In Aura Energy’s FY2026 annual report, the project’s investment decision, construction and first production are still future targets. That places Tiris behind Namibia’s established producers, while its development path can be compared with projects such as Namibia’s Etango and Tanzania’s Mkuju River, which are also advancing toward commercial production.
How do the projects compare today?
The clearest comparison is by development stage. A producing mine, a project with a mining licence, a pilot plant and a project awaiting a final investment decision represent different levels of progress; their production and resource figures are not interchangeable.

| Project | Position reported by the cited source | What the status means |
|---|---|---|
| Tiris, Mauritania | Aura Energy reports 85% ownership through Tiris Ressources SA and 15% Mauritanian government participation. Its FY2026 annual report gives a mineral resource of 91.3 million pounds of U3O8, estimated in June 2024, and an ore reserve of 33.6 million pounds, estimated in December 2024. | Development-stage project. FID by the end of 2026, construction in 2027 and first production around the start of 2029 are company targets, not completed milestones. |
| Operating mines, Namibia | The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s 2025 report documents Namibia’s established uranium production. The Namibian Uranium Association reports that Langer Heinrich resumed production in 2024. | Actual production makes Namibia more mature as a uranium-producing jurisdiction than Mauritania. These sources do not make a 2026 national production figure part of this comparison. |
| Etango, Namibia | Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism register records conversion of Etango’s retention licence to a mining licence on 31 October 2023. Bannerman Energy’s June 2026 activities report describes early works and a strategic financing transaction progressing. | A mining licence and early works are meaningful advances, but they do not by themselves establish that full construction or production has begun. |
| Mkuju River, Tanzania | Tanzania’s Ministry of Minerals reported on 13 May 2026 that a pilot processing plant had been inaugurated in July 2025 and that Mantra was still pursuing capital for a full mine and processing plant. The ministry said the mining licence was expected to expire in April 2028. | Pilot processing is not commercial mine production. Financing for full-scale development remained a material next step in the ministry’s update. |
What is planned at Tiris?
Ownership and mineral estimates
Aura Energy’s FY2026 annual report assigns 85% of Tiris to the company through Tiris Ressources SA and 15% to the Mauritanian government. The report gives the project a 91.3-million-pound U3O8 mineral resource, with an estimate date of June 2024, and a 33.6-million-pound U3O8 ore reserve, with an estimate date of December 2024. The reserve is reported as 62.8 million tonnes at 243 parts per million U3O8. Aura states that neither estimate changed during FY2026.

Resource and reserve are different categories: a mineral resource is not automatically an economically mineable reserve. These are company-reported estimates, and the dates matter when comparing them with figures from other projects. The Investment Promotion Agency of Mauritania also publishes a 100-million-pound uranium figure, but its undated overview does not specify an estimate date, classification or whether the figure refers to Tiris. It should not be treated as a current classified Tiris resource.

Mine design and schedule
Aura describes Tiris as a shallow open-pit project using alkaline leaching, with a planned initial production rate of 2 million pounds of U3O8 per year. That is a design target, not present output. The company’s FY2026 schedule targets a final investment decision by the end of 2026, construction in 2027 and first production around the start of 2029; each remains subject to the project reaching those milestones.
The U.S. International Trade Administration’s Mauritania mining guide, last published on 10 February 2026, also describes Tiris as progressing through permitting and engineering. Neither that description nor Aura’s targets mean that Tiris has entered production.

Why Namibia is a different benchmark
Production versus development
Namibia offers two useful comparisons: operating production and projects still moving through development. The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s Uranium 2024: Resources, Production and Demand, published in 2025, provides continental and historical production context. The Namibian Uranium Association’s account that Langer Heinrich resumed production in 2024 is a more specific recent operating milestone. Historical production figures in the OECD report should be read with their stated year, not presented as current 2026 output.

Etango’s licence and early works
Etango shows why a project’s licence status should be separated from construction and financing progress. The Namibian environmental register records the mining-licence conversion on 31 October 2023, while Bannerman’s June 2026 report describes early works and a strategic financing transaction progressing. Those milestones indicate advancement, but neither source says that commercial production has started.
How Mkuju River compares with Tiris
Mkuju River and Tiris are both non-producing projects in the cited updates, but their reported milestones differ. Tanzania’s Ministry of Minerals described a pilot processing plant inaugurated in July 2025, while saying Mantra was still pursuing capital to build the full mine and processing plant. Its 13 May 2026 update also put the expected mining-licence expiry in April 2028. By contrast, Aura’s Tiris report sets out a company target for FID, construction and first production, rather than reporting completed development milestones.

A pilot facility can demonstrate processing work at a smaller scale; it is not proof of a commercial mine or full-scale plant. For both projects, financing, licensing and construction progress need to be assessed separately from resource size or stated production targets.

The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s 2025 report discusses uranium-producing, idled and development-stage projects across Namibia, Malawi, Niger, Tanzania, Mauritania, Botswana, Mali and Zambia. That helps place Tiris in a broader continental pipeline, but the report’s project descriptions draw on different reporting vintages. For recent milestones at Etango and Mkuju River, the cited national and company updates are more specific; the OECD report should not be read as proof of each project’s status in 2026.

The comparison also has limits beyond timing. Aura identifies Tiris’s proposed mining and leaching approach, but the cited project updates do not establish a like-for-like account of transport infrastructure, permitting progress, financing or processing route for all four comparisons. A ranking based on resource pounds or planned annual output alone would therefore miss important differences in readiness and would mix company targets with operating production.
