Memplua is an open-source, Windows-focused project for turning computer audio into structured draft notes without sending the audio to an external AI service. Its pipeline captures system audio, transcribes speech, uses a local language model to structure the transcript, and lets a person review the resulting notes before exporting them to Obsidian. In a September 29, 2026 account, developer Ivan said the main pipeline worked, but described an unresolved voice-activity-detection problem and installation and startup failures that surfaced when outside users tried it.
How Memplua turns computer audio into Obsidian notes
The appeal is straightforward: you can listen to a lecture, video, or other audio and want the useful ideas in your knowledge base, but stopping to extract, rewrite, and organize them interrupts the listening. Memplua treats the computer’s system audio as a general input, rather than building a separate connection for each audio source. Development began on Windows because audio capture depends on the operating system and that was Ivan’s own platform.

The workflow Ivan described is:
- Capture: Record audio playing through the Windows system.
- Detect speech: Use voice activity detection (VAD) to distinguish voice from silence and noise.
- Transcribe: Convert the speech to text with Whisper.
- Chunk: Divide the transcript into portions suitable for processing.
- Structure locally: Pass text to a local model through llama.cpp and ask it for structured JSON, rather than open-ended prose. Qwen3-4B-Q4 was one model being tested.
- Review: Edit or reject proposed notes and connections.
- Export: Save approved notes to Obsidian.
The structured output is intended to distinguish terms and their definitions from thoughts that connect multiple terms, then present a draft set for review. Whisper, llama.cpp, and the named model are choices in this implementation, not evidence that they are the best-performing combination or a universal recommendation.
Why Memplua keeps a person in the loop
The early ambition was “audio → LLM → Obsidian.” Ivan found that automatically writing model output into a knowledge base was too risky as a default. A model can misread what someone said, repeat information, invent a weak relationship, or produce something technically plausible but not useful to the reader.

Review is therefore part of the design, not a cosmetic final step. Memplua prepares drafts that a user can revise or reject before saving. As Ivan put it, “Memplua is not supposed to replace thinking. It is supposed to remove the repetitive work required to turn consumed information into a usable draft.” That distinction matters: automation can reduce transcription and drafting effort, while the user still decides what belongs in their notes.
How transcript chunking caused duplicate notes
Chunking creates a context problem. A sentence or idea may begin in one transcript segment and finish in the next. Ivan first used an overlapping, or “floating,” window so the model could see nearby text and preserve continuity. But the overlap also repeated older material, and the model sometimes extracted it again as a new note. The result was a frustratingly repetitive approval queue.

The revised design separates two roles within the input:

- Focus: The portion from which the model should extract new information.
- Context: Surrounding text that helps interpret the focus, but should not itself trigger repeated entities.
This change addresses the specific duplication failure Ivan encountered; his account does not establish that it eliminates duplicates altogether.

What outside testers found broken
VAD rejected audio that appeared to contain speech
The most technically unresolved failure involved Silero VAD. Ivan had added it to filter silence and noise before transcription. One external tester reported audio with a peak amplitude of 0.55 and RMS of 0.24, yet the maximum VAD probability was only 0.0013. Memplua discarded the audio as if no voice were present. When VAD was disabled, transcription and note generation worked normally.
Ivan narrowed the suspected problem to the VAD input path, with possible causes including sample rate, normalization, window size, tensor shape, or state handling. He did not identify a confirmed cause in the September 29 account, so those possibilities should not be mistaken for a diagnosis. The reported numbers describe one troubleshooting case, not a benchmark or a general failure rate.

Packaging and startup failed on other machines
Testing beyond the developer’s own computer also exposed distribution problems. One build was missing a runtime DLL that was already present on Ivan’s machine, and another started a process while leaving the user interface invisible. Ivan said he fixed both issues, rebuilt the installer to handle dependencies more reliably, and added online and offline installation paths. Those are fixes he reported at the time; they do not independently establish how later releases behave.
What the September 2026 snapshot establishes
Ivan described Memplua as alpha software in his September 29, 2026 article. At that point, he reported a working main pipeline comprising Windows system-audio capture, transcription, local inference, structured note generation, manual review and editing, and Obsidian export. He also reported the installer and UI fixes and said early external testers were using it.

His next priorities were first-run setup, more predictable VAD behavior, clearer model configuration, and local-inference presets that would require less manual tuning. That priority list suggests the central challenge was making the pipeline dependable and usable, rather than adding more AI features. The account does not establish current release status, hardware requirements, support beyond the Windows focus, or security guarantees beyond the local-processing design intent. It describes the project and its state as of its publication date, not necessarily the latest version.
For Ivan, external testing mattered because familiar setups can conceal defects. He wrote that testers “found bugs I had stopped noticing, questioned UI decisions that seemed obvious to me, and forced me to think more carefully about the boundaries of the project.” The missing runtime and invisible window were concrete distribution failures; the VAD case exposed a deeper reliability problem that remained open in his account.
