These are market labels, not official diagnoses of the economy or forecasts of what comes next.
What is the difference between a correction, a bear market and a crash?
The terms describe different features of a market decline. A correction and a bear market are usually distinguished by how far an index or investment has fallen from a recent high. “Crash” emphasizes how quickly and severely prices fall. The labels are conventions, not a single official classification system, so definitions can vary by source.

| Term | Common description | What the label emphasizes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Correction | A decline of around 10% from a recent high. Some descriptions specify at least 10%; others place it above 10% and below 20%. | The size of the decline. | A universal boundary or a prediction that the decline will stop before reaching bear-market territory. |
| Bear market | Commonly a decline of 20% or more. Investor.gov’s general glossary definition adds that a broad market index falls that far over at least two months. | A large decline, and in one widely cited definition, its duration. | That a recession is occurring or that all sources use the same duration condition. |
| Crash | A sudden, extreme decline over a day or very short period; the reviewed source does not specify a universal percentage. | The speed and severity of the move. | A fixed numerical trigger that applies to every market or event. |
For any of these terms, the reference point matters: a percentage decline is measured against a specified recent high, and the asset or index being discussed should be identified. A headline about one index does not automatically describe every stock, bond or investment.

A correction is often described as a drop of about 10% from a recent market high. Fidelity notes that there is no official definition and describes the common convention as a decline of at least 10%. Morningstar describes a correction as greater than 10% but less than 20%. Because those wordings differ at the boundaries, it is more accurate to say a market “entered correction territory under this convention” than to imply every source applies an identical cutoff.

How to calculate the decline
Compare the current level with the relevant high. If an index stood at 100 at its recent peak and then fell to 90, it is down 10% from that peak: the 10-point decline divided by the starting level of 100. If it falls to 80, it is down 20% from the same peak. The calculation depends on using the same reference high throughout; choosing a different peak changes the result.
This arithmetic also explains why describing the event requires more than saying “the market is down.” State which index or asset is being measured, its reference high and the level or date used for the comparison. Without that context, a percentage can sound more definite than it is.

Correction territory is not a promise about what happens next
The word “correction” describes the size of a decline relative to a high; it does not mean the market has corrected a mispricing, nor does it guarantee that prices will rebound. A decline that reaches a commonly used correction threshold may deepen further. Under a 20% convention, a decline can therefore pass from correction territory into bear-market territory without a break or a new event that changes the underlying calculation.
What does a bear market mean?
A bear market commonly means that a broad market index has fallen at least 20% from a recent high. Investor.gov’s glossary uses a more specific formulation: “Generally, a bear market occurs when a broad market index falls by 20% or more over at least a two-month period.” Other investor-education descriptions use the 20% threshold without specifying that duration. If duration is important to a particular claim, name the definition being applied rather than treating the two conventions as interchangeable.

The two-month condition in Investor.gov’s wording is not a universal rule shared by every source. A report using the threshold alone may describe a 20% decline as a bear market as soon as the fall meets its chosen criteria; one using Investor.gov’s general description also considers whether the decline has persisted for at least two months. When comparing reports, check both the measurement period and the reference high.
Bear market does not mean recession
A bear-market label refers to market prices, not to a formal finding about the broader economy. Investor expectations and reactions to new information influence prices, and markets can diverge from current economic conditions. A bear market alone therefore does not prove that a recession is happening. To establish an economic claim, look for evidence about economic activity rather than inferring it from the market label.

What makes a market crash different?
“Crash” is a descriptive term for a sudden, extreme decline over a short period. Chase describes a crash as a steep drop over a single day or very short stretch. Unlike the common percentage conventions for corrections and bear markets, the reviewed description does not provide a universal numerical threshold for a crash.
That distinction matters when reading headlines. A steep decline over a short period may be called a crash because of its speed and severity, even though the term does not itself tell you whether a particular 10% or 20% threshold has been crossed. Conversely, a prolonged decline can meet a bear-market convention without being described as a sudden crash. The words emphasize different aspects, so they need not be mutually exclusive.

How to read a market-decline headline accurately
Before drawing a conclusion from a label, identify the measure behind it. This short checklist helps separate the reported fact from the terminology attached to it:
- Which market? Check whether the report concerns a broad index, a sector index, an individual company’s stock or another asset. A decline in one is not automatically a decline of the same size in another.
- Which high? Find the peak used as the starting point for the percentage calculation. “Down 20%” has meaning only in relation to a reference level and a measurement date.
- What convention? For a correction, note whether the source says “at least 10%” or “greater than 10% and less than 20%.” For a bear market, check whether a duration condition is included.
- How quickly did it happen? Speed is central to the descriptive use of “crash,” but the word has no universal percentage trigger in the cited definitions.
- Is an economic conclusion being added? A market label is not, by itself, evidence that the economy is in recession.
Keeping these details separate prevents a label from carrying more meaning than the underlying data supports. For example, the statement “a broad index is 20% below its recent high” reports a measurable comparison; whether a publication calls that a bear market may depend on its definition, including whether it applies a duration rule.
Why the labels are useful—and where they stop being useful
These terms offer shorthand for the scale or character of a decline. They help readers distinguish a relatively smaller pullback from a larger drawdown, or a rapid drop from a slower decline. But they do not explain the cause of falling prices, say how long a downturn will last, or establish what an investor should do.

The percentage thresholds are conventions, not reliable signals about what markets will do next. A correction does not necessarily end at 10%, a bear market is not necessarily accompanied by an economic recession, and calling a fall a crash does not supply a standardized measure of its total size. The useful information is the underlying comparison: the asset or index, the chosen peak, the decline and—where relevant—the period over which it occurred.
