—you’ll need every tool at your disposal to survive and escape Viewros!
Tanabe described the setup this way: “I had always wanted to one day turn the story of Samus and Sylux into a game, which I laid the groundwork for in the 100% endings of Prime 3 and Metroid Prime: Federation Force.” The quotation is from the English translation of his interview, rather than a published English original.
How the Prime trilogy fits—and what it does not explain
Nintendo’s 2007 interview with the Prime 3 team described Metroid Prime 3: Corruption as the final part of the Metroid Prime trilogy. Assistant producer Risa Tabata identified Dark Samus as one of that game’s key themes. That is the context for the trilogy-era conflict, but it is distinct from the Sylux thread Tanabe identifies as the bridge into Beyond.

- Play with mouse controls, enhanced visuals, and two different display modes—only on the Nintendo Switch 2 system Aim with a Joy-Con 2 controller as a mouse! The Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game also features enhanced resolution, framerate, and load times.
- Two display modes let you choose how to experience the adventure. Enjoy more detail in Quality Mode, which runs at 60 frames per second in 4k while docked and in 1080p while in handheld, or prioritize super-smooth action with a higher frame rate in Performance Mode, which runs at 120 frames per second in 1080p while docked and 720p in while in handheld. Both choices are HDR compatible.
It is therefore misleading to treat the Samus–Sylux setup as simply an extension of the Dark Samus and Phazon story. Tanabe names Hunters, the 100% ending of Prime 3, and Federation Force’s 100% ending as the relevant groundwork for this particular story.
What happens in Beyond
Nintendo’s synopsis says Sylux catches up with Samus, and their clash activates a strange artifact. Samus is transported to Viewros, an unknown planet once inhabited by an ancient civilization, and must explore it while searching for a way home.

- 1. Explore the mysterious planet Viewros as the renowned bounty hunter Samus Aran
- 2. Scan your surroundings for clues and make the most of your equipment and weapons to survive
- 3. Use Samus’s newfound psychic abilities—and her technologically advanced bike, the Vi-O-La—to traverse and explore the environment.
The new setting brings its own elements into the adventure: the Lamorn civilization, psychic abilities, and Sol Valley, a desert where Samus can travel using the Vi-O-La. These details expand the story beyond the older character conflict. The Sylux history is the connection backward; Viewros and its inhabitants form the new setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to play the earlier games first?
The available Nintendo synopsis and product information do not say that earlier games are required to follow Beyond, nor do they explicitly describe it as a standalone story. The practical distinction is that prior games provide context for Sylux, while Nintendo’s synopsis establishes the new immediate situation: Samus is on Viewros and looking for a way home.

If you want to understand the references Tanabe specifically identifies, Hunters introduces Sylux, and the 100% endings of Prime 3 and Federation Force provide the later groundwork he cites. This does not require treating the full Phazon-era trilogy as a prerequisite to the Samus–Sylux thread.

Nintendo’s available synopsis and product overview do not provide a complete authoritative timeline placement for Beyond or settle every spoiler-level question about how its events relate to earlier plots. Tanabe’s interview explains the intended Sylux connection, but it is not a full account of every continuity detail. Claims beyond those points should be treated as interpretation rather than confirmed chronology.
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 Edition’s release date as December 4, 2025, and identifies Retro Studios as developer and Nintendo as publisher. The product page distinguishes the Nintendo Switch version, Switch 2 Edition, and a Switch 2 upgrade pack. The Switch 2 Edition adds mouse control support, enhanced visuals and frame rates, and Quality and Performance modes.
The Sylux amiibo is an optional extra: Nintendo says it provides easier access to an in-game cinematic and plays voice lines. It is not needed to understand the story. Nintendo has also announced Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective, describing concept drawings, behind-the-scenes illustrations, and commentary; its current availability is not established here.
