Margin interest is the cost of borrowing from your brokerage firm. In a U.S. retail margin account, the broker generally calculates interest each day on an eligible debit balance, using the applicable annual rate and a day-count convention, then posts the accumulated charge to your account monthly. The exact balance, rate tiers, settlement date, cash netting, compounding and posting date come from your margin agreement and can differ substantially between firms.
What margin interest is
When you buy securities with more money than you have available in the account, your broker lends the shortfall. Your securities are collateral for that loan, and the debit balance generates interest. FINRA describes the arrangement this way: “The shortfall between the purchase price and the amount of money you put in is a loan from the brokerage firm, and you will incur interest costs, just as with any other loan.”

You do not always create a loan by deliberately selecting a “borrow” button. A purchase, withdrawal, options transaction, transfer or settlement adjustment can leave a debit in a margin account. A negative cash figure is a warning sign, but the amount that actually bears interest is the broker’s adjusted or settled debit balance under its agreement.

The basic margin-interest formula
A useful approximation is:
Daily interest ≈ interest-bearing debit balance × annual margin rate ÷ day-count basis.
For a billing period, add the daily charges. If the debit and rate stay constant, brokers often express the calculation as:
Average daily debit balance × (annual rate ÷ 360) × number of days.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

That convention is common in those examples, not a universal legal rule. Dividing by 360 produces a slightly higher effective annual cost than dividing the same nominal rate by 365, because interest is allocated over fewer days.
Worked example using an average balance
Suppose the average interest-bearing debit is $10,000 for 30 days and the annual margin rate is 8.74%. Using the 360-day method:

This is Webull’s illustrative calculation under its stated method. It is not a current rate quote and should not be treated as a prediction for another broker. If your balance changes during the month, the firm may calculate interest from each day’s adjusted balance or use an equivalent average-daily-balance method.

The interest-bearing amount may reflect unsettled trades, settled positions, withdrawals, option activity, transfers and other adjustments. A positive cash number on one screen does not necessarily offset a margin debit elsewhere. The agreement may define a “debit balance” differently from the cash line shown on your account page.
Ask specifically whether the firm nets cash-account and margin-account balances, and whether a bank or money-market sweep reduces the debit. The SEC investor bulletin recommends confirming how account structure and sweep balances are treated instead of assuming that visible cash automatically lowers interest.
How variable rates and tiers change the calculation
Margin rates can vary by broker, loan size, benchmark or firm policy. They may also change while your loan is outstanding. A headline rate is therefore insufficient for estimating cost unless you know the balance range and the rate schedule that applies to it.

Flat, benchmark-linked and discretionary rates
- Flat or schedule rate: One published annual rate applies to a stated debit range, subject to the firm’s change rules.
- Benchmark-linked rate: The rate is derived from a reference rate plus or minus a spread. The reference and the spread should be identified in the agreement.
- Discretionary or otherwise variable rate: The firm may change the rate under terms disclosed in the agreement. Confirm how notice is delivered and when a new rate takes effect.
The SEC says rates can vary substantially and advises customers to ask what the current rate is, whether it can vary, how changes are disclosed, how often interest accrues and how to reduce the loan. SEC investor education also says that, in general, a firm must provide at least 30 days’ written notice of changes in the method of computing interest. That guidance does not replace the governing account documents.
Tiered and blended rates
Interactive Brokers describes a blended structure in which portions of a loan are charged at different tiers. Under that approach, the first portion may use one rate, the next portion another, and so on. The entire loan is not necessarily charged at the rate shown for its highest tier. Thresholds and rates are volatile, so use the current schedule for your specific account and currency.
For example, if a schedule charges one rate on the first tier and a lower rate on the next, a $50,000 debit can have a weighted annual cost that differs from simply multiplying $50,000 by either tier’s rate. Request the firm’s tier definitions and determine whether rates are blended or whether one rate applies to the full balance after a threshold is crossed.
When margin interest starts accruing
Accrual and billing are separate events. Interest can accumulate daily even though no money is removed from the account that day.
Trade settlement matters
Schwab says an order that creates a loan begins accruing interest as of the trade’s settlement date, identified in its article as T+1. A trade entered on Monday may therefore create an interest-bearing debit when it settles on Tuesday, subject to the firm’s rules and market calendar.

Webull describes its closing debit balance as settlement-based and gives an example in which a position opened and closed on the same day does not incur margin interest under its method. That example is broker-specific. Do not assume that same-day activity is interest-free at every firm or for every type of transaction.
A timeline example
- You buy $20,000 of stock while $12,000 of your own funds are available.
- The remaining $8,000 is a potential loan, but the broker applies its settlement and debit-balance rules first.
- When the position settles, the resulting adjusted debit may begin accruing interest.
- If you deposit cash or sell securities, the debit can fall; the daily charge should fall with it once the transaction affects the interest-bearing balance.
- The accumulated daily amounts are posted on the firm’s monthly billing date, which may be weeks after accrual began.
When your broker posts or debits the charge
There is no industry-wide posting date. The examples below show why you must read your own statement and agreement.
| Broker example | Accrual description | Stated posting timing |
|---|---|---|
| Webull | Uses a daily/average debit calculation and settlement-based closing debit balance in its described method. | Monthly charges are typically posted between the 15th and 18th. |
| Charles Schwab | Daily adjusted debit balance multiplied by the daily rate; annual rate divided by 360. | Posts on the second-to-last business trading day of the month. |
| Interactive Brokers | Daily accrual with rates that can be blended across balance tiers. | Actual interest is posted on the third business day of the following month. |
These are descriptions published by the named firms and can change. A posting date is not the same as the date borrowing began: a statement debit in April may represent interest accrued on many March days.

