How Matter Firmware Updates Work Across Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa

Matter defines an OTA update path, but whether Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa can deliver firmware depends on the accessory’s support and its manufacturer’s release process.

Matter standardizes how compatible devices can receive over-the-air (OTA) firmware, but it does not guarantee that every Matter device supports that method—or that Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa can update every device. In the Matter OTA model, the accessory requests an update from a platform or service acting as the provider. The manufacturer still decides whether to implement that model and publish a release; some products use the maker’s own update process instead. [Connectivity Standards Alliance]

How Matter OTA firmware updates work

A Matter accessory that implements OTA acts as an OTA Requestor. It periodically checks an OTA Provider for available software. If an eligible update is offered, the accessory requests and downloads the image, validates it, and installs it according to its implementation. Google’s developer guide describes this polling model and says the device must validate the payload signature; the developer is responsible for signing the image. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) makes clear that Matter devices may use the OTA functionality in the specification or use their own software-update methods. Updates can deliver features and security patches, but the Matter label alone does not tell you which route a particular product uses. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model. How Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa differ

Ecosystem Documented OTA Provider or route Manufacturer-side requirements or limits
Apple Home Apple documents the primary Apple home hub as the Provider. Its guide identifies a connected Apple TV, HomePod, or HomePod mini as a primary home hub. In the described developer workflow, firmware information and its OTA URL are entered in the Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL); the accessory requests the binary from the primary hub. [Apple Matter OTA User Guide] The guide is developer documentation. It does not establish a universal firmware-update screen in the Home app or mean every Matter accessory can be updated through Apple Home. Apple’s Matter support page covers pairing and cross-ecosystem management, not a universal firmware-update control. [Apple Matter OTA User Guide] [Apple Matter support in iOS]
Google Home Google says its Matter hubs, including Nest Mini, can act as OTA Providers. Devices linked to a Matter hub but not registered in Developer Console can receive automatic OTA pushes. Developers can distribute images through Google Home Developer Console or the CSA DCL. Google says its ecosystem OTA process is independent of the DCL’s certification and authenticity information. [Google Home Developers: Overview of OTA] Google’s developer guide describes staged distribution to an integration or a chosen percentage of devices. It does not promise that every accessory exposed in the consumer app supports Google-delivered firmware. [Google Home Developers: Overview of OTA]
Amazon Alexa Amazon documents OTA delivery from Alexa for eligible Matter devices. [Works with Alexa Local Connection Requirements] The device must support Matter OTA as a Requestor; the developer must publish firmware to the DCL and run regression tests with Alexa for every firmware release. Amazon says Alexa pushes updates only for developers who complete this testing commitment and directs developers to an Amazon representative about eligibility and next steps. If a firmware change affects capabilities or behavior on a Works with Alexa-certified product, recertification may be required. These are developer requirements, not evidence that every Matter accessory in Alexa is eligible for Alexa delivery. [Works with Alexa Local Connection Requirements]

These are documented platform workflows, not a blanket ranking or a guarantee of a consumer-facing update button. Even when a platform can act as Provider, the accessory must support the route and the manufacturer must make a release available.

It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

What the manufacturer controls

The manufacturer determines whether the product implements Matter OTA or uses its own update method, creates and signs firmware, and decides whether and when to publish a release. Platform support cannot supply an update the manufacturer has not issued. The CSA notes that OTA updates can provide features and security patches, while its FAQ recognizes both Matter OTA and manufacturer-specific update methods. [Connectivity Standards Alliance Matter FAQ]

That is why owning a Matter hub or Thread border router is not, by itself, evidence that a particular accessory will receive firmware through it. The device’s implementation, the maker’s release, and a supported provider workflow all have to line up. Use the product maker’s support page or setup instructions to confirm the route for your model.

Why Matter OTA versions move forward

Google’s guide says a Requestor selects only a numerically higher version and, if several newer images are available, receives the highest version rather than installing every release in sequence. An OTA image cannot simply be deleted or replaced after release. If the firmware has a problem, Google’s documented remedy is a new image with a higher version number. [Google Home Developers: Overview of OTA]

This also shapes rollback: the Matter Core Specification R1.3 says a functional rollback is issued as a new, higher-version image, even if its contents restore earlier behavior. A lower version number is not the supported way to return to prior functionality. [Matter Core Specification R1.3] [Google Home Developers: Overview of OTA]

How to find the right update route for your device

  1. Identify the exact accessory model. Matter compatibility alone does not establish that the product implements Matter OTA.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s firmware instructions. Confirm whether updates use Matter OTA through a platform, the maker’s own app or service, or another documented process.
  3. Check platform eligibility where relevant. Apple’s guide describes its primary home hub provider workflow; Google documents its Matter hubs and developer distribution options; Amazon’s Alexa delivery depends on the developer’s DCL publication and release-by-release regression testing.
  4. Follow the maker’s release and installation guidance. If no update is listed, that may mean no compatible release is available through that route; do not infer that another hub will force an update.
