How Many Times Does the KJV Say “Fear Not”? The Count Explained

The exact KJV phrase “fear not” is reported in 62 or 63 occurrences or verses—not 365. The discrepancy depends on what text and counting method are used.

No: the exact phrase “fear not” is not counted 365 times in the King James Version (KJV) by the published counts examined here. Two 2026 sources report 63 verses, while one of them also reports a separate plain-text count of 62 occurrences. The difference reflects counting method and unit—not evidence for 365.

What the published KJV counts show

Count What it counts Source and scope
63 verses The exact phrase “fear not” Bible Says About reports a case-insensitive search of 1769 KJV verse text, excluding headings and psalm titles; its data were compiled in 2026.
63 verses The exact phrase “fear not” Mercy House Ministry reports this result from a Bible Gateway KJV keyword search for the exact words in quotation marks in its October 6, 2026 article.
62 occurrences The exact phrase “fear not” Mercy House Ministry says its separate line-by-line count of plain-text KJV returned 62.
103 matches in 101 verses “Fear not,” “fear ye not,” “fear thou not,” and “be not afraid” together Bible Says About reports this broader total for its 2026 count. It is not a count of the exact phrase alone.
62 matches The exact phrase “fear not” MakeInterview reports this in a 2026 AI-assisted article; it is a secondary count, not an authoritative Bible edition.

These figures should not be collapsed into a single definitive total. “Verses” means places containing at least one match; “occurrences” counts each appearance of the phrase. Those totals can differ if a verse contains the phrase more than once. The published reports also use different search procedures, so 62 and 63 can both be reported without either supporting 365.

What counts as the exact phrase?

A search for the contiguous English words “fear not” is narrower than a search for related wording. It does not automatically include “fear ye not,” “fear thou not,” “be not afraid,” “do not fear,” or passages that express courage or trust without using those words. For example, Bible Says About’s combined total of 103 matches includes four named forms, so it answers a different question from the exact-phrase count.

Nor does counting the word “fear” answer the same question. In biblical passages, “fear” may refer to dread, reverence, or fear of the Lord, depending on context. A count of that word—or of themes about courage—cannot establish how often the exact English phrase appears.

Why can search results differ?

A reproducible count needs to specify what text was searched and how. A website keyword index and a line-by-line search of a plain-text file are not necessarily equivalent. Formatting, included material, and the definition of a match can affect the result.

  • Text and edition: Identify the KJV text or edition. Bible Says About describes its source as 1769 KJV verse text.
  • Search scope: Say whether the query is only the contiguous words “fear not” or includes related expressions and inflections.
  • Matching rules: State whether matching ignores capitalization and how punctuation or line breaks are handled.
  • Counting unit: Distinguish individual occurrences from verses containing at least one match.
  • Included material: Clarify whether the search includes headings, psalm titles, cross-references, or front matter. Bible Says About says its count excludes headings and psalm titles.

The complete KJV text in PDF form can serve as a reference for wording, but no independent computational count of that PDF is established by the sources cited here. The reported totals remain secondary counts, not a fresh verification against that file.

Does the Bible say “fear not” 365 times?

The available published KJV counts do not support the claim for the exact phrase. The precise origin of the 365 slogan is also not established. Mercy House Ministry describes it as a popular saying and speculates that a broad collection of fear-related verses may have been rounded into a daily devotional idea, but that is not documented origin evidence.

Finally, a count of an English phrase in one translation does not tell you how often equivalent wording or ideas occur in Hebrew or Greek, or in another English translation. It is a count of a defined string in a defined text.

How to check a count yourself

  1. Choose a text. Record the edition or file, rather than relying on an unspecified search result.
  2. Set the phrase scope. Decide whether you want only “fear not” or a stated list of related forms.
  3. Set the matching rules. Specify case sensitivity and how punctuation and line breaks are treated.
  4. Choose the unit. Count each occurrence, or count each verse containing one or more occurrences.
  5. Define included content. State whether headings, titles, cross-references, and front matter are included.
  6. Report the result with those choices. Without them, a number is difficult to compare with someone else’s count.

A concordance can help locate references to a word or phrase, but its entries still need to be interpreted according to the translation and search scope being used. A Tyndale concordance excerpt illustrates the reference-finding role of a concordance; it does not establish a current product listing or a different exact-phrase total.