You bought securities without intending to borrow

A withdrawal can create a loan after the request is processed. An unsettled sale may not provide usable cash when you expect it to. Internal transfers or option exercises can also alter the adjusted debit balance.

Cash did not net the way you expected
Some firms do not automatically combine every cash, sweep and margin sub-account for interest purposes. Ask whether the balances are netted and whether the sweep is eligible to offset borrowing.
The rate or tier changed
A variable rate can increase without a corresponding change in your position size. Check the effective date, rate schedule, tier threshold and any markup applied by the firm or introducing broker.
Unpaid interest became part of the debit
Ask how the broker treats an unpaid monthly charge. If posted interest is added to the loan balance, later daily interest may be calculated on a larger debit. The agreement should explain whether and when that compounding occurs.

How to verify your own charge
- Locate the margin agreement and current rate schedule. Identify the annual rate, benchmark or base rate, markup, tiers, day-count basis and change-notice terms.
- Find the daily or average debit balance. Use the statement’s adjusted or settled balance, not only the headline cash figure.
- Check settlement dates. Match each purchase, sale, withdrawal, transfer and option event to the date it affected the loan.
- Recalculate a sample day. Multiply that day’s interest-bearing debit by the annual rate and divide by the stated day-count basis.
- Add the daily amounts. Compare your total with the monthly interest line, allowing for rate changes, tier blending, rounding and any prior unpaid interest.
- Ask targeted questions if it does not match. Request the exact balance definition, rate applied each day, netting treatment, compounding rule and posting period.
A FINRA BrokerCheck disclosure concerning Axos Clearing records a historical case in which findings said the firm’s margin agreement did not provide the current base rate, explain its relationship to a public rate, or provide the introducing broker’s markup clearly enough. That case does not establish a problem at every firm, but it demonstrates why you should obtain the actual schedule and markup terms rather than rely on a headline rate.
How to compare margin offers
Compare the terms at the loan size you actually expect to use. The lowest advertised rate may not be the lowest cost after tiers, markups, settlement rules and compounding are included.
| Comparison point | Question to answer | Why it affects cost |
|---|---|---|
| Annual rate | What rate applies to my expected debit today? | A small percentage difference compounds over a large or long-running loan. |
| Rate variability | Is it fixed, benchmark-linked or discretionary? | Your cost can change without a new trade. |
| Tier structure | What are the thresholds, and are rates blended? | Different portions of one loan may use different rates. |
| Debit definition | Which settled or adjusted balances bear interest? | Settlement and account adjustments determine the principal used in the formula. |
| Day-count basis | Does the firm divide by 360, 365 or another basis? | The denominator changes the effective annual cost. |
| Cash netting | Do sweep, cash and margin balances offset each other? | Unnetted cash can coexist with an interest-bearing debit. |
| Compounding | Is unpaid interest added to principal? | Capitalized interest increases later daily charges. |
| Posting date | When will the monthly charge appear? | It helps reconcile statements and prevents a delayed debit from being mistaken for a new loan. |
| Eligibility and minimums | Are there account, balance or security requirements? | A quoted rate may not apply to every customer or position. |
No single broker is established as best for every balance or circumstance by these terms alone. Compare the current schedule for your account, currency and expected debit.
Ways to reduce or stop margin interest
- Deposit cash or transfer eligible assets, then confirm when the funds settle and reduce the debit.
- Sell or close positions if doing so fits your investment and tax plan; verify the settlement date before assuming the loan is gone.
- Cancel or reduce planned withdrawals from a margin account until the debit is cleared.
- Ask whether an eligible sweep or cash balance can be netted against the loan.
- Request the current rate and tier schedule before increasing the position.
- Monitor daily debit and accrued-interest fields instead of waiting for the monthly posting.
Reducing interest does not remove market risk. Selling collateral or depositing cash can have tax, liquidity and investment consequences, and a margin loan can still be subject to maintenance requirements while it exists.
Questions to ask your broker
- What exact balance bears interest each day: settled cash, adjusted debit, or another figure?
- On what date does a purchase, withdrawal or option event begin accruing interest?
- What annual rate and tier apply to my current debit, and is the rate blended?
- What day-count basis is used?
- Do cash, sweep and margin balances net automatically?
- When is interest posted, and what happens if the posted amount is not paid?
- How are rate changes disclosed, and when do they take effect?
- Where can I see the daily debit and accrued interest in the account interface?
Bottom line
Margin interest is usually a daily charge on a broker-defined debit balance, calculated from an annual rate and a stated day-count basis, then posted monthly. Settlement timing, tiered rates, cash netting, compounding and the firm’s posting date can materially change the result. Use your own margin agreement, current rate schedule and statements to reproduce the charge; do not assume that another broker’s formula, rate or billing date applies to your account.
