PC Gamer’s October 7, 2026 staff poll reports unread-email counts from 0 to 76,547. It’s a humorous snapshot of individual inboxes—not a representative survey, a measure of competence, or a ranking of the best way to manage email.
What did PC Gamer staff report?
The figures below are the counts shown for individual staff members in the article. They are not standardized across equivalent accounts: some people describe a work inbox, and some explain that the displayed number does not mean every message is unread in the literal sense.

| Staff member | Reported count | Context they gave |
|---|---|---|
| Christopher Livingston | 780 | He described this as a personal improvement after setting filters and unsubscribing. |
| Kara Phillips | 4,854 | She opens important messages and lets much other mail accumulate. |
| Evan Lahti | 38,523 | He pointed to long work history and old correspondence. |
| Sean Martin | 5,488 | He described corporate notifications and press lists. |
| Phil Savage | 18 | He uses unread status as an informal to-do list. |
| Joshua Wolens | 760 | He says he marks everything read when the displayed total reaches 1,000, so his actual unread messages may be much higher. |
| Andy Chalk | 49,925 | He attributed the volume to his job and criticized Gmail’s web client. |
| Jody MacGregor | 45,664 | He mentioned duplicate press releases and a period of ADHD-related difficulty. |
| Robert Jones | 17 | He said he normally aims for zero unread messages. |
| Ted Litchfield | 5 | This is his work inbox; his personal count was not disclosed. |
| Jacob Ridley | 39,608 | He said he reads useful messages and ignores the rest. |
| Tim Clark | 37,332 | No further context was reported alongside his count. |
| Lauren Morton | 0 | Her count fluctuates from zero to more than 50 during a day. |
| Fraser Brown | 76,547 | No further context was reported alongside his count. |
Livingston also estimated that he received roughly 50,000 emails over 2026 and reported 56 arriving during an eight-hour overnight-to-morning interval. He said he had 284 filters. These are his own estimates and figures, not an industry-wide email rate. Read the PC Gamer article.

Why do the counts vary so much?
The staff members describe different kinds of mail and different ways of using the unread label. Press releases, corporate notifications, old correspondence and messages someone intends to answer can all contribute to a displayed count. The poll does not establish that every participant counted the same account type or treated unread status the same way.

Some contributors keep unread messages as reminders; others open priority mail and leave the rest, skim subject lines, file press releases for later search, or periodically mark messages read in bulk. Livingston described filtering and unsubscribing. These are personal examples, not methods the article tested or ranked.
Is a large unread count a reason to feel ashamed?
No. The poll’s headline leans into inbox embarrassment for humor, but Livingston says the number should not be a source of stress or shame: “It’s not your fault email turned out this way.” A displayed total alone does not show whether someone is reliable, competent or doing well.

MacGregor’s mention of ADHD is one person’s account of a period of difficulty; it should not be treated as medical guidance or generalized to other people. The article offers anecdotes, not an explanation of why any individual has a particular inbox count.
