Message suggestions work best when they make a next step easier without deciding what you say. A short reply chip, an AI-written draft, and a prompt that searches for information are different tools: they use context differently, send you to different actions, and offer different levels of control.
What kind of message suggestion are you seeing?
The word “suggestion” can describe several distinct features. Knowing which one is on screen helps you understand whether a tap will insert words, create a draft, or start a search.

| Type | What it does | What a tap does |
|---|---|---|
| Short reply suggestion | Offers a brief possible response based on the conversation. | In Apple’s documented developer flow, it places the selected text in the message text UI for review; it does not itself establish that every app sends the reply immediately. Apple Developer Documentation |
| Generated draft or rewrite | Creates or revises a longer message, sometimes in a selected style. | Google says Magic Compose lets you review and edit a suggestion before sending. Google Messages Help |
| Information prompt | Helps find information related to a conversation topic, such as a movie, restaurant, or local place. | In Google Messages, tapping a Gemini suggestion asks Gemini to search for the term; it is not simply inserting a reply. Google Messages Help |
These examples describe specific Apple and Google features, not a universal rule for every messaging app. Check what the app says a suggestion will do, especially when the tap may initiate a search rather than prepare text.

When should a reply suggestion appear?
A useful suggestion depends on the moment and the available context. Apple’s UIKit documentation gives a concrete example for Smart Reply in messaging: it may offer suggestions when the input field is empty, the latest message came from the other participant, and the recent messages are text rather than images or emoji. Apple also says it may not generate a suggestion every time. Apple Developer Documentation

- Long-lasting battery + TurboPower charging. Power through day after day with a 5200mAh battery, then get hours of power in just minutes.****
Those conditions illustrate sensible context gating: a reply is more plausible when someone has just said something and the conversation provides enough text to interpret. They are Apple’s documented conditions, not a checklist that applies to every product. A missing suggestion does not necessarily mean the feature is broken; the message type, timing, or app’s eligibility rules may not fit.
How to keep the person in charge of the words
A suggestion should be visibly optional, and a person should be able to decide whether it fits. Short replies and longer generated drafts call for different review: a one-tap chip may be quick to inspect, while a rewritten paragraph deserves a read before it goes out.

- Keep selection distinct from sending. Where the app supports it, choosing a suggestion should place text in the composer so the sender can review it. Apple documents this pattern for selected Smart Reply text. Apple Developer Documentation
- Make longer drafts editable. Google’s Magic Compose instructions allow the person to edit a selected suggestion before sending. Google Messages Help
- Make the action clear. A reply, a draft, and a search should not look interchangeable if tapping them has different consequences.
- Let people decline. Ignoring a suggestion is a valid choice. If a feature is unwanted, look in the app’s settings or help for a control to disable that feature; available controls vary by app and feature.
These are design principles drawn from the documented behavior of particular features, not proof that suggestions improve conversation quality or user agency in every app.

What happens to chat data?
Privacy depends on the feature and on what happens after a suggestion is tapped. “On-device” does not automatically mean that no related information is ever sent elsewhere.

Google Messages Gemini suggestions
Google says these suggestions are generated on the device using recent chats and are visible only to the person using the feature, although another person using Google Messages might see the same suggestions. If a person taps a suggestion, Messages asks Gemini to search for its term; Google says the search terms, not the conversation, are sent to Gemini. Separately, Google says the suggestion category and whether the person tapped it may be sent to improve suggestions. Google Messages Help
Google Messages Magic Compose
Google describes Magic Compose as an experimental feature with limited availability that can generate a message suggestion or rewrite a draft in a selected style. Its help page says the message-suggestion feature uses the previous 20 messages for context and that processing occurs on-device with Gemini Nano on devices with AICore. The page describes additional eligibility limits for rewrite functionality, including age, language, device, and account requirements. Availability and requirements can change, so consult the current in-product help for the specific feature. Google Messages Help

Google ML Kit Smart Reply
For developers, Google says ML Kit Smart Reply uses the full conversation context and runs on-device. Google describes it as intended for casual consumer conversations and lists English as its supported language. Those scope limits matter: a feature designed for casual exchanges should not be assumed suitable for sensitive, professional, or high-stakes conversations. Google for Developers: ML Kit

Why suggestions can be wrong—or absent
Suggestions are generated from limited signals and are not a reliable reading of intent. The available examples show different constraints: Apple may suppress Smart Reply when the input or recent-message conditions do not fit; ML Kit is explicitly scoped to casual consumer conversation and English; Magic Compose has feature-specific device, language, age, and account limits. Apple Developer Documentation Google for Developers: ML Kit Google Messages Help
Even when a suggestion appears, it may sound too formal, miss a joke, or fail to reflect the relationship between the people chatting. Treat it as an option to assess, not a statement of what you meant. For sensitive details or consequential decisions, composing the message yourself gives you clearer control over its wording.
If you want fewer suggestions
There is no single switch that turns off every kind of message suggestion across all apps. Identify where the suggestion appears and whether it is a keyboard feature, an in-app reply or drafting tool, or an informational prompt. Then check that app’s current settings or help for a feature-specific control. If no disable option is provided, you can leave the suggestion unused; do not assume that tapping it is necessary to dismiss it or that one app’s setting controls another app’s suggestions.
