MEGATRON is a set of cosmological simulations designed to model how the first stars changed their surroundings—and how those changes could connect galaxies seen by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) with chemical clues preserved in ancient stars near the Milky Way. The simulations do not observe the first stars directly. Instead, they follow gas, starlight, supernovae and chemical enrichment together, giving researchers a physical framework for comparing two different records of the early universe.
How can JWST observations and ancient stars tell scientists about the same early universe?
They preserve different kinds of evidence. JWST observes distant galaxies as they were when the universe was young. Ancient stars in and around the Milky Way are nearby survivors whose chemical composition can retain clues about earlier generations of stars. Stellar archaeology means using those surviving stars’ chemistry to infer aspects of the history of stars and galaxies that came before them.

| Evidence | What it can reveal | What it does not show on its own |
|---|---|---|
| JWST observations of young galaxies | Properties of galaxies during early cosmic times, as seen through their light. | The full sequence of earlier star formation and chemical enrichment that produced them. |
| Chemical abundances in ancient stars | Clues about material from earlier stars that was incorporated into later generations. | A direct view of the distant galaxies and events where that material was produced. |
| MEGATRON simulations | A modeled account connecting gas, stars, radiation and element production over time. | Direct proof that a particular simulated history or first-star property occurred in nature. |
The comparison is complementary, not a contest between a telescope and stellar chemistry. JWST sees distant galaxies in their young state; ancient stars offer a local chemical record. A simulation can test whether a proposed physical history is consistent with both kinds of evidence. University of Bath researcher Martin Rey described MEGATRON as “a physical bridge between the two.”

The simulations begin with pristine gas containing no elements heavier than helium, representing conditions shortly after the Big Bang. They follow the modeled formation of the first stars, the radiation those stars emit, their supernova explosions, and the dispersal of newly forged elements. Later stars and galaxies can then form from gas whose composition has changed.

“Metals” in astronomy means all elements heavier than helium, not just metals in the everyday sense. The simulation tracks the movement of gas, the propagation of starlight and changing chemical concentrations together over billions of years. The modeled galaxy is expected to grow into a system similar in mass to the Milky Way.
Why track these processes together?
Starlight can affect gas around a galaxy, while supernovae return elements to that gas. The motion and composition of the gas then shape the material available for later stars. MEGATRON’s coupled approach is intended to represent these interactions rather than treating each ingredient in isolation.

The University of Bath says its simulations resolve gas structures that simpler models can miss. The collaboration’s results suggest that simplified treatments can understate stellar radiation and the complexity of chemical processes around galaxies. That is a statement about how models behave and what they may leave out—not evidence that JWST has directly seen every event in MEGATRON’s modeled history.

What does the identified MEGATRON paper predict about tiny dwarf galaxies?
One specific study, “MEGATRON: how the first stars can create an iron metallicity plateau in the smallest dwarf galaxies,” reports quantitative predictions from the simulations. It is listed as a 2026 study in the Open Journal of Astrophysics (DOI: 10.33232/001c.169605). Its abstract reports the following model results:

- For dwarf galaxies with stellar masses at or below 100,000 times the Sun’s mass, the simulations produce a low-mass plateau with a mean stellar iron abundance around [Fe/H] ≈ −2.5.
- About 20% of the simulated dwarf galaxies fall into a tail with mean [Fe/H] ≤ −3.
- The authors link the plateau to enrichment by Population III pair-instability supernovae. In the study’s models, the effect persists across large changes to assumptions about feedback from Population II stars and also appears in bound satellites of the central galaxy.
[Fe/H] expresses a star’s iron abundance relative to hydrogen compared with the Sun; lower values indicate less iron relative to hydrogen. The plateau and the roughly 20% tail are results for the simulations described in that 2026 paper. The 20% figure is not a measurement of how common such galaxies are across the universe, and neither result should be treated as a universal observed frequency.
What do the results establish—and what remains a model?
MEGATRON provides a way to test whether a physical account of early star formation and enrichment can make sense of both galaxy observations and chemical clues in surviving stars. The identified paper offers one specific prediction about iron abundances in very low-mass dwarf galaxies. The broader project announcement describes four papers as the collaboration’s first substantial published results, but the detailed quantitative findings available here are from that one identified study.

The simulations do not directly detect individual Population III stars, the first generation of stars, or prove their exact properties. Their histories are modeled outcomes to compare with observations. As Rey put it, the aim is to test ideas about the first stars against JWST data and ancient stars’ chemical fingerprints; complementary observations can help researchers test competing models.
Who is behind MEGATRON, and how long will the project run?
MEGATRON is led by researchers at the University of Bath, with collaborators at the University of Chicago and the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris. According to the University of Bath, the project began in 2023 and is scheduled to run through 2030. The university also reports that the next generation of simulations has been awarded 40 million processor hours on UK national supercomputers. Those dates and computing resources are project details reported by the university, rather than measurements of the simulations’ scientific findings.
